What are you missing from the 90s, 2000 era

Just that really. Times have changed massively especially with social media and all the new technology in the world, what's everyone missing?

CowTown · 21/11/2024 15:20

Christmas cards. I feel like so few people still do them!

scalt · 21/11/2024 15:21

Teletext: the forerunner to the internet. There was "Backchat", where teenagers could send in comments, by phone, post, fax; and the excitement when you could do it by email (not many people had it at home then). I remember one comment from about 1997, which I think sums up the whole of modern social media:

"I really love Backchat, because the stupid things you all talk about amuse me. Keep up the good work, everybody, it's so funny!" Now you can just replace the word "Backchat" with "AIBU".

I remember someone in about 2008 wearing a T-shirt saying "Myspace is for losers". If anyone remembers Myspace now (a forerunner to Facebook).

Advertising in shop windows, and in Loot. I miss being able to do that. Now you have to use social media to get any success advertising anything, and you have to make it look pristine with lots of photos, video samples, and so on. I found this out to my cost when I wanted to advertise a local event. Before, I would have just put up a flyer in a few shop windows. Now... where do we begin?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 21/11/2024 15:23

Public services

DieStrassensindimmernass · 21/11/2024 15:24

My mum and I both being younger, living closer and doing random day trips! Student life. Cheap food.

scalt · 21/11/2024 15:26

And people weren't so chronically offended all the time. It's notable that some satirical shows like Little Britain have not aged well. People laughed at it when it was first on, but they don't now. You could laugh at it then because it was not supposed to be taken seriously.

(Disclaimer: I don't like all the Little Britain characters, and some of the sketches I do find in bad taste, but I do like some of them.)

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 21/11/2024 15:33

All of it really. Particularly disposable income! But I think really because it was an exciting time with new possibilities and perception of gaining equality for women. Now I am not sure that the internet brought us the amazing things we thought and women's rights are torpedoing backwards in a lot of countries.

But everyone looks back to the time they were young with fondness.

I was talking about this with someone the other day and we agreed! Comedy is a lot less funny now everyone is offended over everything 🤦🏻‍♀️

Jifmicroliquid · 21/11/2024 19:43

Toys in cereal. Why did this stop becoming a thing?

Ursulla · 21/11/2024 21:59

To stop wasting plastic apparently. Kids playing is wasteful.

Now they just make our clothes out of plastic instead, and fill the oceans with micro plastics in the process. Much better.

This brought me right back. You don't get them days now, tv and music can be terrible. Kids don't play with anything now but tablets and phones, on YouTube watching other kids playing it blows my mind. I feel lucky I was brought up in the '90s generation

But a lot of the so called comedy shows were absolutely vile. Matt Lucas and David Walliams clearly were misogynists and remember that awful Bo Selecta programme? In LB I really hated the sketches where the teenage boy was trying to sexually abuse his best friend's Grandma. That was just horrible.

I miss a lot of things from that era but not the gratuitously bad misogyny.

CrazyAndSagittarius · 24/11/2024 04:32

Everything. The 90s (and to some extent the 00s) were brilliant. I wish I'd appreciated them more at the time!

tobee · 24/11/2024 04:49

Yes I miss the going out to the shops and other things where you see people; share things together. I mean, I still go to the shops, but I don't have to. I can go to the cinema, but I can stay home and watch on tv. I don't like wfh, I like to get out and be with other people. I don't mind if they are annoying and irritating or rude or difficult or whatever. It's part of life's rich tapestry.

I love technology but it's also strangely isolating.

Beck30 · 24/11/2024 06:44

Economic growth. A feeling (pre 2000) that the world was generally getting better, more peaceful etc.

RedRiverShore5 · 24/11/2024 06:51

Being able to get tickets without being in a virtual queue on the internet

NineDaysQueen · 24/11/2024 06:58

Normal parenting

RedRiverShore5 · 24/11/2024 06:58

Even the box set serials were better in those days, before all the cheap made crap on Netflix, Prime etc

NineDaysQueen · 24/11/2024 07:22

Manners

BlastedPimples · 24/11/2024 07:37

Optimism.

Believing I had time.

Rumforme · 24/11/2024 08:09

Topshop jeans, talking with my friends about boys, cheap cinema tickets, vodka mudshakes, MTV music videos, endless possibilities ahead.

I know, it's weird and it keeps accelerating. Even a few years ago I'd go to John Lewis each year and try on a whole new wardrobe and spend hundreds of pounds to get my whole season sorted in one (way quicker when you add up all that time browsing, deciding, and returning the duds), and now there's so little stock there's no point.

Definitely this! A busy city or town centre with loads of places to shop- finding a real gem and then being able to get things to go with it. Testing all the perfumes, trying on hats and shoes! Saturdays seems really exciting- especially Saturday nights when everyone seemed to be out and pubs were packed.

Sunblocker · 24/11/2024 08:41

I also feel sad that my daughters have to trawl through Tinder and Hinge. Even if they do meet someone out who is brave enough to approach them, it’s all about getting their snap or insta and reviewing photos before any kind of date. Then it’s usually a dick pic 🤮
And no slowies at the end of the night- just imagine- never having the excitement of the erection section! Everything is planned- no spontaneity- I’d hate it.

We've done it to ourselves though...we went wild for the internet. 😣
