Old-fashioned foods which should make a comeback

I am just making a cheese and potato pie for lunch, which I last ate circa 1988. It's basically mashed potatoes mixed with an egg and a fuck load of cheese, more cheese on top and then baked in the oven. Bloody lovely, relatively cheap and filling.

Which other old-fashioned foods do you make /have you made recently which you think should make a comeback?

Artic roll. I’ve been looking in shop freezers for months and I’ve sadly concluded no one makes it anymore.

I was only thinking this yesterday because I've been buying ham shoulder joints and making what my mother used to call boiled bacon. The cuts they sell here are a bit different I think because I'm not in the UK and they only sell it for a few weeks of the year but it's quite cheap for such a lot of meat.

I make cheese sauce with fresh parsley in it instead of plain parsley sauce go to with it. It's not as bland as you might think if you cook it gently with a bouquet garni type of thing and quite comforting.

I won't be making pea and ham soup though.

OP here- I think I worded my OP a bit wrong. I was actually thinking about dishes you might make at home which are old fashioned but delicious, not so much things in tins and packets. Does anyone have anything they make regularly at home which would never usually appear on a modern menu?

@KnopkaPixie that's the kind of thing I mean!

Yes please to vol-au-vents, surely they are due a revival? I don't care if it's ironic, they were bloody delicious.

BasiliskStare · 17/11/2024 12:55

Is there actually a taramasalata shortage - our local supermarket usually stocks it but not for the last few weeks

Oh and Angel Delight

Blancmange has gelatin in it too, not just cornflour. Otherwise it wouldn’t set.

It doesn’t the packets only have cornflour

Lemon puff biscuits.

Oh I used to like those. I didn’t realise they’re not about anymore. Now I fancy one.

herecomesautumn · 17/11/2024 12:56

@cherrytree12345 Do they?

We don't have Sainsbury's near but I might check online.

Thank you 🙏

cherrytree12345 · 17/11/2024 12:57

In the 60's a shop near my parents sold a desert in a tin. It was strawberry syrup with lumps of strawberry and you mixed it with milk. Can't remember what it was called but it was lovely
Anyone remember it ?

TheCoolOliveBalonz · 17/11/2024 12:57

Another one plain stuffing. So just breadcrumbs, seasoning, butter, egg, onion, herbs. So much nicer than the over flavoured stuffings which are now the norm. Then just real gravy. People do not have a proper respect for gravy anymore.

Scrimt · 17/11/2024 12:57

Blancmange is one of those things I've only ever read about in children's books from the 1920s. I'm sure William Brown was blancmange obsessed.

I make corned beef hot pot sometimes, my Nanna's recipe—corned beef, onion, carrots, potatoes, stock made with an Oxo cube, and loads of black pepper. Served with buttered brown bread and pickled beetroot.

OliviaRodrighost · 17/11/2024 12:58

Bird’s Hot Crunch. Especially the banana one. I hate bananas but I loved this 😂😋

MyOtherProfile · 17/11/2024 12:58

Thanks to this thread I have just slipped a packet of jelly cubes and a tin of carnation into my online grocery order to make blancmange this week. Wonder what the kids will make of it!

Each time I visit my parents (abroad) I have to go on a hunt for suet, as my Lancs dad makes various things with it. I always worry one year I won't be able to find any for him!

Atora brand suet is available in many, if not most large supermarkets, in both the original and vegetarian types.

I’ve never had any problem finding it in England . A quick Google shows Ocado, Tesco, B&M stores and Waitrose carry it so you should be abke to stock up for your Dad.
What might be more of a problem are rules on imports of foodstuffs in some countries…

I can never seem to find lemon curd tarts anymore. They used to the yellow one in a pack of jam tarts but that's now been replaced with apricot.

Morrisons … 6 lemon curd tarts in a pack 😊

BunnyLake · 17/11/2024 13:00

Home made steam puddings and custard. The type you had to wrap in cloth, put in a pudding basin and steam on the stove. My mum used to make them all, jam roly poly, spotted dick, treacle sponge etc. I don’t think I’ve made one in my life. I know you can buy but you can’t beat home made ones.

BasiliskStare · 17/11/2024 13:00

Just googled - apparently due to a strike there is shortage of taramasalata - hoped to be rectified soon

We used to have faggots, peas and mash a lot as kids. I haven't seen them many places since the 90s.

I honestly hated those more than anything . They used to make me vomit I think the smell and the texture. At one point DM declared I must be allergic to them as they made me so violently sick but it was the smell/taste/texture and I thought they were made of brains 😂

Dripping butties toasted with loads of salt.
