What European country would you move to in a heartbeat?

If you had the chance to. Feel free to be more specific as some countries have wide regional disparities. I would move to Belgium.

Italy

username358 · 13/11/2024 00:48

Pragmatically one of the Nordic countries because they have such a high standard of life. However I love France.

I speak French, German, Spanish and a bit of Italian, so there are quite a few countries I could easily live in. I wouldn't particularly want to though. If I did, I'd probably choose Germany. I find the Germans easier to get on with!

I'm so jealous of people whi can speak lots of languages. I'd live to learn but I think at my age my brain wouldn't take it in

Bewareofthisonetoo · 13/11/2024 07:11

Croatia

Squirrelsnut · 13/11/2024 07:13

I wouldn't. Not because I think England is perfect but because I'd miss the countryside where I live too much (Cotswolds).
I do love the Balearics though.

buybuysellsell · 13/11/2024 07:31

Italy, I think. I speak French so that would be the obvious choice but I love the culture and attitude of the Italians. I expect it has its problems like everywhere else but I think you could live very well there.

WhereAreWeNow · 13/11/2024 07:38

France, Sweden, Denmark

WickedGoodDoge · 13/11/2024 07:42

Spain - specifically Soller, Mallorca. We have a plan to move there for (at least) 12 months once DH retires

Sonolanona · 13/11/2024 09:16

Malta. I have a deep love for the little island.

ByMerryKoala · 13/11/2024 09:19

To move forever? I wouldn't - I'd stay here. But if I could move somewhere for a few years I think I'd move to Portugal.

Wow- It must be wonderful to speak so many languages

I would move to the South of France ( I speak French)
Dh is Spanish, but I am not sure if I fancy living in Spain

Austria

The Netherlands

Wouldn't at the moment - it's grey dark and thoroughly depressing for the next 6 months haha. Saying that - we are a nation of cyclists, come rain or shine!

sharpclawedkitten · 13/11/2024 09:41

Copenhagen would be a great place to live. Or Hamburg.

I think all European countries have their problems, but suspect healthcare at least is easier to access overseas.

PurebredRacingUnicorn · 13/11/2024 09:49

France-though I am worried about the direction of their politics.

TheNinthLock · 13/11/2024 09:52

Back home - the Netherlands.
If somewhere new - Denmark, Norway or possibly Finland 😊

Finland. One of the bigger cities though or on a trainline. I would happily live in Helsinki if someone bought me a house there.

I moved to Finland many years ago. These days it's not so great to move to for non-EU people - if you lose your job you have only 3 months to find a new job before you lose your residence permit. It's like the current government really doesn't want work-based immigration. Bunch of idiots.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 13/11/2024 10:24

I'm not sure if it's much more fun for Finnish people with the high VAT and electricity costs and everyone in a bad mood about either the government or migration levels. It's still the place I would live if I didn't live here.
I think even for EU citizens who aren't from a Nordic country there can be a lot of antipathy and a high expectation to learn Finnish to a decent level. I got shouted at in a pub recently just for speaking to my friend in German because "this is Finland". Wild times.

Hello from NL! Flowers

Filamumof9 · 13/11/2024 11:37

Dutch as well, though currently not living there. If I would move back to Europe it would be Belgium or northern part of France.

User19876536484 · 13/11/2024 11:39

I can’t think of one. Everywhere has its pros and cons.

PurpleChrayn · 13/11/2024 11:45

Probably Portugal.

It's one of the only European countries I would feel safe being Jewish these days.

Costacoffeeplease · 13/11/2024 11:51

I’ve lived in Portugal for the last 20 years

It can be great in lots of ways, but can also be frustrating beyond belief

TheWomanWithTheStick · 13/11/2024 11:53

Norway. In fact, I wish I had done just that many years ago when I could have got a job in their oil and gas industry. Life could have been so different!

Lisanoonan · 13/11/2024 12:20

Anywhere except the UK!

This is not saying that the UK is bad per se.

Just that I've lived here for too long,

and I don't think it is good for anyone's mental health to stay on one small island for their entire life.

There is a big world out there.
