What are your unwritten house rules ?

Need to go to the shops but the washing machine is on. I don't want to pause it and one of the unwritten house rules is "Don't go out when the washing machine is on"

So I've had to wait until it's finished. Luckily it's a short wash so not too long.

What are your unwritten house rules?

No eating in bed (kids are a bit loose with that one)

DisplayPurposesOnly · 09/11/2024 11:17

Not leaving washing machine or oven on, or chargers plugged, in when no-one's home.

No bottles in the shower.

Toilet lid down.

Tea towels are for dishes, not hands.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 09/11/2024 11:18

No bottles in the shower.

Oops, LEFT in the shower.

Samanabanana · 09/11/2024 11:20

I just put the washing machine on and left the house. I've clearly missed some kind of memo here!

I often go out leaving washing machine on. I wouldn't if it were a washer-drier though due to the fire risk.

Usnone · 09/11/2024 11:24

If I'm busy, sing or cough from a distance so I hear you in the vicinity & don't scream when you "appear out of nowhere". Just talking as you approach isn't enough to break the concentration of this hyper focused biddy.

Why don’t you dry your hands with tea towels?

do you dry your hands on a hand towel in between washing the dishes and drying them?

unwritten rules in my house are no shoes upstairs, if you are not using a room turn the lights off.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 09/11/2024 11:29

No reading in bed in the mornings (because otherwise I don't get up til I've finished the book).

No eating in bed. Not sure that's a rule rule, it doesn't really come up.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 09/11/2024 11:34

Yes, if i wree drying them straight away. More likely: wash dishes, place on drainer, dry hands on hand towel, go do something else, return to dry off dishes with tea towel when most water drained, put away dishes. (Another unwritten rule - I don't like soggy tea towels so will leave dishes to drain for awhile...)

Cheetahprintbakinglady · 09/11/2024 11:36

If it’s raining - the twinkly lights at the fireplace get switched on.

Because we all feel gloomy if it’s gloomy outside and it cheers us up!

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 09/11/2024 11:38

No food or drink upstairs apart from water.

Shoes off.

Washing out of the machine as soon as it finishes. Cannot cope with washing left in the machine to fester.

Houseplanter · 09/11/2024 11:38

If you open a window or leave a door open when the heating is on you won't hear the end of it.

Windows and doors are opened often, but absolutely not when the heating is on. I am not paying to heat the garden.

dudsville · 09/11/2024 11:41

I never thought of requesting this! 17 years of being approached unexpectedly, also dh is hard of hearing so can't regulate volume. All that, coupled with me being a bit sensitive, is a recipe for temporarily but daily frayed nerves!

In a similar vein though, our unspoken thing is when he comes to show me something on his phone, because of my eyesight, I have to get right up to his phone, which leaves me vulnerable to his volume choice. He's learned to speak quietly then, I think resulting from an incident where I responded physically. I'm not proud.

gamerchick · 09/11/2024 11:42

You can pause the wash. Nothing will happen. Just don't leave it running and go out.

Everything off before bed bar the router and fridge. No charging phones or anything overnight unless from a power bank.

ohtowinthelottery · 09/11/2024 11:42

I do go out and leave the washing machine on - although it's usually beyond the heating the water stage. I won't allow the tumble dryer or dishwasher to be on when we're either out or in bed at night.
All internal doors to be shut when the house is empty or we're in bed.

Yes of course!

Hand towel: thick and coarse as it's for drying wet hands
Tea towels: thinner as it's only for drying pots, which aren't all that wet.

If you dry your wringing wet hands on a tea towel it's instantly soaked and unusable.

MyEarringsAreGreen · 09/11/2024 11:44

Everyone helps to clean up after dinner.
No eating upstairs
Dirty stuff doesn't get washed unless it's in the washing basket

If the brain throws a wobbler while it's on rinse it'll just keep pulling in water until it floods the room.

What do you think happens if the brain throws a wobbler and it gets stuck on spin?

CurlewKate · 09/11/2024 11:46

We always had and still have the single house rule "Don't be a dngbat"

Covers everything.

LeavesTrees · 09/11/2024 11:47

Landing light always goes on at night

don't open the curtains if the room light is on

no chargers plugged in at night

and the MN favourite - only answer the door if we are expecting someone!

CrystalDeCanter · 09/11/2024 11:51

Excuse me for being thick but why don't you go out if the washing machine is on? I often run mine when I'm out/over night and it's always, fine.

Nothungrycat · 09/11/2024 11:53

Keep loo seat down (because otherwise cat drinks out of toilet bowl). Don't flush loo overnight unless absolutely necessary.

I don't understand this phrase - "if the brain throws a wobbler". The brain of the machine?
In >30 years of living with communal washing machines, there have been no washing incidents. And since it's a communal room, these have not been supervised. How often do these things happen over there in the UK that so many people don't leave their houses while machines are in use?

JustinThyme · 09/11/2024 11:57

No closing the curtain until the outside pets are put to bed.

No coffee in a tea mug; no tea in a coffee mug.

Eggs don’t go in the fridge; ketchup does.

Air fryer baskets sit on the counter after use and not in the air fryer until they’ve been washed (because DH would put them back in the air fryer and forget and I’d find 4-day-old chips and fat when I wanted to use it. Ffs)

Post It note saying OUT goes on the front door when the adult kids go out for the evening so no one* accidentally puts the bolt on when going to bed while they’re still out.
