Do you wash your hands after using the loo?

I can’t believe I’m asking this, but: do you wash your hands after using the loo? Every time? Does it differ for a wee or a poo?

We moved into an old home with a WC (toilet, no sink) in the hallway. We have an open plan living-dining-kitchen, which obviously has a sink and is visible to everyone who visits.

Since moving, I have noticed that so many people don’t wash their hands after using the loo. People I would expect to wash, like my incredibly tidy MIL, cousins, friends who work in medicine, etc. Women and men (who presumably touch their willies whilst having a wee?) alike. I might say as many as 40% don’t wash their hands (or only do sporadically, which makes me think they’re only doing it after a poo?)

I myself wash every time and am admittedly a bit germophobic (I use a towel to open the bathroom door if I’m in public, that sort of thing) but I am honestly flabbergasted at how many people don’t wash after using the loo. I sometimes mention, “there’s no sink there but you’re welcome to wash your hands here” (in the kitchen) but it doesn’t seem to make a difference.

Do I just have an unusually minging social circle or am I alone in thinking most people wash their hands every time after using the loo?

No one, but no one, is going to admit that they don't. Trust me.

Futurethinking2026 · 09/11/2024 22:29

Yes every time BUT I’d feel weird going into your kitchen after using the toilet and finding a hand toilet / tea towel situation.

Upgrade the toilet and get a sink.

ProvincialLady24 · 09/11/2024 22:31

I always wash my hands after using the loo and always upon entering the house and before cooking or eating.

fourelementary · 09/11/2024 22:32

Always. But also a germaphobe type person with the sore hands to prove it sadly

This is what I do too. You never know what you've touched outside

BoobyDazzler · 09/11/2024 22:33

Always after a poo or in public toilets and 90% of the time at home…but not after a wee during the night.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 09/11/2024 22:34

Hell yes. Horrible not to, whatever the time... But fit a sink for crying out loud.

Tooffless · 09/11/2024 22:35

You need to fit a sink

thistimelastweek · 09/11/2024 22:35

I always wash my hands after using the loo.
But never ever in the kitchen sink where food is prepared.

Don't know what I'd do in your set up. Probably wash my hands in the kitchen sink but I'd be thinking on the food prep.

I'm with you here. I don't wash hands after a week at night....other than that I always do.

RabbitsRock · 09/11/2024 22:37

Always. It’s shocking how many people don’t. Puts me right off serve yourself salad bars etc 🤮

Floranan · 09/11/2024 22:37

I always do, I use a walking stick and I wash that at least once a day too, I don’t know why, I just feel I should. I can tell when people don’t because the water pump is quite loud and being in the airing cupboard in the middle of a bungalow you can hear it in most rooms. It surprising how many people don’t wash.

That's exactly what I was thinking too about OP when I read this...I wouldn't feel comfortable using a kitchen sink after using a toilet to wash my hands, and drying hands there either.

Put in a corner sink in the WC.

SwordToFlamethrower · 09/11/2024 22:37

Only after a poo, and if after a wee, where I got a bit of wee on me.

llamalines · 09/11/2024 22:38

Yes, I wash my hands EVERY time I use the loo - except sometimes in my friend's house with no sink in the loo, where I feel uncomfortable washing my hands in her kitchen sink.

Having said that, men especially are minging and loads don't wash their hands after going to the loo.

Ilovemyshed · 09/11/2024 22:38

Fit a sink, and meanwhile, leave a bottle of hand gel 🤷🏽‍♀️

Samandytimlucypeterolivia · 09/11/2024 22:38

I wash my hands after toilet (both), dog walking, transport, putt8ng the bins out… literally anytime someth8ng could have been touched by other people.

Actually I lied when I said always. I don’t over night either. Wee in the dark and stumble back to bed.

wishing3 · 09/11/2024 22:40

I don’t after a wee at home often. But it exacerbates my eczema. And I’m clearly a minger!

Himawarigirl · 09/11/2024 22:40

We don’t have a sink in our downstairs toilet. There wasn’t one when we moved in and even the smallest options we could find don’t fit. Everyone we have over seems to manage. And we have some hand gel in the toilet in case people prefer that over the kitchen sink.

EmeraldRoulette · 09/11/2024 22:42

@weedetective how do you not shout "hands" at them when they walk out of your loo and don't wash?

Franjipanl8r · 09/11/2024 22:47

I couldn’t have guests who didn’t wash their hands after the loo. But then I couldn’t have a loo without a sink either.

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 09/11/2024 22:47

Always apart from midnight wees. We don’t flush either because the system makes a bit of a racket and wakes everyone up with clanking pipes. I do keep some hand gel by the bed though so squirt that on most of the time.

I’m a shy wee-er in public toilets. Fine if they’re very busy like a bar or concert but just the three stall ones, no background noise and one other person and I can’t go. I wait for the hand dryer to go on so I can pee and you’d be amazed how often there’s no sink noise and no dryer just flush and straight out. Happens a lot at work and I’d love to know who the dutty pigs are.

Thatcastlethere · 09/11/2024 22:47

I'll admit that I don't always wash after a wee but only in my own home. But that's because I have severe eczema on my hands and I really have to limit how many times I wash my hands a day. I always wash my hands before I prepare or touch food. But I admit here on an anonymous site that I don't always after using the loo for a wee. My hands are often cracked and bleeding and washing them is painful. So unless I actually get wee on my hand so I can feel it, I do avoid washing my hands.
