Mortified - please help, loo not flushing! I’m

Staying at relatives. I’ve just gone to the loo for a number 2 and first flush didn’t get rid of it all, so went to flush again.
it’s one of those loo’s with a push button, however the second time it hasn’t flushed but I can hear the sound of running water continuously.

god I’m mortified I tried waiting a bit longer then pushing the button to flush again but it still doesn’t work

When I push the button it ‘works’ and a tiny bit of water comes up but it’s not properly flushing ffs

can still hear the ‘running’ of water sound

Just wait until the cistern refills . Only a couple of minutes

Mindymomo · 18/11/2024 17:19

Leave it a while to properly fill up, don’t attempt to flush again yet.

ThianWinter · 18/11/2024 17:19

Is there any way of filling a bowl with water from the basin and flushing it that way?

ShinyWorthKeeping · 18/11/2024 17:19

My toilet does this, we usually just lift the lid up on the cistern and put it back down and it fills up normally again. Good luck!

stargazer02 · 18/11/2024 17:19

The tank is refilling, give it a minute.

custardpyjamas · 18/11/2024 17:20

It may be a slow, quiet fill, you might have to wait a while.

Slobberchops1 · 18/11/2024 17:21

How did you get through life not knowing basic stuff like - you need to wait for the tank to refill?

ginasevern · 18/11/2024 17:22

We've got one of those push button ones at work. This is a regular occurrence. Give it five minutes before you try again.

MassiveOvaryaction · 18/11/2024 17:22

If it doesn't sound like it's filling, a firm whack with the palm of your hand on the side of the cistern might help. Works for ours anyway.

TianasBayou · 18/11/2024 17:22

Is there a bin?
Empty the bin, fill it with water.
When the tank has refilled, quickly pour the water down as you flush.

Postslikethese · 18/11/2024 17:22

Lift the lid off the cistern and pull the little plastic hangman-shaped thing up. That will rest the toilet and then when it's filled you can flush it.

Dirtyprotest · 18/11/2024 17:25

Flying pasty time.

NewGreenDuck · 18/11/2024 17:28

You can't lift the cistern lid where it's a push button without unscrewing the button. You need to wait and then press both sides of the button at the same time.

Thanks all
Waited a good 5 mins and still have that running water sound but was at least able to do a weak flush but the bowl is clean/presentable now 😅 flush isn’t fully back to normal but just grateful I haven’t left a mess in their loo

You'd better tell them as it sounds broken. If they're on a meter it could get costly.

ObtuseMoose · 18/11/2024 17:36

Does the push button feel loose? Ours does this and it just needs tightening for it to work properly.

NewGreenDuck · 18/11/2024 17:50

Is it constantly letting water out of the cistern into the pan? If it has then the syphon needs to be replaced.

Wendolino · 18/11/2024 17:54

If it sounds like water running for ages, the little rubber valve underneath the push button needs replacing. The toilet will still flush but it takes a long while for the cistern to fill up.

I dont think OP cares about the plumbing now that the turd has gone.

5128gap · 18/11/2024 17:56

The constant sound of running water means the flush button has stuck down (it's constantly flushing without having time to refill) pp is correct, you need to open the lid and manually lift the plastic button up. You'll see the 'weak flush' one is down.

JohnTheRevelator · 18/11/2024 17:58

If you can hear water running continuously, chances are it's still flushing, therefore the cystern isn't refilling. Mine does this occasionally. Pump the flush button up and down several times until you feel 'resistance' iykwim. Leave it 15 minutes then flush again. Hopefully it will work this time.

November2024 · 18/11/2024 18:00

You need to tell them as they need to look inside the cistern to see if they can fix it. Leaky loos cost a fortune.

samarrange · 18/11/2024 18:11

Next time this happens, break the poo up with the handle of the loo brush and the bits will flush. Then wash the handle thoroughly, of course.
