What are you missing from the 90s, 2000 era

Just that really. Times have changed massively especially with social media and all the new technology in the world, what's everyone missing?

Affordable housing and further/higher education - being able to improve your life and job prospects by moving or studying for meaningful qualifications without having to take on tens of thousands of pounds of debt. Also hope, optimism, clothes that last and aren't made of crap, taking cake into work on your birthday and everyone being happy about it and not moaning about sugar/ufps. Life is pretty miserable now.

Supersimkin7 · 21/11/2024 08:14

Social mobility and sticky lipgloss.

The rot had begun - only people from
solid families could buy flats in London ie Hackney in the early 90s. But we all had a chance at bettering ourselves, in much smaller ways.

Jemimapuddleduk · 21/11/2024 08:14

Shopping with friends, clubbing, my grandparents, the music, a much simpler way of life.

PastaAndChill · 21/11/2024 08:33

Screen-hopping at the cinema, and the sound system not being deafening.

Normal sensible cars, not huge chav wagons everywhere.

Quiet roads.

Living in the countryside.

Snow.

Watching TV with someone else, hanging around making tea etc while waiting for it to start.

Pointless and funny discussions about nothing important such as debating lyrics or trying to remember what show that actress was in. I hate how quickly the phone is picked up now to fact check, then usually conversation is stalled as the person googling gets distracted by a new SM msg.

ILoveLeopard245 · 21/11/2024 08:46

Blockbuster video store
woolworths
queing for tickets
nights out

CatsBeCrazy · 21/11/2024 08:56

My Nan .
She was my everything tbh , I stayed with her every weekend and every Friday after school, I have no doubt that if she had lived passed 1995 my life would have been so much better , not a life filled with childhood trauma and mental illnesses 😭

MorrisZapp · 21/11/2024 09:01

Films. Cinema. Anticipation of an exciting release and talking about it with others.

Partly it's because I'm old, I get that. But the film industry is utter shit now. Pulp Fiction had a huge influence, still felt today. Now it's all wealthy teenagers twatting about on country estates.

DustyGrapevine · 21/11/2024 09:02

Sunday morning walking down to buy the Observer and spending most of the day reading it section by section. In the park in summer, in bed in winter.

Also long boozy pub lunches with no care for work on Monday!

pooballs · 21/11/2024 09:12

Blockbuster, HMV, Woolworths pick n mix, magazines, night clubs

SquashPenguin · 21/11/2024 10:02

Social media not existing (what a time to be alive!)

Lovethatforyouhun · 21/11/2024 10:06

Late family and friends.
Energy and full health.
TopShop, clubbing and excitement!

smallsilvercloud · 21/11/2024 10:11

Although I love how tech has progressed, going back to the 90s, I love that friends would just call and we'd just have a chat, or maybe that's just because I'm much older now, everyone's too busy and WhatsApp is easier and less demanding.
A high street full of decent shops rather than the run down place to avoid.

windyhairday · 21/11/2024 10:35

Just the resilience of my young body. And the high street, I must admit when I need clothes now, I haven't got a clue where to start. Big shopping centres are fine if you want a smoothie and a giant brownie and a game of laser quest, terrible for clothes lol

TwistedSisters · 21/11/2024 10:51

Jane Norman, Tammy Girl and Kookai
Pick n mix with 1 penny sweets
Bliss and Sugar magazines
No social media

I was born in 1990 so this stuff was more early 2000s.

EmeraldDreams73 · 21/11/2024 10:53

Disposable income

Mittens67 · 21/11/2024 11:46

The twin towers. The world changed for the worse after this atrocity.

BobbyBiscuits · 21/11/2024 11:50

When I used to get loads of free food at work. A big bacon and egg sarnie, coffee shop coffee, fruit frappe, OJ, pret you name it. Then a big lunch from any nearby cafe or sit down restaurant, then snacks, more coffee shop, all delivered to my desk, then beer, lots of beer!! It kind of made up for being paid about a fiver a hour! And never ever being allowed a break!? Legal? Doubt it. Not now anyway.

notprincehamlet · 21/11/2024 13:01

Also the Guardian before Katharine Viner - I still miss the weekend Guide, and Grace Dent's World of Lather was glorious

CowTown · 21/11/2024 13:10

OddestSock · 21/11/2024 06:55

Buying a magazine and taking it to my room to curl up in bed to read it. I was talking to my parents about this yesterday- my teenagers will never understand the thrill of seeing the new Just 17 (or similar) in the shop and getting home to read it. There are no magazines for teens these days

Yessssss….new magazine day!

GameOfJones · 21/11/2024 13:10

I miss being able to buy and receive gifts of films and music (and books to a certain extent).

Everything is digital nowadays and I do love Spotify (and my Kindle) but there was something great about getting a new CD, or buying a video/DVD for someone. My dad would always buy me a cassette or a CD and a film for Christmas and nowadays we don't do that.

We are paralysed by choice nowadays. We used to go down to the video shop on a Friday night and pick a film to watch at the weekend and if it was shit, tough luck. But I don't think we were any worse off..... nowadays there are so many options I spend as long trying to find something to watch as I actually do watching the damn thing!

CowTown · 21/11/2024 13:11

Buying a CD and listening to it excitedly from beginning to end, whilst following along with the lyrics in the booklet.

CowTown · 21/11/2024 13:16

No binge watching…you had to wait a week for the next episode of Friends. And there was always a cliffhanger at the end of the season—you had to wait for the new series!!!
