Republicans have both houses now so will get everything passed

Littlemissgobby · 13/11/2024 19:42

Blimey that now means donald trump controls the white house and both houses.
Which means they can push through everything they wanted and no push back from the Democrats.
A mandate to change america to a place that maybe is not recognisable anymore

What with elon musk and vivek in charge now off getting rid of regulations that includes things that make people safe. It sounds like elon is just gonna start slashing and burning regulations and even the fbi. Especially as elon has been fined his company for not following regulations .
They are arguing republican taking point that it's about saving money but it's actually alot more about getting rid of people in departments which could have a big effect in the future and the regulations that they could get rid off could really affect people's health
I know trump fans will be OK but seriously if u r American or not does this amount of power now with trump scare you?
Plus ultimately now ut defo means Ukraine are fucked

Try this for size. America leaves Ukraine to its own devises. Europe tries, but fails, to protect it. Ukraine falls to Putin.

America really does pull out of NATO. Putin invaded Poland..

What might happen next?

Well maybe the other European countries then finally start spending more of their GDP on defence that they should have been doing for years rather than expecting the US to pay for their security.

localnotail · 13/11/2024 22:19

I actually think if there was a wider war with Russia Trump will support Putin against Europe.

1dayatatime · 13/11/2024 22:24

@localnotail

"And, believe me, even if Ukraine is occupied the war will not end, it will be another Israel/ Gaza situation. Plus, Poland, former USSR Baltic states, Moldova and potentially Finland will be invaded, too. But of course let's not rock the boat."

Please stop being a drama lama - there is zero indication that other countries will also be invaded. Just because you can remember appeasement from GCSE History it doesn't necessarily mean that Russia would go on to invade other Eastern European countries.

You could advance an equally valid argument that after the mauling the Russian military received in Ukraine it would not wish to take on a stronger adversary such as Poland.

"Well, as a British person, I do give a damn about Ukraine because Russia isn’t gonna just stop at that they will go further."

So if the US pulls military support from Ukraine (to date they have given $66 billion in military support) as they are entitled to then are you OK with the UK making up the shortfall, for example rather than spending £21 billion extra on the NHS we could spend it on military aid for Ukraine?

Or would you accept British military boots on the ground in Ukraine?

If the answer to either of the above two points is no then it seems somewhat unreasonable to expect the US to pay for a conflict in Europe's backyard that the European nations themselves are unwilling to contribute towards at the same level.

We are all paying for but we know USA have bigger sources then we do. We have contributed loads to I tell you what though I’m very disheartened after just listening to the radio of an American conservative from conservative home who didn’t understand that there was no free and fair election in the Crimea Putin did not allow them to have this free unfair election so they want to be in Russia. Ukraine does not want to be with Russia but I am actually astounded by how many people don’t seem to understand that Putin does not do fair and great elections he likes to poison his opposition
if you want my opinion, we should’ve gone hard to begin with. We should’ve got round with NATO and smashed it up and take on Russia but nobody wanted to do that.

Millions of Americans voted for what they wanted. I'm British but have also lived in USA. I'm a Trump supporter. His policies. What he stands for. All we can do is wait and see if he can do what he's promised now 🇺🇸
Of course, I completely understand others feel differently and would have preferred the Dems, and I respect differing opinions, but we are where we are now, so we just have to sit back and hope he's for the greater good and only time will tell.

I’m thinking you don’t realise this isn’t about other peoples opinions. This isn’t about u voted for Republican that’s okay normally any other Republican president I would say fine . However with this guy He’s very like an unleashed cannon basically he’s got now Elon Musk it’s gonna rip up the regulations in America destroy loads of stuff because it suits his Business. Plus you’ve now got him too close to Russia. We are talking about security of America here. As somebody that lives in Britain I cannot understand how you are not scared for her goddamn security because of Russia gets over into Ukraine the likelihood is they’re gonna push to Europe.

"I know trump fans will be OK"

Not sure about that. A lot of Trump's base are people who are financially pretty vulnerable and many are reliant on government funded healthcare, and send their children to public schools.

Putin will have no reason to stop at Ukraine if he takes it, where else would be ‘a shame’ for him to invade but we’ll let him because ‘oh well’? Is Poland fair game? Hungary? Why not go for Finland if nobody’s really that bothered?

Is that true though? Putin thought the invasion of Ukraine would take three days - it's over two and a half years and the war is still grinding away. I don't think Ukraine can win, but Russia has hardly won. Where would Putin's manpower and equipment come from, if he decided to start attacking EU countries?

I'm deeply, deeply concerned about the welfare of Europe, having to deal with a murderous expansionist dictator on its borders. Autocrats around the world have been waiting for an isolationist POTUS - Trump is very, very bad news for most of us.

Wow, patronising much?

  1. I'm Ukrainian, born and grown up in the USSR
  2. I speak Russian and had the misfortune of being aware what Putin has been saying for the last 15-20 years. He is obsessed with recreating the former Russian Empire/ USSR, he doesn't make a secret of what this entails.
  3. Whatever "mauling" Russia receives would not stop Putin. He will wait a year or two, and start again.
1dayatatime · 13/11/2024 22:48

@Littlemissgobby

"if you want my opinion, we should’ve gone hard to begin with. We should’ve got round with NATO and smashed it up and take on Russia but nobody wanted to do that."

That might be because Russia is a nuclear power and a reluctance to sacrifice the lives of British soldiers in a conflict with Russia.

Besides even if the UK did do this then it wouldn't be long before we had anti war protesters claiming that the only reason the UK is involved is to get their hands on Ukrainian oil etc etc. So basically "nah best to stay away from this cluster fuck".

Recommend the Gavin Esler podcast I've linked to above. The guy he has on to talk about what's ahead for Europe is Keir Giles - Author of 'Russia's War on Everybody: And What It Means For You.

Honestly - we've walked half asleep into a an incredibly precarious situation with Putin in Europe, and it's not just Trump that's the issue, it's our governments that have for decades under resourced our military, so that now the US withdraws its resources, we're left incredibly vulnerable.

Edited

Well if those European countries are concerned about security the simple answer is to spend more on defence rather than expecting the US to pay for their security.

The US spends 3.45% of GDP on defence, Finland that has a land border with Russia and who you claim is Putin's next target spends only 1.7%.

I don’t think we’ll see four years of Trump. He’ll be more interested in looking at the mirror at himself or playing really badly on the golf course. The ones to keep an eye on are those around him that are actually trying to do stuff, a lot of it’ll be horrendous. Most of it will be ludicrous; deranged.
USA will rattle itself to bits in a matter of months and it’s not going to be pretty.
