Anyone else still not put the heating on?

Children are teens who run hot and walk around in vests still and moan if I even mention the heating
I get chilly but layer up.

I said I'd wait till November but still not put it on.

Not had the heating on at all. I still use and air conditioner and fans at night due to my hot flushes.

HermoinePotter · 11/11/2024 22:48

Our heating came on at the end of August as we had a bit of a cold snap and it kicked in. It’s been on since September regularly and the log burners have been on since the beginning of October. I never understand the race to be last to put heating on in winter, it must be very miserable especially if you can afford it.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 11/11/2024 22:48

Got home from a couple of nights away last night and the house was at 11° so yes, the heating went on this morning.

Readinstead · 11/11/2024 22:54

I am in the Midlands and the heating hasn't been on yet. I have worn my oodie twice and put a blanket over my legs a few times whilst watching tv, but tonight am just wearing a sweatshirt and jeans and not feeling cold at all. Most years the heating is on by the end of October so we are doing well this year.

WhatTheFudges · 12/11/2024 03:48

We don’t strive to keep the heating off.

Is the heating off because you’re not cold, can’t afford it or because your playing some family game to see how long you can go without it?

We put heating as one of our top 3 priorities so always have the money to cover it, we don’t go on holidays, I’ll sacrifice that over being cold for 3-4 months of the year anyway.

This, I love our little fire!
It really is no wonder so many properties end up with mould and damp issues if they are rarely heated through properly (half an hour a day won't cut it). I think people forget heating is part of property maintenance not just there to keep us warm.

EmpressaurusKitty · 12/11/2024 06:26

I’ll happily put the heating on as soon as necessary, but the temperature in my flat is 19 at the moment so no need!

Viviennemary · 12/11/2024 06:29

Is there a prize for who has the coldest house yet only has the heating on for 10 minutes a fortnight,

9outof10cats · 12/11/2024 07:04

I have TRVs so customise the temperature of each room. When at home, I heat the whole house to 18 degrees but go higher in the room I am using and yes, I have had the heating on.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 12/11/2024 07:08

It’s been on most days for an hour or so at least for the last month and a bit. it’s getting chillier and it’s been on longer the last week. Greater Manchester. While not cold cold it’s been very dark and damp for ages.

We’ve loads of credit and are on an ok fix. Not heating the 30s semi we live in just creates damp, high humidity and takes an age to heat it when we do turn it on.

We only heat to 18/19 anyway

EarlyBird12345 · 12/11/2024 07:10

It’s two degrees outside here in my part of Scotland, the thermostat says it’s nine degrees in the house, and I’m under two duvets. Too right the heat’s been pit on this morning!

TheFairyCaravan · 12/11/2024 07:11

We haven’t gone out of our way not to put the heating on, it just hasn’t been necessary yet. Our thermostat is set to 19 downstairs and 18 upstairs but it hasn’t kicked in yet. We live in a very well insulated, new build in South Yorkshire. I have had my heated throw on a couple of times, but that was when I was poorly so I’m not sure that counts,

Stretchedresources · 12/11/2024 07:12

It's all very well if you don't feel the cold. But most houses need heat to stop damp and mould.

StainlessSeal · 12/11/2024 07:15

This is like the Mumsnet chicken....I'm in London and mine's been on sporadically since September. I run cold, and it's miserable. Lucky to be able to afford to do so, but as I can, I'm not sitting down in the evening in 16 degrees!

Ridingthegravytrain · 12/11/2024 07:16

Our house is really cold (my bedroom is currently 11 degrees!) badly insulated and tends towards damp. So yes we have it on. But probably could do with more...

StainlessSeal · 12/11/2024 07:16

That should say sporadically since September but properly since October:

mitogoshigg · 12/11/2024 07:43

Depends on your house, mine is pretty warm so it's just an hour in the morning and 2 in the evening but it doesn't always come on as thermostat is over

coffeesaveslives · 12/11/2024 07:43

It's two degrees here this morning, ours is most definitely on!

TinkerTiger · 12/11/2024 07:51

I don’t until last week of November/first week December. BUT I do live alone, my place is small, and I have a very low tolerance of heat. I make do with a heated blanket for now until it’s time.

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/11/2024 07:53

The heating goes on if we are cold and we haven't been that cold yet as it has been pretty mild in London this autumn, I haven't even got my wool jumpers out yet!

The heating has been on for a couple of hours on the odd evening or so to take the chill off but that is it so far.

RampantIvy · 12/11/2024 08:00

I feel for those who can't afford heating and understand why they are holding out.

I'm not tough and hate feeling cold, so our heating has been on for ages. It's currently 5 degrees outside. We live in a detached house on the edge of the Pennines for context.

BlueyInsideVoice · 12/11/2024 08:06

Mines been on and off since September.

I'm in the NW and it's chilly first thing in the morning, and of an evening.

I refuse to be cold in my own house - I have a few disabilities that mean being cold causes pain too.

BlueyInsideVoice · 12/11/2024 08:07

Just to add, I'm in a really old house with high ceilings.

DeathMetalMum · 12/11/2024 08:09

It goes on if we are cold. We didn't use it much in October at all. The odd evening here and there. Since Friday the heating has been on morning and evening here. The temp has dropped quite noticeably here and washing coming in cold and damp off the line. Everyone was wearing hats and gloves watching dc play hockey on Saturday afternoon.

My watch said it was 0c this morning but no frost so guessing 1c. I need to set the timer back up on the boiler.

NewGreenDuck · 12/11/2024 08:33

Yes, it flipping well is on! I'm on the Yorkshire coast, there is a freezing cold wind coming from somewhere and I'm not going to be miserable and cold.
