Is my 11yo diabetic?

My 11 year old son has been a bit off for a few days, on Thursday he was sent home from school after vomiting x3. He keeps telling me he feels tired and actually had a nap yesterday which he never does. He has been so moody over the last couple of weeks but I put all this down to stress after starting high school and adjusting to the homework amounts etc. Last night i made a roast which is his favourite but he said he wasn't hungry and didn't want to eat it. He then proceded to have 10 wees from 4pm-9:30pm. He slept all night but woke 3x for a wee. This morning he again refused food as he wasn't hungry and was complaining of tiredness. He has always drank a lot and I can't say I have noticed an increase.

I have booked him in to see the doctor tomorrow but just wanted to see if this sounded like it or not?

I'd take him to A&E or the GP today for a finger prick test which will quickly rule out type 1 diabetes, If he's diabetic (and he does have the symptoms), left untreated it can be fatal.
I speak from experience.
Get him seen today.
good luck x

just to add,
my daughter didn't die, thank God, but she was in DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) which can be fatal.

What does his breath smell like? Is it sweet smelling

Urgent appointment needed at a hospital or gp practice today, just needs a finger prick test, even a nurse can check

then book in with gp if fingerprint is normal and ask for a proper diabetic blood test.

but he can’t wait

Probably a urine infection or viral illness, don’t nmean to scare you but these red flags always need treating as an emergency - until proved it’s not one.

(I’ve had two ambulances sent for children that ended up being fine! But better safe than sorry!)

I have just called the doctors again and now have an emergency appointment for 4pm today

I don't think so? It wasn't this morning just normal morning breath 😅he did have what i think was a yeast infection a couple of weeks ago too which we treated and has now cleared

hope it's just a virus of sorts

Normallynumb · 11/11/2024 15:05

Hopefully it's a virus brewing but it's important to check
GP will do a simple finger prick.and if it's high, you may be told to present at A&E
Normal range is between 4-7mmols increasing to 8 after meals for info

Not everyone can smell ketones. I’ve worked in A&E for 20+yrs and have never smelt ketones on a diabetic even when colleagues can

itsgettingweird · 11/11/2024 16:02

Hope all goes well at apt. Glad you managed to get one for today

Midlifecrisisxamillion · 11/11/2024 16:16

Sounds like a urine infection but it's good to get checked out.

LostittoBostik · 11/11/2024 16:18

They will check for both diabetes and a severe UTI.
Good luck xx

LadyGabriella · 11/11/2024 16:20

Take him to A+E tonight. He could be in diabetic ketoacidosis which is life threatening. Hopefully that isn’t the case, but you want to eliminate that risk.

UpUpUpU · 11/11/2024 17:03

Hopefully all is OK OP and it’s just an infection. If it is diabetes, you’ll know and be able to get his started on treatment

CrazyCatLady008 · 11/11/2024 17:26

If he smells like a fruit, take him
Straight to a&e. My son smelt like a fruit and was in DKA and would of died if I hadn't of taken him straight away.

CrushingOnRubies · 11/11/2024 18:56

How did your son get on at the gp?

Purplerain1144 · 11/11/2024 19:51

Hope he is okay and you've been seen!

jivebunnies · 12/11/2024 10:48

any news?

IdylicDay · 12/11/2024 11:54

How did it go, @xxoverworkedandanxiousxx ?

xxoverworkedandanxiousxx · 15/11/2024 13:53

Sorry!! I've not been on.. he's fine! Dr checked his urine and blood sugar there and then and they were fine, he thinks its a virus. He has improved over the last couple of days x
