I haven't as there's no provision for one in my modest home but it's certainly the right weather. Could we please see pictures? Thankyou.

This is ours in our old, draughty listed building. We burn mostly ash killed by die back at the moment which is free. To those saying that they should be banned, firstly the government would need to ease the rules on listed buildings as we aren’t allowed to add a heat pump or solar panels and this is the best way we have of keeping the house warm and dry without costing a ridiculous amount. We also have a six lane motorway not far away, I wonder what difference our log burner makes compared to the diesel lorry’s thundering along 24 hours a day? Solve those issues and I’ll stop using the log burner.

Enjoy your burner & free ash wood 🪵 🔥

Just about to light ours, the hound is sitting in front of it waiting and keep huffing and looking in my direction 😂

Bless! Get the thing lit & a treat for the hound to nibble on after waiting so patiently!!

Thank you! Why yes! It's all one sofa. TV is hidden in cabinet next to the fire. I've been splayed reading on the sofa all day. (Lazy). Sadly no cats at the moment, they've gone out for a bit. Expect they'll be back soon.

@lightningstrikes another lovely aspect. Might have to move in to test it out properly!!

cheeky cats !

We are just about to install a gas burner, looks like a log burner, acts like a log burner but alas it is a lookalike. We live in an urban area and I’ve so much research on pollution and I cant in all conscience install one, especially now as I have a tiny grandson and another on the way. Log burner pollutant is harmful to young babies. We are going for this:

We have one of these, had it installed last year. Absolutely love it! Would have loved a log burner but after taking everything in to consideration we went for the gas burner. Just had ours on and has made it lovely and toasty in the living room.

@AutumnLeaves24 the owner of the bum you spotted likes the fire a little too much. I have to remove her from the hearth when the fire starts to die down.

Ah pretty cat!! Some of them are a bit daft 😂

Our dog needed tempting away with a treat, had to be high value! Don't blame them though, just so cosy!!

Please don't get one of these... My elderly mother has a lung disease (not a smoker before anyone throws that at me) and is realllly suffering whenever she leaves the house in the winter. She lives in an average sized mostly-middle class town and it's fucking FULL of log burners. Every. Single. Time she leaves the house she is coughing her guts up and it leaves her coughing black phlegm up for days afterwards. She now hasn't left the house in 5 weeks....she won’t even walk to her garage to put laundry in her dryer.

So unbelievably bloody selfish

Small particulates from log burners in urban areas IS a really serious problem. Granny lost her life at just 40 in 1962 due to the dirty smoke from a ''temperature inversion' so I do empathise.

She was taken away in an ambulance from East Sheen,SW14, London and knew she'd never see her baby grow up.

She paused by the toddler's cot and said ''I'll never see her grow up''. {Died next day} 7th December 1962.

She too never smoked.

Bronchopneumonia /cor pulmonale {?}was on her death certificate.

The thick smog was choking, lots of people died.

I do empathise.

CoffeeneedCoffee · 19/11/2024 18:23

Depends where you live.

Our log burner is lit, lovely and toasty here.

Rural living, not on mains gas and only other heat source is electricity and very expensive.

Here's mine. My cottage was built in 1875.

Love my log burner. We only use kiln dried wood, hardly use the gas boiler, or the tumble dryer. How do the naysayers heat their houses when it’s cold?
My granny lived to the ripe old age of 101, was one of 14 siblings and the youngest age at death was 89. They had open coal fires from infancy til the 1980’s, and even then granny kept her open coal fire as she lived the smell of burning coal!
Some people will be affected by the particulates from all sources of power in the atmosphere, others not so much,

Edited

Look up something called "survivorship bias" for why your argument based on your grandmother is flawed.

Sorry to hear this.
I want log burners open fires banned in built up areas. They are supposed to be smokeless zones but really aren't.
A neighbour who back onto the side of us has one and the smoke comes in through our bathroom window which we like to keep open. Also makes our washing stink if we put it out on the line.
We are in London. We've got ULEZ reducing pollution but we've still got people lighting fires.

GARAGES are also at fault- they sell FILTY stinking bituminous coal.
Coal merchants aren't allowed to sell this nasty polluting coal in urban areas {smokeless zones} but garages can and do sell it.

However- anyone with smoke coming out of their chimneys in a smokeless zone can be fined.

Trixiefirecracker · 19/11/2024 18:30

We have two. They are not lit yet but I love them. They make the house super cosy. We live rurally and have oil heating which is ridiculously expensive so I rely on them. Only burn well seasoned logs.

Norugratsatall · 19/11/2024 18:30

@lamblossom snap! 😊

We've never lit the fire though in the 26 years we've lived here. Think I would just be too hot!

Some gorgeous cosy lounges here though, love this thread.

@TwilightAb are there any downsides, I’ve researched and can’t see any. We are moving house next week and can wait for installation.

I have 2 going. Remote Scotland. Not all houses have mains gas. Not all of us live in urban areas.

Some houses need them for heat.

Three woodburners here, and one in the letting cottage. Ancient draughty rambling house, also in rural Scotland. No gas, frequent power outages. Our own wood, well-seasoned. What's the alternative?

So what should people who live in homes that lack mains gas and are prone to electrical blackouts (and the two tend to go together because a lack of mains gas is often accompanied by overhead power distribution cables) do for warmth, given that oil-fired boilers also emit particulates?

Any home that is in a clean air zone is limited to DEFRA approved stoves to limit particulate emissions. Your mum might be healthier in a more urban area because they tend to be clean air zones.

KimFan · 19/11/2024 18:38

We’ve just moved to a much bigger home and having one is such a novelty! Haven’t got around to repainting the horrid yellow wall yet, but here’s ours, currently rumbling away! 🔥

Please report to DEFRA and Trading Standards any garage doing this as they are breaking the law.

I wouldn't say we've found any downsides. You obviously don't get the lovely crackle you get from a real burner. Plus of course you need to take the cost of gas in to consideration. We haven't seen a big rise in our gas bill though.
It's way easier to control though and is still lovely and cosy and warms the room up a treat!

CosyFire88 · 19/11/2024 18:39

I have....because we had heavy snow and the boiler decided to stop working 😑

I went in to a garage selling filthy coal to complain and they said ''People come in from the out-lying country to buy it...{Do they heck!}''.....I will most definitely look at that link, thank you.
