Old-fashioned foods which should make a comeback

I am just making a cheese and potato pie for lunch, which I last ate circa 1988. It's basically mashed potatoes mixed with an egg and a fuck load of cheese, more cheese on top and then baked in the oven. Bloody lovely, relatively cheap and filling.

Which other old-fashioned foods do you make /have you made recently which you think should make a comeback?

This is a long shot, but does anyone out there remember or have you ever heard of a dessert that was known to my grandmother as 'Shango'?

Apparently she used to make it many years ago it was remembered by my mum, who always wished she could find it in a recipe book, but never did.

I think she said it had raspberry jam which was sandwiched between a crust and crumbled top?

It could have been a regional name, or just one of those names lost in the history of dessert baking.

Lifeomars · 17/11/2024 22:10

I am loving this thread, it is bringing back so many memories of my childhood and my lovely mum

Respectisnotoptional · 17/11/2024 22:14

Cremola I think it was called, a bit like custard but with added texture, I used to love it.

StaunchMomma · 17/11/2024 22:17

We still love a cheese and potato pie in out house, OP! With a fried egg and beans ❤

JennieTheZebra · 17/11/2024 22:17

@BarbaraVineFan Wet Nellie is a slightly moister Nelson cake. It’s from Liverpool/the Isle of Man.

In the crisps line, does anyone remember those tiny puffed crisps shaped like pigs that were ( appropriately enough) bacon flavoured I think?
I’m also now remembering Macintosh’s Highland Toffee bars…I think both these and the pig crisps were available from the school ‘tuck shop’ in less health conscious days!

Awesome oinks?

Cremola was a powdered drink

Yes, I love blancmange!! It's very easy to make too.

And semolina should make a comeback - impossible to find in shops (although according to DH it brings back bad memories of school so he's probably happy it's nowhere to be seen...)

You can get semolina in Tesco. I think Birds do a kind of instant one, but I’ve also got another make there, which was nice (sorry, can’t remember the brand).

JennieTheZebra · 17/11/2024 22:25

@Thevelvelletes Cremola is also custard thickened with ground rice. https://www.easytoswallow.co.uk/cremola.html

I like Queen of Puddings. I discovered an old cookery book with lots of yummy puddings. Queen of Puddings was one of my favourites.

Syllabub is also due a comeback. My mum had a lovely recipe. Yes, I know it’s rich, but this was lush. Lots of cream and some kind of alcohol.

Dukeshill do Rose & Violet creams. They have a royal warrant I think. I’m ordering a few things in November with free delivery. Have to spend £40 though. I really rate their food.

Okay so @CustardCreams2 you've sent me down a DukesHill ham based rabbit hole for the past few hours. I’m going to make an order this week! 🤤

What gets me is that we are remembering all these stodgy puddings, high carb food and other unhealthy stuff we all ate, yet we were all skinny.

Because it was real food, mostly made by hand.

Now it's all packed with fillers and gums and sweeteners and emulsifiers - all linked to obesity, over-consumption and food addiction - all designed to save food companies a ton of cash by packing products out with cheap shite.

We've been royally screwed over.

godmum56 · 17/11/2024 14:25

you hollow out a BIG core. plug the bottom with butter. add brown sugar and sultanas, not currants which are the devil's work, more brown sugar then another huge plug of butter. Serve with custard or icecream

😂
I was force-fed them on a frighteningly regular basis for around twenty years, and I'm sure that sultanas would have been preferable to the currants my late DM often used, and I'm also sure that brown sugar & butter would have been better than ordinary granulated.

I don't care. I am never going to eat another one and that's that.

tolerable · 17/11/2024 22:31

omg! -my ma would have us "make" rich tea biscuits, jam ,lid, icing n jelly tot +sprinkles. for pudding(we just bout always had 3 courses)- alternatives to soup = melon,or fruit coktail(not tinned) ....fairy toast (regular toast BUT remove crust(chop n put in croutons tub) then divide/toast other side(crispbread) ..with pate...etc... sliced banana n cold custurd pudding( which her prepared earlier in the day...ooooobviously

Thanks 👍

StormingNorman · 17/11/2024 22:33

I haven’t been able to find tinned plums for a few years. They were the best.

Tapioca and semolina are due a revival too.

And bananas and custard. Yum!

Well, we didn't have central heating so we needed something that stuck to our ribs.
And we didn't drink tins of Red Bull all day long.

Bread pudding?

Looks lovely but its bread pudding

Have you cooked this, is the milk in the recipe added to the soaking milk or is it the soaking milk?

upinaballoon · 17/11/2024 22:40

In Morrisons' freezer I saw Spam Fritters a few weeks ago. Maybe I should just get some and see what they're like.

There is that. We had ice on the inside of the windows in winter. My friend, who is only mid 40s said that as a child she lived in a council house with an outside loo!

It's odd isn't it. Looking at old footage of crowds etc from the 60s, 70s, 80s is like looking at a different species of human. Is it the shite in ultra processed food I wonder? Less of a snacking culture/eating late in the evening?

Fewer cars. People walked more. Children played outside a lot.
