Bebras - anyone else had results?

Intermediate Tier DC got 188 and I am not quite sure what that means but the school have been very pleased apparently.

Well done to your DC! Is he invited to the next round?

My DS took it at school but hasn't heard from them yet. He did the junior category.

StarGazer42 · 20/11/2024 12:42

Well done to your DC, that's a great result. The marks appeared briefly Sunday/Monday on their website (www.bebras.uk), but were then removed as I think there were some errors in the scores. According to the website provisional marks were released to the teachers/coordinators today and will be finalised by the end of the week, so most children should find out from their school early next week :) (Just checked and I can actually see my DS's marks again now, as I know his login details - he did the junior challenge).

I'm guessing this years stats will be released once results have been finalised, but for context for you, the max marks available in the Juniors, Inters, Seniors, Elite categories was 220 this year. Not many are expected to be able to do all the questions in the time limit, especially in the older categories, and there are negative marks for incorrect answers too, so 188 is very good. Last year was a bit different, as max marks were lower (200), but these are the stats for comparison:

Thanks @StarGazer42 I didn't realise they weren't officially out yet, maybe the results will change so I had better not get too excited!

marks are official now but website still only shows the score, not qualification for next round. DD (junior) scored 177, should be enough for next round but I assume they'll be told more next week.

madremia11 · 27/11/2024 21:22

DS still hasn't found out his score cos his next computing class isn't until next week. The wait (knowing the results are there) is killing us....

Does anyone have this year's stats?

StarGazer42 · 28/11/2024 10:53

It's still showing last year's stats on their website. I'm hoping they'll share this year's tomorrow, when they make the achievement levels and rankings available to teachers. DS got full marks in the Junior challenge :) I'm wondering if it was a bit easier this year though, as I've heard of quite a lot of people who got full, or very high, marks.

madremia11 · 28/11/2024 20:55

That's amazing @StarGazer42 congrats to your DS! Do the highest scorers still get invited to Oxford these days?

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 28/11/2024 21:10

@StarGazer42 How do you view their score? I can log back into DC’s account, click on “Juniors (10-12) - participated” and see a list of question titles. If I click on each question, I can see that all were marked correct except one, but I cannot see an overall score anywhere on the website!

StarGazer42 · 28/11/2024 21:11

@madremia11 So from what I can gather (this is DSs first year doing it), the top 10% used to be invited to do the OUCC (in their school) and then the top 20 in each age category from that got through to the final in Oxford. This year, the OUCC has been replaced by the Bebras coding challenge. I'm sure I read somewhere that the top 50% would qualify, but I can't find that again now. This is the only follow up this year, and the categories are skill based rather than age based, so teachers should enter their students at the most appropriate level dependent on coding experience.

StarGazer42 · 28/11/2024 21:13

@Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr On the page that says “Juniors (10-12) participated”, instead of clicking on that there's a link to "User score" on the left.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 28/11/2024 21:19

@StarGazer42 Thank you! Seems so obvious now 🤦‍♀️ DC got 214. Well done to your DC too!

Just seen the stats are out for 2024

For intermediates if they just allowed the full marks and top 10% they'd have appx 1k kids going because the entries for that tier have increased to around 241k. I can see why now the results are out!

DD got full marks in the seniors. She's not particularly interested in computers/coding etc, which I think Bebras tests for.

Are there any other careers that this sort of brain might be suited to? She's got no idea what she wants to do, but it looks like she probably ought to make use of this talent!

StarGazer42 · 29/11/2024 13:36

@Retrecir it tests your ability to think logically and methodically, so anything that uses those skills really. STEM subjects definitely, or maybe something along the lines of project management if STEM isn't an interest?

NordicwithTeen · 29/11/2024 14:59

Had an email from her teacher this morning to confirm she got 192 at intermediate - so they may well have updated after that initial scoring. It's great to have a "side quest" subject for the logical thinkers to get into IMO.

I was just scrolling down and realised I hadn't come back to the thread. We found out before Christmas that he got 220 in the junior category!

Are the DCs that are doing the second round doing anything to prepare?

Retrecir · 02/02/2025 10:57

DD isn't bothering with the next stage - it's happening at the same sort of time as the next round of the Intermediate Maths Challenge (which she's hoping to qualify for).

Her lovely CompSci teacher is gutted 😂

Pampampam · 19/02/2025 05:45

Jumping on this thread as DS brought a Bebras certificate home from school yesterday & we knew nothing about it. He’s in the Castors age group (8-10) and scored 164 out of a possible 180, which I’m guessing is a pretty good result? He seemed indifferent 🤷

Kingfishersperch · 27/03/2025 18:26

My son did the second one this week in his lunch break. Not sure which one he entered, he’s year 7 and codes for fun. He said that he really enjoyed it.

He’s not sure how the marking works but thinks they get the results after Easter.

StarGazer42 · 15/04/2025 00:15

If anyone's child did the coding challenge and knows their username/password, provisional results are now available on the website.

My20sportraitlady · 28/04/2025 22:51

My DS just got given his score , 209 in the elite. (Full marks except for one 9 pointer, and they take off 2 marks for a wrong answer). He didn't know about the challenge before, hadn't done any practices or anything, his form just got told about it on the day. Apparently his is a very good score and he has a bit of paper saying "gold certificate" but hasn't been invited anywhere or heard about any further rounds. His teacher just gave him the certificate in his computing lesson and said he came 14th in the country. Is it unreasonable of me to feel they could make a bigger deal of it? I mean if I were the head I would be at least writing a congratulatory email.

He's about to take his A levels so not really available for extra stuff right now, but does anyone know whether he might get any further invitation from Bebras to participate in anything?

StarGazer42 · 29/04/2025 11:03

@My20sportraitlady Is this for the UK Bebras challenge? If so, they've sat on those results for a long time, as they were available back in November last year. Prior to this year the top 10% for each category were invited to do the Oxford University Coding Challenge online, and then the top scorers from this got to go to Oxford for a final I believe, however it's all changed this year. There was an online coding challenge that ran before Easter, however this was open to all and run by the Raspberry Pi Foundation rather than Oxford Uni. Sadly, your experience of schools not really making a big deal about it is not unique (private schools tend to shout more about these sorts of challenges as far as I can see, good marketing for them if they have kids that do well I guess). www.bebras.uk is the website for the challenge if you want to know more about it. Well done to your DS and good luck for his A levels!

DD has got full marks twice now, at two different schools (both private), and no one was the slightest bit interested either time!

Yes, there was a follow-on round before Easter @My20sportraitlady so looks like school dropped the ball a bit there.
