If you won the 15 million lotto jackpot tonight, what would you do with the money?

Get a small house with a garden. Three decent sized bedrooms. With a spacious back garden and a nice driveway. (I currently live in a flat) Install a massive catio for my Overload cat.

Learn to drive and buy a VW California van with all mod cons. I feel like exploring the UK and Europe more.

Set up my daughter in her own house.

Go to New Zealand and possibly some Pacific islands too. It looks beautiful there.

Get some decent clothes and get a cobbler to make me some boots that fit.

Get back into learning with a view to completing a degree.

Volunteer!

Upupandaway10 · 10/11/2024 02:10

Quit my job. Buy a bigger house and nice car. Give family members money.

Donate to local charities and good causes.

Buy holiday home somewhere hot.

Enjoy financial freedom!

Aria999 · 10/11/2024 02:14

Pretty much exactly what I do currently except would take on less work, get a housekeeper and have more expensive holidays.

QueenBitch666 · 10/11/2024 02:18

Move away from people

Darkautumnnights · 09/11/2024 21:54

Very little

I don’t have a mortgage and I wouldn’t move

i woukdnt pay off anyone else’s mortgage either.
I also dont think I would give up work

I would however replace my kids car as it’s on its last legs, but they would still have to share. I’d get a polo of something

I would buy each of them a 2 bed flat in zone 2 and I would only fly business if I am going anywhere further than Europe.

I wouldn’t pay for their uni or repay their loans

finally I would make a research donation to the royal Marsden for a specific project

I was one of the last to have university funded by the government and it hasn't done me any harm. I even got given some extra government money to live on.

I don't think it would harm your kids independence to have help with education costs.

Ebabllisstggoffor · 10/11/2024 02:31

I’d set up a horse rescue. I would open a business alongside it, so it would keep running after the money ran out.

wavingfuriously · 10/11/2024 02:50

Run !

mjf981 · 10/11/2024 04:33

Buy a lovely house and a few acres of land - perhaps in the Byron hinterland (Australia), where I could grow my own food year round and become self sufficient. Buy a small crash pad in Potts Point, Sydney, overlooking the harbour, for when I got bored of the rural life and for NYE (fireworks). Definitely quit my job but volunteer within my profession. Spend a lot of time visiting family overseas. Anonymously give money to friends who don't have much money.

Ladyof2024 · 10/11/2024 06:58

Oh this is a really easy one for me.

I would find all the women on Mum's net who are desperate to leave their abusive husbands and boyfriends but don't have the money, message them privately and offer to send a taxi to take them to a hotel where I will pay the bill for them to stay and be fed and their children of course, and then I would pay for each one of them to have the best family solicitor to guide them through the divorce.

It would give me more satisfaction to help other women to get out of horrible situations the to spend the money on myself.

Mummadeze · 10/11/2024 07:31

I would like to buy a new house near whichever school or college my autistic DD ends up at next year so that she can stop taking the train on her own every day. I would also buy us a flat in Central London for after nights out like one of the other posters as we love going to the theatre together. And then a weekend home somewhere peaceful and pretty, maybe near the coast. I would quit my job and maybe try my hand at designing cute bags, pyjamas and purses. I would treat my parents and sister and family to an amazing experience of their choice to thank them for the help they have given me over the years. And I would play tennis every day!

Yes, I would love to fund this. And also a really peaceful and healing refuge for them to spend some time in.

I actually volunteer for a charity helping women in these situations as I know that I was so lucky to have family who could help me when I escaped (and when I discovered that the current court and child maintenance system means the men then get to abuse you all over again in new and relentless ways)

But it's interesting isn't it how rare philanthropy is these days. There are so many disgustingly obscenely wealthy people yet very few seem to want to part with it for good causes

Deathraystare · 10/11/2024 09:01

Buy a house. Not a mega huge one. Adopt some cats. I would not leave my job because it keeps me ticking over. Would go for a slap up meal and treat my friends. Arrange for us to go on holiday somewhere. Go on another cruise (or three!). Give some to family and some charities.

Living expenses, of course but I wouldn’t ever pay the fees

Webbb · 10/11/2024 12:17

I have definitely thought about this late at night when I can't sleep! I imagine the following:

-Telling my loved ones we are giving them money to buy a house/pay off mortgages

-Flying by private jet on holiday somewhere a few hours away, us and the DC

-Buying a nice house, not massive, just perfect for us as empty nesters on the beach somewhere pretty

-Making charity donations to places that matter to me regularly, and scrolling gofundme and making donations, things like that. All anonymous. I'd order an enormous monthly delivery to my local foodbank, a lorry full... things like that. I enjoy thinking about this! And I love @Ladyof2024's idea too, I'd like to do that.

-Getting gorgeous cars for me and DW

-Enjoy retired life together, travelling first class (after doing as many 'fear of flying' courses as I need first)

LawyersWig · 10/11/2024 12:19

I'd give my sister money to save our childhood home from having to be sold 😭

I'd buy a country cottage and a couple of holiday homes. And invest the rest for my DS.

BinkyBeaufort · 10/11/2024 19:08

I would give a great big chunk of it to DD so that she could give up the job that is wrecking her mental and physical health.
Anything above that would be a bonus, although I would love DH to be able to join me in retirement before he drives himself over the edge too.

Letitgoe · 10/11/2024 19:13

Pay off the mortgage then look for a new house with a private driveway (where if you pop
outside you won’t accidentally bump into a neighbour). Not a massive house but 4/5 bed with a gym / office and garage.

I would donate some, local scout group and things for the local community.

I would maybe give some to family and friends (I’m in two minds as money can change people so I might also keep it a secret or tell them we won half a million to buy the new house but not enough to share)

Look into private school for my kids and get a new car. I have always wanted a Volvo

freddyfluffball · 10/11/2024 19:22

I would give my friends and siblings a fair chunk, 500k would make a massive improvement to their lives. In fact I'd probably give about half of it away on the basis it would spread happiness to those I love far more than me keeping it all. All I would want is a mortgage free home by the coast at Rye Harbour (snug cottage) plus a dog, plus to be able to go part time at work or retrain to be a teacher. I couldn't give up work, I'd be bored out of my mind.

Cerialkiller · 10/11/2024 19:48

Right...

Put a big chunk aside (maybe 2million) to allow my disable son to live like a fucking king once we are gone. DD could go live her life guilt free in the knowledge that he is being looked after and she can just drop in and play with his vast toy collection and hang out.

Buy a modest 5 bed detached house with a nice garden.

Keep my job but stay part time as i love it and its very flexible.

Pay a full time crew of people to be very discrete but to privately tutor my son, keep the house clean and make most of the food, mow the lawn, clean the pool etc.

Go to great lengths to pretend that my business has suddenly done very very well so i can say that's where the money came from and i can treat everyone to fabulous holidays and catered Christmases etc.

DH would instantly take early retirement, i love the idea of starting a pair of businesses next door to each other. One called 'Retro' an eighties style classic arcade (dh's dream) and next door would be 'Vintage' a full on frilly, charming tea house where i would make all the scones and cake fresh to order. there would be a joint garden with a fab play area undercover so it would cater a wide crowd. Nerds, young and old, girls day out, families, mothers with toddlers, grandparents etc etc.

If i could afford it, i would like to buy plots of development land in my city and return them to parks and plant trees.

Webbb · 10/11/2024 20:02

@Cerialkiller that's the best business idea ever

Beezknees · 10/11/2024 20:09

First - buy a bottle of something and get merry.
Second - call work and quit.
Third - buy a house as I am not a homeowner.
Fourth - get some financial advice on how to invest the rest for myself and DS.

Then I'd spend my time seeing the world and volunteering with animals. I would also pay off my mum's mortgage and give her a sum so she could retire early as she couldn't afford to otherwise.

'Bows'

I know right! I hate to stereotyped but the boys would (mostly) end up in the arcade and the girls (mostly) in the tea shop and it would encourage cross over.

Its a big annoyance of mine that there are very few places you can have 'nice' food while also having something for the children. Its either fishfingers and soft play or gastropub and trying to keep the kids quiet.

Oh yes, I would adopt all the cats and dogs abandoned abroad and pay for them to shipped over to live in my dog and cat sanctuary.

Aside from helping family and certain friends who I feel deserve a hand...

Buy the two fields, track and farm buildings bordering our garden and turn them into a mini rewilding project that's open to the public.

Landscape our garden and put in a natural swimming pool.

Buy a nice house in London.

Give a lot to small charities.
