DH has the hacking man cough

Exploding every 5 minutes with one minute long, very loud bouts of HMC.

Have offered hot and cold drinks and paracetamol etc. at regular intervals, he hasn’t taken anything and apart from shuffling to the toilet and for meals has been in bed watching videos.

Dreading a second (and perhaps not the last) night of HMC.

He doesn’t have a dressing gown but is in full doom mode.

Force a high strength lemsip into his hand and lead him to the spare room.

AnnaDelvorkina · 17/11/2024 18:30

Sadly we don’t have a spare room. He has hot water, hot water, sliced lemons, and a variety of painkillers, but refuses them all.

He has also done his back in 2 weeks ago and still hobbling and groaning with that (he did go to the osteopath, admittedly, and took a few painkillers for a day or two.)

Hand him a hot lemon drink and tell him to drink it or it’s the sofa tonight - the whole family shouldn’t have to hear him coughing all night!

AnnaDelvorkina · 17/11/2024 18:40

I don’t think he would fit on the sofa, I would but have just had surgery so not too keen. I am making another hot lemon now. Thank you.

I have also suggested he book the doctor for tomorrow.

If he has the virus I had, it's utterly grim. A month on and I'm waking up in the night coughing, just less frequently.

MessyNeate · 17/11/2024 18:46

Agree with PP I'm on day six of this hideous virus and I just seem to be feeling worse not better.

I have been in my pjs for six days 😭

AnnaDelvorkina · 17/11/2024 18:53

Sorry to hear this, hope you are on the mend soon.

I actually had the cold first (since last Sunday, a week ago) and thought DH hadn’t caught it, perhaps because he was recently vaccinated against flu and COVID. I was pretty unwell with it (but complicated as I’ve just had a major operation) but didn’t have much of a cough, but then again DH smoked whereas I don’t so he does often have bouts of violent coughing. I am ok now except a headache and a bit of vomiting and nausea (not all the time.)

@AnnaDelvorkina hope your recovery is going well!

my DH always seems to get it worse than me, he's not home atm but is giving my sympathy from afar via video call 😂

This virus is brutal, I have never felt so ill in my life, I have bruised ribs I have been coughing so violently, been to the doctors and was given steroids and inhaler. 4 days ago, it's made no difference, I actually contemplated going to hospital yesterday, I was delirious from lack of sleep. 💀

TheBigSalami · 17/11/2024 19:21

Why is it a ‘man cough’? Have you never had a bad cough?

I recently had whooping cough and I coughed day and night for months. My husband didn’t feel the need to gender it.

True. My DF (not a smoker) has a loud hacking cough too so I’ve grown up associating it with men, but that’s unfair.

DH has had this for the last week, cold for a week before. He's being a good patient and taking regular steam cups and expectorant cough mixture. He has asthma so had similar in Jan.

I've had little sleep even with ear plugs. I've done everything for 2 weeks, but I suspect this'll last at least another week.

Yeah in all fairness I've just gotten over something horrendous. The cough was unbearable. I hurt ribs coughing. Ended up on antibiotics

I think I had similar. I got a bacterial infection to top it off. Do you have a spacer with your inhaler I found that helped me get it into my lungs really deeply (before I spluttered)

It took me 8 weeks

Hacking man cough gets significantly worse during company my ex used to do it along with ATISHOOOOOOOOO!!!@@ sneezes whenever we had company especially his mother and she would side eye me constantly asking if I was "taking care of him" when he had his vasectomy (scheduled it when I was almost eight months pregnant) she gave him a lift home and instructed me that he needed to be helped to do everything can't even go to the toilet! You will need to lift him! I said take him home with you then because I'm not doing that 😒 her husband put his foot down 😂 he said don't baby him ffs he isnt coming home with us

Anyway he might just have a bad cough but he needs to take the meds
