Well, well, well. Apparently it has now been two weeks since the last small boat was recorded arriving in the UK. The 16th November was the last date and every day up to 30th Nov had 0 arrivals.

This coincides with the arrest of the man responsible for supply a large number of the boats on the 14th Nov.

Obviously there could be other factors, like the weather, but it’s interesting. Especially with posters repeatedly telling us that ‘smash the gangs’ is a pointless slogan and not something that can be done…

I wouldn't start celebrating just yet, 122 migrants in 2 boats arrived yesterday 1st Dec!

Where did I say it would stop forever? 2 weeks without any is rare. It’s a success. It says a lot about you that you are so eager for it not to be successful. Why do you want people risking their lives?

cakeorwine · 02/12/2024 17:57

I still struggle to see the obsession with the small boat crossings when people who come here officially are many many times more.

I guess it's easier to get good media pictures than look at the bigger numbers.

BIossomtoes · 02/12/2024 17:59

Which is why keeping it quiet makes sense. Any suggestion of it would merely allow the client media to claim it's all because of Rishi Sunak and "stop the boats".

It makes no sense. Sunak’s been gone for five months, why would his “policy”, based on Rwanda deterrence suddenly work now? The story is very simple and very positive - a significant arrest has been made and voila - no boats for a fortnight. Cause and effect and proof of the effectiveness of the new policy.

Well - we would need more data to draw that conclusion.

Because it's a very simple story to sell. No nuance. Plus scaaaaaaary.

We would because we actually think about these things. Most people don’t. It’s a very simple, easily understood story, perfect for the tabloids.

Yes exactly! Enough policy wonk! People have no time. You need zingy comms line. God knows Johnson didn’t get much right but on that he was first rate.

Oh fgs, if you have ever read any of my other posts on small boat crossings you will know that I have always said that no one needs to risk their life coming across the channel in that way. The only ones who benefit are the people smugglers.

2 weeks with no crossings is a start and yes it's great that one of the smugglers has been caught but for me a success will be when there have been no crossings for at least 6 months.

Nice try with trying to twist what I said though.

DuncinToffee · 02/12/2024 19:00

No crossings is not going to happen as long as there are no safe routes which the government are still ruling out.

And remember, the Conservatives spend £715 million on sending a grand total of FOUR volunteers to Rwanda.

On a different note, I have made airfryer 'kruidnootjes' and they are delicious Smile

Oh nice. Did you make your own speculaaskruiden or (please say yes!) is it available ready made?

I made my own

You can buy ready made ones in Dutch supermarkets, my sister used to post them to me until I realised how easy it is to make your own.

Mixed spice comes close but is sweeter.

So apparently semi-skimmed milk is now "left wing"...

Well now I am on a rabbit hole to see what kind of milk is most popular.

All I have found is that actual milk consumption is down.

And that most of the milk not used to produce liquid milk is made into cheese. Mostly cheddar

Along with oat milk and almond apparently. He's obviously after full fat milk which the "experts" are now saying is fine and not that bad for us.

Not a fan of Farage but think that was meant tongue in cheek.

I don’t. He doesn’t joke. It’s also obvious that there was another jug to the left (ironically) of the semi skimmed (as you look at it) which has been removed. Pretty sure it’s full fat and he’s moved it deliberately to manufacture a bit of outrage.
Full fat milk is, indeed, fine and in many ways better for us, so we agree on that at least. Not sure why the “ “ round experts though.

countrygirl99 · 03/12/2024 06:09

God knows what he thinks of me. I prefer skimmed. Hate full fat in tea, taste is too creamy first me.

pointythings · 03/12/2024 07:31

I agree, it's manufactured outrage. As for milk, I barely use it buy essentially oat milk for pancakes and full fat for hot chocolate. We take our hot drinks black. Horses. Courses.

Notonthestairs · 03/12/2024 08:04

fat difference between semi and whole is quite small. We have whole as I have to try and add calories to my child's diet wherever I can.

But semi skimmed is by far the most sold milk in England - so I guess that explains the election. 😁

There seems to be quite a lot of US discussion regarding unpasteurised milk.

ContactNightmare · 03/12/2024 08:50

As a left wing full fat household that gets the milk delivered I declare an interest!

Fat is okay and good for human beings. It is sugar that is very bad indeed, which should be rejected. It’s sugar that is making human beings fat, and er, not fat.

yours the People’s Front for Full Fat

Efacsen · 03/12/2024 08:59

A revolting scum forms on tea with full-fat milk due to our water - no way will we be going back to that whatever Mr Farage thinks
