Is this a healthy packed lunch for DS9?

mincepietwentytwo · 12/11/2024 20:36

DS9 just switched from school dinners to packed lunch but I get stuck for ideas.

Won't eat:
Cucumber
Peppers
Tomatoes
Fruit (apart from raisins)
Tuna
Chicken (won't eat sliced chicken in the sandwich)
Marmite
Hummus
Nothing with a skin/pips

Will eat:
Ham sandwiches (50/50 bread or a bagel)
Crackers/rice cakes
Frube
Smoothie
Fridge Raiders
Crisps (only give every now and then)
Cheese cubes (won't eat the cheese in the sandwich)

He eats cooked vegetables at dinner and has a smoothie after school so not doing too bad?

cooked and cooked carrots and broccoli?

persisted · 12/11/2024 20:42

Does he eat eggs? Then you could try cooking a frittata with some veg in and stick a slice of that in there.

ProvincialLady24 · 12/11/2024 20:44

Until recently I thought Fridge Raiders were for dogs!
I'm probably a massive food snob, but I wouldn't let my children eat them.

I give my DC a combination of:
Ham or cheese salad wraps
Salami and olive pot
Cheese and cornichon pot
Whole grain crackers
Red pepper slices or a carrot "pencil".
Dried Mango or Apricots (V high Sugar)
Lentil Crisps or Popcorn
A pear, plum, tangerine, apple or nectarine (season dependent)
Homemade flapjack or ginger cake on a Friday.

Well I'm the generation that everyone's packed lunches were a sandwich, a penguin and a bag of crisps.
Your list sounds fine.

Thewildthingsarewithme · 12/11/2024 20:46

I think ham is only recommended once a week as it’s carcinogenic, could you switch it to turkey maybe that you cook yourself and slice? I’d also lose the frube and the fridge raiders

NuffSaidSam · 12/11/2024 20:47

I'd lose the fridge raiders and put some chunks of chicken in instead.

Will he carrot sticks? Or cold sweetcorn?

Needmorelego · 12/11/2024 20:48

@Thewildthingsarewithme what's wrong with Frubes ? It's yoghurt.

Literally. Every fucking day for 12 years 😂 Unless of course it was a school trip to the zoo 30 minutes up the road, where I'd be packed off with supplies as if I was hiking through the Andes for a week.

Thewildthingsarewithme · 12/11/2024 20:50

It’s an UPF with some pretty questionable ingredients in and a really high sugar content @Needmorelego one frube is half a child’s sugar limit for the day!

Was given a stick if celery as well.

Needmorelego · 12/11/2024 20:54

@IAmNeverThePerson but did you eat the celery?😂

Comedycook · 12/11/2024 20:56

How about

Mini pizzas
Chicken drumsticks
Cold chicken goujons
Sausage rolls
Cocktail sausages
Tuna sweetcorn pasta

I do this, I can't help myself!

At home: sandwich, bit of veg, bit of fruit.

At camp, 9-3pm: double sandwiches, veg and fruit. Plus about 45 snacks.

Why?!?!

4offPlease · 12/11/2024 20:59

My child's 'will eat' list is fucking abysmal so yours looks great to me

My daughter has every single day

Jam sandwich on white bread
Bag of ready salted crisps
Cucumber
Mini Maryland cookies
Squash

Zippidydoodah · 12/11/2024 21:05

I’m so bored of making packed lunches. I only do them for my daughter in key stage 2 but that’s enough!

If your son eats vegetables at home, that’s good. I keep hearing that vegetables are much healthier than fruit and I have fruit guzzlers who will only eat carrots for veg. 🙄

Have you tried baby corn? You can also put cold sweetcorn out of a tin in a lunchbox. That used to go down well with my youngest two. Not anymore but that’s by the by 🙄😂

Where did you hear this?

Laalaalaand · 12/11/2024 21:08

A frube is a small portion of yoghurt. One frube has got 4g sugar - how is that half a child's recommended sugar? Children are recommended no more than 24g. An apple has 19g.

Only on Mumsnet would a frube be considered the Devil's snack. It's quite scary how many people who have no idea about food, are very happy to pontificate on it.

Zippidydoodah · 12/11/2024 21:08

Everything is carcinogenic. Didn’t you know that?

Thewildthingsarewithme · 12/11/2024 21:10

@Runninggirls26 the world health organisation

CocoDC · 12/11/2024 21:10

Can you send a hot packed lunch? DS went through a phase where he hated school dinners so I’d send him off with various types of pastas in a thermos and some cheese & crackers for afters. No pudding because I’m evil.

TheRealSlimShandy · 12/11/2024 21:11

What about a pasta salad maybe (and hide some veg in it).

like @Needmorelego - I only ever had a ham and cucumber sandwich, penguin and crisps )in a my little pony lunchbox) and have survived to tell the tale 😊

Needmorelego · 12/11/2024 21:13

@TheRealSlimShandy my sandwiches were jam ones 😱 Oh the horror.

Thewildthingsarewithme · 12/11/2024 21:14

@Laalaalaand sorry you’re right it’s 4g per frube but that’s still a fifth of your child’s daily sugar intake, it also contains various gums which aren’t actually food. There’s no need to be insulting no dietician would think frubes were a good choice for a child they’re just rubbish 🤷🏻‍♀️

Stressfordays · 12/11/2024 21:15

Mine gets a ham roll, a bag of crisps, a frube and takes an apple for a trip out 🤣 honestly, l just want the kid to have a full belly. He's not even that fussy but he isn't gonna be faffing about with his packed lunch, he's wanted to wolf it down so he can get outside to play 🤷

It's just yogurt.
