Old-fashioned foods which should make a comeback

I am just making a cheese and potato pie for lunch, which I last ate circa 1988. It's basically mashed potatoes mixed with an egg and a fuck load of cheese, more cheese on top and then baked in the oven. Bloody lovely, relatively cheap and filling.

Which other old-fashioned foods do you make /have you made recently which you think should make a comeback?

We used to have rissoles often as a child. Haven’t had them now for about 35 years.

I still make suet dumplings regularly. I don't know anyone else who makes them- although they always enjoy mine!

It's a shame that floral flavours have fallen out of fashion. I love rose, violet and lavender but you very rarely see them, except in turkish delight and parma violets.

I make Earl Grey tea with frothy milk and vanilla syrup, then top it off with lavender... it's called London Fog and it's absolutely lush.

Treacle tart. The base is pastry, and for some you put cornflakes on the top.

Ooh that's posh!

Mum just put twists of pastry on ours!

Eta.

Sorry, misread, thought you had put "for some reason", meaning that everyone did!

Lemon puff biscuits.

I got excited when I saw them in poundtretcher recently and bought some, so disappointed to find they are an updated version that as per modern times taste rubbish and very little like the original.

Get yourself over the bridge to Wales, they’re a staple there. And faggots. DH stocks up on them whenever we go back.

Cheese pudding, like my DM used to make. Alas I never got the recipe from her, never quite sure of quantities of breadcrumbs, cheese, milk and eggs. Utterly delicious comfort food though - must do a Google search for one that hasn’t been poncified with e.g. aubergines and garlic, so that it no longer appears so shamefacedly British - in some people’s opinions, that is.

You can get them in Home Bargains except they're round now

Absolutely! I was just browsing a menu of a place close to me that I'm going to next week and they're on the menu! https://thewelsh-house.co.uk

Isn't blancmange just jelly made with milk instead of water? I don't remember it ever coming from a packet.

No, you can make blancmange with normal custard powder and milk and you just put it in a mould to cool and set. I make it regularly - its not gone anywhere!

What you’re describing is a milk jelly. Very nice but more faff to make.

EdithStourton · 17/11/2024 13:41

@godmum56 @viques @Deathraystare thanks for all rose and violet creams suggestions.

DH and I are having a thrilling outing to Lidl tomorrow so I'll be on the lookout.

We called the jelly and carnation milk thing jelly whip. Much lighter than blancmange, which is like thick. I wanted to make some for my kids, but can you even buy jelly that has sugar in it and not artificial sweetener? I can never find any of the former.

Proper rice pudding - food of the gods and dead easy to make.
Suet dumplings - I've not made any for a while.

And the way to my heart at Christmas is a box of plain chocolate rose and violet creams. Hotel Chocolat sometimes has them, as does our nearest classy grocers, but nowhere else.

Guilbert's has rose and violet creams, as well as geranium and lavender. They're wonderful.

Oh I used to like those. I didn’t realise they’re not about anymore. Now I fancy one.

World food aisle still has them

Rissoles!
A staple for using leftovers when I was a child, iirc.

Block ice cream made into wafers

Blocks of Neapolitan ice cream shopped up and sandwiched between two slightly stale wafers - my parents' way of keeping us from nagging for a 99 from the (relatively) expensive ice cream van.

Come to Wales, even the local corner shop stocks faggots. It's almost a religion!

Brains faggots (frozen) are still sold at my local ASDA.

Talapia · 17/11/2024 13:44

I love making black forest gateau and old fashioned desserts such as sweet macaroni and other milk puddings.

Can't think of many main courses I miss, liver and bacon yuk, hearts, kidneys etc. I don't my miss offal. I do make my own pies sometimes.. Haven't had pork chops for ages. Love a good thick lamb stew.

I tend to make only what people think of as old fashioned food!
Corned beef hash, Lancashire hotpot, stews, ham egg and chips etc etc

I can cook but it's mostly comfort food type stuff I prefer

Yep! You and me both… when I was doing ‘domestic science’ at school (a bloody lifetime ago) the general brief for what we cooked and learnt about was
“feeding a hungry family”

DP has a manual job, as did my Ddad and Dbrother, so I’ve always cooked hearty meals. No complaints as yet!

I made some rissoles a few years ago. I immediately remembered why I hadn't made them before. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

Ox cheek - I know it's fashionable but I can't remove from memory the fact that it was boiled up for the working dogs on the farm.

Bakewell tart, NOT covered in nasty unnecessary white icing.

DM used to make the most amazing little chocolate cakes. She'd start by weighing the egg and work the rest out from there. If anyone has that recipe... Pretty please?

They sell one in Asda but its about £4 I think, so haven't bought it in a while...

I miss Marble Cake,* *Asda used to sell one but not seen it for a few years now.

Blancmange IME is made with cornflour and milk and some kind of fruit to flavour and gelatine to set it.
