I haven't as there's no provision for one in my modest home but it's certainly the right weather. Could we please see pictures? Thankyou.

Please don't get one of these... My elderly mother has a lung disease (not a smoker before anyone throws that at me) and is realllly suffering whenever she leaves the house in the winter. She lives in an average sized mostly-middle class town and it's fucking FULL of log burners. Every. Single. Time she leaves the house she is coughing her guts up and it leaves her coughing black phlegm up for days afterwards. She now hasn't left the house in 5 weeks....she won’t even walk to her garage to put laundry in her dryer.

So unbelievably bloody selfish

Sorry to hear this.
I want log burners open fires banned in built up areas. They are supposed to be smokeless zones but really aren't.
A neighbour who back onto the side of us has one and the smoke comes in through our bathroom window which we like to keep open. Also makes our washing stink if we put it out on the line.
We are in London. We've got ULEZ reducing pollution but we've still got people lighting fires.

TooManyNiblings · 19/11/2024 17:35

@pinotgrigeeeeo yes, open fire. I burn what DH tells me too! Honestly, get the chimney swept by a decent sweep who gives a paper certificate (backed by the National Association of Sweeps) and they will advise you on what's best for your setup. We mostly use coal for heat with the odd log for flames, as recommended.

I agree with this. They're like something out of the dark ages. Family members are suffering so badly. Crazy selfish.

I’ve got mine lit because we went all eco years ago and got a ground source heat pump, and we have been trying to get the company who fitted it to come and repair it for the last 6 months. It’s fucking freezing in here as my central heating is not working properly and I can’t get it fixed. So, yes, the stoves are lit. We chop, dry and store the wood from on our own property. The alternative as we are rural would be to have an oil fired boiler which would have the fuel delivered by a diesel lorry.

In my corner of Scotland we have plenty of snow. No school for my children so far this week, the buses haven’t made it up our rural road.

Beautiful room you have there!!!

LER83 · 19/11/2024 17:40

We've got an open fire, but it's not on yet as we need to get the chimney swept!

Iamblossom · 19/11/2024 17:43

Just lit mine

BoobyDazzler · 19/11/2024 17:43

Me! It’ll probably be on most days now until march.

Nor that I should have to justify it but I live in a old, high ceillinged, house which cost a fucking fortune to heat, and we got 10 years worth of wood removing leylandii when we moved in so actually, I’m not bothered. Human beings have been using fire since the dawn of humanity.

Cismyfatarse · 19/11/2024 17:44

I have 2 going. Remote Scotland. Not all houses have mains gas. Not all of us live in urban areas.

Some houses need them for heat.

With dog. Two cats on the sofa out of shot.

@lightningstrikes

beautiful!!! Absolutely beautiful, all so pretty & cosy!

im imagining the cats!!

do you have a sofa/big comfy chair facing the fire? The teracotta one is facing the wrong way! (Bugger the tv)

hattie43 · 19/11/2024 17:47

Sadly mine is the Netflix screen log fire but it does crackle

SarahMused · 19/11/2024 17:49

This is ours in our old, draughty listed building. We burn mostly ash killed by die back at the moment which is free. To those saying that they should be banned, firstly the government would need to ease the rules on listed buildings as we aren’t allowed to add a heat pump or solar panels and this is the best way we have of keeping the house warm and dry without costing a ridiculous amount. We also have a six lane motorway not far away, I wonder what difference our log burner makes compared to the diesel lorry’s thundering along 24 hours a day? Solve those issues and I’ll stop using the log burner.

We have four. Live very rurally. 'selfish as fuck' but also toasty warm (heating oil is very expensive) and burning properly seasoned wood.

AngelinaFibres · 19/11/2024 17:35

We have 2 stoves. This one has been lit most of the day. We are in a village so no mains gas. We have an oil boiler and 2 stoves which keep our Victorian house warm. All our neighbours have the same.

We used to have a house with an oil burner, it was in a room in the centre of the house, perfect for getting all the clothes dried & sitting in with a coffee & the dog on very cold days, before eith the open fire/aga/radiators had taken the chill off the house!!

ElaborateCushion · 19/11/2024 17:55

Hercisback1 · 19/11/2024 16:49

Why are you so rude? A log burner is a perfectly normal household thing.

Sorry about your mum but there's no need for the rudeness.

Quite. My parent's old house had no gas supply so the most efficient form of heating was their multi-fuel burner (as storage heaters are useless!).

I do have sympathy for her Mum, but some people don't have a choice and, as you say, there's no need to be so rude!

Thank you! Why yes! It's all one sofa. TV is hidden in cabinet next to the fire. I've been splayed reading on the sofa all day. (Lazy). Sadly no cats at the moment, they've gone out for a bit. Expect they'll be back soon.

GlomOfNit · 19/11/2024 17:56

Only reason I haven't lit ours is that the chimney really needs a sweep and we didn't get it done last year... We live on the edge of a village. Lots of people here have them. It doesn't seem to be a massive issue here. I tell you what DOES stink - the coal fire that one person in the village has all winter. Imagine the days before central heating was standard - most houses would be belching coal smoke. I know particles from woodburners are also a pollutant but I don't think it's in the same league.

Having said that, if I lived in a built-up area I'd probably have thought long and hard before having one installed.

Amiracleatchristmas · 19/11/2024 17:57

Nothing like it though must resist a glass of red wine!!

Sorry to hear about your heat source pump!! What is heating your water??

I think you're doing the best available alternative.

its people using wood that's not properly dried that's are a problem & the biggest problem is people burning any old shite!!

Just lit. 2 out of the cats sitting in front of it.

JawsCushion · 19/11/2024 18:01

I've never had one but might be moving to a house that has one. What do I need to know? Some posters have got me worried now. My best mate has one and is about to get a second one installed so I'm assuming not the devils work.

Pinkchicken75 · 19/11/2024 18:01

@VegTrug
your quite rude !!
we have two log burners ,no central heating, no gas .We need to keep warm & mould free!
