Do you spend money every day?

I do and I’m really trying hard to have some no spend days but there’s always something! Even just needing bread and milk and this suddenly turns into spend &10/£15 in Tesco picking up other bits. Other days can be train fare to work and then realising I need a drink/snack to go with lunch I’ve brought. It’s not massive amount every day but after looking at bank statement there’s something on there every day! Anyone else?

Nothing on weekdays if I can avoid it. Home made soup for lunch is better than buying a sandwich anyway.

Saturday I'll buy a week's food, and have my hair cut, Sunday I'll refuel the car.

Then back to spending nothing again. Ho hum ! I'm clearing the bills before Christmas

NewName24 · 12/11/2024 22:50

No, nowhere near.

I remember this question being asked on a thread a few months ago and I was amazed how many people do.

At the time of the last thread I wfh quite a lot, so credited it to that, but I have since retired and am out and about a lot more, but I still don't spend money every day.

justjuggling · 13/11/2024 00:45

I now aim for at least 3 no spend days per week. Have been surprised at the impact it has made on my monthly finances because any spending is more mindful and less ‘frittering’.

So looking at this last week-

Wednesday- nothing
Thursday- coop £15
Friday- Sainsbury's £30
Saturday- cafe £12
Sunday - inflatable place £20
- dog food £52
Monday- download a kids app £5.50
Tuesday- lunch with friends £12

RickiRaccoon · 13/11/2024 03:52

There'll be 2-3 weekdays days I don't spend. I'm trying to stop because it adds up. With toddlers I find it harder to remember to get things for me during the weekly shop so it is often (but not always) topping up what's been missed there.

garlictwist · 13/11/2024 04:49

Probably. I go to supermarket a few days a week. Prob get a book or a household item from Amazon once a week. Go swimming most weekdays which costs money. It's very rare I don't spend anything.

Yuja · 13/11/2024 05:27

No but I work from home and live in a village so nothing to spend it on!

CeeJay81 · 13/11/2024 05:33

Yes but I work 5 days a week in a supermarket🙈. Sometimes if I'm not working on the Sunday I won't spend but between that, having a coffee with a friend and online shopping etc, it's probably like 2 days a month I don't spend! If I've got a week off work and not going anywhere then there might be 2 to 3 days I don't spend.

hattie43 · 13/11/2024 06:19

I always think I have a no spend day but then realise it's because I haven't physically been to the shops . Then I realise I'm delusional because of online shopping . Those sneaky Amazon books or QVC temptations. Eg yesterday I spent zero from my wallet but bought Chelsea peers pyjamas .

AgileGreenSeal · 12/11/2024 20:36

No, I don’t spend every day. But I find if you don’t carry it you don’t spend it.

You can pay by phone these days and very few people leave their phone at home

OldTinHat · 13/11/2024 06:23

Yes. Usually on Deliveroo for grocery bits I don't need.

WhitegreeNcandle · 13/11/2024 06:28

Nope. I’m trying very hard to think about being simple and mindful in my life. I probably don’t spend on 4 out of 7 days (not inc bills on DD etc) and would like to get that higher.

rollonholidayz · 13/11/2024 06:41

WhatTheFudges · 12/11/2024 20:26

I can go months without spending. At the start of the month I put everything into “spaces” for all my bills, petrol, meds and lunch. Anything after that it’s very rare I spend, I’m a saver and love getting interest at the end of the month.

Have you got an NHS prepayment certificate for medication? Saves me a lot

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 13/11/2024 06:42

Yes, but it's not a moral failing. I'm just keeping family life ticking over.

MixedCouple2 · 13/11/2024 06:44

Nope. Sounds like your just need more organization.
Do a weekley shopping list and stick with it. Buy a reusable bottle for drinks on the go and buy snacks in bulk from the shops during weekley shop. That woukd ommit all that daily spending.

Perfectlystill · 13/11/2024 06:46

Yes and it is something I think about. It annoys me.

happinessisnotapossession · 13/11/2024 06:47

Self employed so spend a ton on my business so I think the postman thinks I'm always spending!

It's coming up to Christmas so making purchases most days now, but usually it's just food and petrol once a week. Maybe a monthly clothes shop.

But are you counting direct debits? I have about 15 on many different days.

Caspianberg · 13/11/2024 06:53

Pretty much. If I haven’t gone out and haven’t bought anything online, there’s still generally a direct debit that goes out for something.
Often there’s more direct debit at the beginning of the month, but often not all same day. Nursery, electric, heating, car, mortgage, bins, council tax, that’s like a week of daily spend alone. Charging car ( at home but still a spend is around once a week). Food maybe 2-3 times.
So easily most days without buying anything extra.

Jifmicroliquid · 13/11/2024 06:55

Yep. Monday and Tuesday, for instance, just picking bits up at the shops both days and putting petrol in and I’d spent around £150.
Thats fairly normal for me.

WillowTit · 13/11/2024 06:56

always
milk/bread
parking
dh buys donuts

Womblewife · 13/11/2024 06:57

Yes, shopping and bits for the kids for lunches or school events etc - it’s every day in small amounts but it all adds up

WillowTit · 13/11/2024 07:00

i tried to work out my non spend days but it was depressing.

Beezknees · 13/11/2024 07:25

Yes I do, but I food shop pretty much daily.

Dumbo18 · 13/11/2024 12:51

Looks like i'm not on my own with this one! Someone up thread asked about having the time to spend, i wfh 3 days a week but live very close to shops and when i'm in the office its in the centre of town and i always try and get out for a walk. Thought today would be a no spend day as i actually have most things in but just got a message from DS school reminding us of dress up day on Friday and all his costumes are way too small... maybe tomorrow

Even if it's only $20 or whatever getting top up groceries
