Lip picking

Hello for 15 years plus I’ve had a really bad habit of constantly picking my lips (sometimes until they bleed) it gets particularly bad during the winter as my lips are dry so gives me more reason to do it. Sometimes I don’t even realise I’m doing it until I make them bleed and the pain ‘wakes me up’ out of it as such. Has anybody else experienced this and what has helped?!

thanks

Yes I do this and it gets so sore! For me it's always when i feel anxious or bored. What helps sometimes is keeping my hands busy with something else (fidget toy, bit of blu tac) and getting a really nice lip balm. So when I notice I'm doing it I put on lip balm instead to remind myself to be kind to my body. Can also wear a really sticky lip gloss so it becomes harder to actually access the scars/dry skin to pull them off.

I had this problem as a child but I would bite the skin off so keeping my hands busy didn't help. As Sixpence suggested I wore very sticky chap stick or lip gloss. Not only couldn't I get at the dry skin but it helped stop the skin from drying out. It took about 6 weeks to break the habit.
