Anyone else still not put the heating on?

RosiePosieWa · 11/11/2024 21:27

Children are teens who run hot and walk around in vests still and moan if I even mention the heating
I get chilly but layer up.

I said I'd wait till November but still not put it on.

It's 1 degree here in Wales this morning. So yes it def went on. Haven't had it on much so far, as its been quite mild but there has been quite the change now. I'd rather not freeze, if I don't have too.

DancingLions · 12/11/2024 09:04

I never have a set time of year when I "allow" myself to use it. If I'm cold, I'm cold and the heating goes on.

Unless money is very tight, I find the idea of huddling under a heated throw or similar quite depressing. Fine while you're sitting down but you still need to move at some point. A cold house is miserable. I'll confess I bought an oodie when gas prices were really high but I found it so bulky and restrictive.

Beezknees · 12/11/2024 09:06

I don't turn mine "on" it's set to come on if the indoor temperature drops below 16 degrees.

It hasn't come on yet but I expect it might by the end of the week as it's getting colder.

Sadcafe · 12/11/2024 09:07

Certainty not on a daily basis, maybe for an hour on a couple of occasions when the house has felt particularly cold

loopyloo52 · 12/11/2024 09:13

I'm currently working from home in my upstairs office and have all the windows wide open to air the house and dry the windows. It's cold but not unbearable. Just checked the thermostat it's 16 degrees downstairs currently.

BiddyPop · 12/11/2024 09:20

I have only turned 1 radiator on (at half power) in the past week - at the far end (behind the couch) of the kitchen/diner/living room. I need to set the thermostat properly, to let the flat cool down in daytime but be warm when I get home and in the mornings when I get up.

Rads in bedrooms, office and bathrooms are still off.

Beautifulkitty · 12/11/2024 09:24

I have not had my heating on at all for the past 2 years. I did feel a bit cold last night but it said the temp was 18. Maybe I'm getting old. Hoping to avoid using it though.

ODFOx · 12/11/2024 09:30

On Saturday afternoon we both felt cold so turned the heating on. On Sunday morning we both agreed it was too stuffy so turned it off again. It's just so mild this year. I like to be toasty warm but apart from Saturday night the heating hasn't been on since mid February when we had that really mild spell. It's bizarre!

Same.

It tends to get a bit competitive on mumsnet though as to who can stand the cold the longest.

It's different if you can't afford it, but I absolutely will not make a martyr of myself to the cold.

Besides, it gets rather damp in my part of the country and I don't want a damp and mouldy house.

I'm amazed at how few posters have thermostats. We don't "put the heating on". It comes on when it is cold enough to dip below the thermostat setting.

Vates · 12/11/2024 10:42

No heating on so far but I live alone and have no pets. So it is only for me! If family were visiting I would heat it to 19/20 while they were here then switch it off (as I want them to feel comfy and not freezing). Currently 16.5 and still using my lovely fan. I feel too warm the majority of the time and genuinely uncomfortable in places that are heated unless it is actually cold.

It says it is only 7 here today but went outside in a t shirt and felt fine. It doesn't feel that temperature. I am aware that I am odd. My Sister and Auntie both really feel the cold.

Vates · 12/11/2024 10:44

Oh, and I have a heated airer for drying clothes which is brilliant!

LaLaLaurie · 12/11/2024 10:46

Mine has been on. I don’t want a cold house which develops damp because of refusing to switch the heating on.

I'm not refusing.
Just not felt the need yet so what's the point?

Always been like this and never had any issues with damp in the house.

We’ve been having ours on sporadically for a few weeks. Generally don’t feel cold until thermostat drops below 16.5, this normally prompts putting it on for an hour or so.

@AppleDumplingWithCustard it’s an interesting question, we’re a sporadic ‘here and there’ household. We have excellent radiators, and good insulation. I’d say unless it’s a very cold snap (below 5 degrees day and night) an hour of heating provides enough benefit for a good 2-3 hours in the day if we’re moving around and doing stuff. I don’t like having the heating clicking on and off to maintain a certain temperature as it feels wasteful, but we’re in a luxurious position of not having any health conditions to consider and a house that doesn’t seem to be getting damp/mouldy.

JackJarvisEsq · 12/11/2024 11:57

It’s dipped nearly 10 degrees here in 24 hours so mine is definitely on today!

DieStrassensindimmernass · 12/11/2024 12:00

We live in almost as far north in the UK as you can go, yes it's milder but we still need heating on. We also just got our system upgraded so are enjoying a warmer house.

RosiePosieWa · 12/11/2024 12:16

I may have jinxed myself with this thread as just put it on. It's so cols today

Our upstairs was 11 degrees last night 😩 and I'm sure downstairs is colder as we're renovating and it's v draughty from rubbish windows. I put it on every evening for a few hours.

henlake7 · 12/11/2024 13:19

Will be putting it on this week I think. No thermostat as I just have electric heaters, no central heating.
So will probably try and just set the timers for an hour morning and an hour evening (according to where I spend more time in the day).

This is mumsnet. Where people are oddly competitive about how they don't feel the cold and only put the heating on when it snows.

Yes, and they all hate summer as well 😀

Comefromaway · 12/11/2024 15:08

I've learnt my lesson and I have even put the radiators on low in the kids rooms (both are away at uni) as last year we got damp in dd's room.

OneForTheRoadThen · 12/11/2024 15:22

Not yet. I only put it on when the kids are cold

Attelina · 12/11/2024 15:26

No heating on here! It's been very mild.

Nah, it's more "This is mumsnet, where most posters can't seem to comprehend that other people are different and don't necessarily feel the cold/heat in the same way they do, and where they take a difference of opinion as some kind of weird personal attack".
