How to deter shed robbers

Limth · 11/11/2024 17:27

Someone was in my garden last night. For various reasons, I suspect it was a recky and they'll be back again to empty the shed.

I've locked everything up. I'll keep the outside light on tonight. I might put some pots across their access route.

What else can I do to deter them? Serious answers welcome but I know what you lot are like!

Sit in the shed all night?

AmberCrow · 11/11/2024 17:28

Light. Noise. Movement.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/11/2024 17:30

Caltraps. You can make them from nails.

Not really.

Loud things. Any bells strung up, aluminum trays, anything noisy and in the way.

Limth · 11/11/2024 17:30

@JayEffSee There are spiders in there the size of small dogs. 😳

Paintball landmines.

This was my plan with pots - make the route a bit of an obstacle course with noisy things!!

Put a large sign on the shed door saying "BEWARE OF THE DOG-SIZED SPIDERS" ??

What’s with the thread title?

ScanaDully · 11/11/2024 17:32

I thought this was going to be about season 1 of Peep Show.

Bignanna · 11/11/2024 17:33

Do you have cctv? If so, is there a big sign saying this?

Borrow a dog (assuming you don't have one, if you do, let it out).
Get a motion activated floodlight.
Employ a random teen to sit in the garden all night (not really).

Also because I bet you've not done this, please report to 101. Police don't know if people are casing sheds unless we tell them.

OrchestralRemoversInTheDark · 11/11/2024 17:37

Fill water supersoakers with something that smells really nasty, or water with a lot of food colouring.

Put a bucket of glitter over the shed door so it lands on anyone opening it.

There must be a video of scary dogs barking on YouTube, get that ready to go on a speaker near a window.

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 11/11/2024 17:37

Recky like recon? Can you bring anything of value like fancy tools inside the house?

Isn't it recce?

SensibleSigma · 11/11/2024 17:40

Hang a bag of dog poo on the door of the shed.
Smear Vaseline mixed with glitter all over the handle.

Remember to clean it off when you decide they aren’t actually coming.

MargaretThursday · 11/11/2024 17:42

CCTV signs.

Limth · 11/11/2024 17:42

I do have a dog. She's small and sleeps very soundly in bed with us at the front of the house.

If I did let her out at a burglar, she'd be excited at the prosp of a new friend 😂

I know you were here printed big on the door with a set of eyes. In florescent paint.

Limth · 11/11/2024 17:45

These are all so great, thank you. I did actually have glitter out the weekend for Xmas card making so I could put that to good use!

Leave the door open. Then you won't have to replace the locks/bolts. Seriously, they are only interested in easily portable items like power tools/toolboxes and such. So bring them indoors to the futility area in your home.

I know this, because despite having an expensive roof box, big thermal ice boxes on wheels and plugable to the electric, various other stuff, they took the drill, sander etc. and the toolbox kit. Nothing else.

I leave it open now. but pull the bolt across.
