Could I get away with 17mm difference on kitchen doors?

Am basically looking to get my cupboard doors replaced.

In the photo the black numbers are the actual measurements of my current doors.

They do standard door sizes and custom.

To match my doors exactly is a custom price and costs £250 more.

The red is the standard size.

The width is the same as my doors.

But the height would be 17mm less,
So hung in the middle the doors would be 8.5mm shorter top and bottom.

Would that be OK?

Was expecting it to be the lower price. Not the custom and not sure I can raise another 250.

I would think it would look a bit weird as you would see the carcass of the cupboards.
Also would the hinge holes be where you expect on standard doors or are you drilling them yourself?

You tell them where you want the hinge holes to be so if have to work that out

Or I could hang them flush with the bottom of the carcas and put a thin decorative trim at the top?

I'm paint colour matching the cupboards anyways

Sorry I think that will look pretty bad and you will regret it.

Breadcat24 · 14/11/2024 14:55

What sort of doors are they? I can see several people online selling 732 h ones but obviously have not looked at the price.
If they are shaker wood and you are painting them you might be able to add a strip of wood before painting?

Kitchenwoe · 14/11/2024 15:20

They are these

They won't look right.

Can you not just keep the doors you have and send them off to be spray painted and have new handles fitted?

I think with the beading added when they're closed you wouldn't be able to tell.

No they're old and peeling

An extra £250 for all 10 doors? I'd pay for the custom.

What happens if you buy the standard and it looks awful and you regret it? A lot more than £250 to fix no doubt.

Peclet · 14/11/2024 17:11

Pay the extra?

Ir will look off and shabby.

I'm disabled and on benefits. The original sum is already a huge amount for me to have saved.

It can't look shabbier than now, which is peeling doors with broken hinges and water damage.

UpUpUpU · 14/11/2024 17:28

Then you should continue to save until you can do them properly. You’ll only regret it if they look bad, which I imagine they will with such a big difference in size

Kitchenwoe · 14/11/2024 17:30

I don't think they will if I box the top in with beading, you wouldn't be able to see any of the carcass at all, so how could it look weird

It won't look right no matter what you do

Finger nail size gap

Kitchenwoe · 14/11/2024 17:31

Like that?

Sorry, I don't think that I could accept doors that didn't fit by that much. Almost a cm difference on top and bottom would be very noticeable.

There would be no gap with decorative beading at the top

It sounds naff, colour and texture matching will be very difficult

If you want cheap - use sticky back plastic on the existing doors and rehang them

StillCalendula · 14/11/2024 17:36

I see what you are thinking and I think it could work fine.
Would you have to re-hang the cabinets?
Have you priced up the beading, glue/nails, paint and painting equipment?

Is there any need to be so nasty?

I have beading left over from another project, enough. I will have color matched paint anyways as I'm taking the cupboard sample to get matched for skirting and I have adhesive etc already.
My husband will hang them. He's very handy

Is it £250 in total? If so I would 100% pay that

Or, as you say they are old and peeling - is it laminate that you can peel off and then get them painted?

midgetastic · 14/11/2024 17:47

You asked for opinions but you don't actually want them?

I gave you an alternative that would probably ( imho) look better than your suggestion and that means I am being "nasty"

Kitchenwoe · 14/11/2024 17:51

Opinions don't need to be venomous.

Anyway I will update when it's done as I think I can make it work.

I have so many quick "renter hacks' in my house that MNers would hate but I always gwt compliments on

No it's 250 more. It's 600.

So will be 850
