What are your unwritten house rules ?

Need to go to the shops but the washing machine is on. I don't want to pause it and one of the unwritten house rules is "Don't go out when the washing machine is on"

So I've had to wait until it's finished. Luckily it's a short wash so not too long.

What are your unwritten house rules?

No going out when tumble drier or oven is on.

no internal doors closed - for the cat😊.

no vacuuming after 8pm - for the neighbours

Caspianberg · 09/11/2024 11:58

I wouldn’t get anything done if I didn’t leave a washing machine on. I do our bed and breakfast laundry and I definitely don’t stay in the laundry room all day watching machines go around. Stuff gets washed and dried whilst I do nursery drop off or food shop, or work elsewhere

Here kitchen is cleaned fully after every meal. It’s a small kitchen diner, so we can’t prep next meal, drinks, or use table for work or crafts easily if the last meal wasn’t tidied away.

I don't understand this phrase - "if the brain throws a wobbler". The brain of the machine?
In >30 years of living with communal washing machines, there have been no washing incidents. And since it's a communal room, these have not been supervised. How often do these things happen over there in the UK that so many people don't leave their houses while machines are in use?

Industrial machines usually get maintained/replaced. How many of us get someone in to check over a washing machine?

People never believe that washers are a fire risk, it's always 'ive always done it and it's been fine' until the day it isn't. It's no skin of my nose but I hope none of you who take them for granted are my neighbours.

You're not supposed to leave them unattended.

StarSlinger · 09/11/2024 12:00

I went to Tesco this morning and left my washing machine on. Washing all done when I got back. No way was I waiting the hour for it to finish.

WeWillGetThereInTheEnd · 09/11/2024 12:01

Shoes off in the hall

No ball games in the house

We take it in turns in the mornings, to get up, feed the cats and make a hot drink for us both to have in bed, while we read the papers on our I Pads

DH gets breakfast (eggs and fruit, or cooked breakfast), while I mainly get dinner. He generally cooks, if other people come round

Whoever cooks, the other washes up the stuff, which can’t go in the dishwasher, then makes us both a hot drink

They are my cats, and I look after them, although DH feeds them sometimes

DH has to deal with vomit in the house, as I can’t

DH has to deal with the cats’ mice, dead or alive (DH isn’t squeamish and I am)

Never close internal doors, as the cats start scratching them, or pulling up the carpet

Never leave meat, butter or cheese unattended on the table, as the cats will eat them

Never prepare food on the worktops, as one of the cats walks about on them. Always use a chopping board or plate underneath the food

IceSkates · 09/11/2024 12:01

Nothing out of the ordinary….

Shoes off in the house

Toilet seat down

Window open in the bathroom if having a shower or a jobbie

Oh, I’m also another one who leaves the washing machine on, even if I’m going out. In fact I often put it on first thing, do the school run, might go to a playgroup with dc straight after dropping big sis off, by the time we get back, it’s done.

I turn off all other kitchen appliances at night though😬

Thesilkinsideachesnutshell · 09/11/2024 12:01

No shoes indoors.

Bathroom doors closed as we have a bengal who would live in the bathrooms if we let her.

Front door always locked, side gate always locked with padlock on.

All soft drinks and chocolate live in the fridge and must be icy cold before consumption (this one is a joke, it's just how I like it!!)

JustinThyme · 09/11/2024 12:06

Leftovers for the fridge or freezer need a label.

Shoes or bare feet are fine outside; socks are not.

The person who cooks must also clear up.

If we’re down to 3 tins of tomatoes, we need more tins of tomatoes in the shopping (Ditto one block of cheese and one bulb of garlic)

Whoever has a cat on their lap is allowed to instruct someone else to make them a cup of tea, and the non-cat-lapper is obliged to comply with this order.

TeenToTwenties · 09/11/2024 12:15

If I don't eat it and it is near to finishing, put it on the shopping list.

mitogoshigg · 09/11/2024 12:18

No eating In bedrooms, definitely nothing with crumbs (suspect kids break this rule as adults) otherwise I'm really laid back apart from telling me if you are home for food

Hardlyworking · 09/11/2024 12:20

According to the latest statistics, there is a 0.002% chance of your washing machine catching fire in any given year (approx 600 per year, approx 30000000 UK homes). Considering these stats are for all washing machines in the UK (and I bet most of these are old, badly repaired or plugged in to an overloaded socket), I think I'll be fine leaving my 3 year old LG unattended.

I'm roughly 12 times more likely to be seriously injured on the roads while I'm out, than my washine machine catch fire while I'm gone.

ChocHotolate · 09/11/2024 12:24

No bare bottoms on the sofa

TheChosenTwo · 09/11/2024 12:30

Not really any tbh. Just pick up after yourself.
Always leave machines running when I go out, they’re supposed to make life more convenient and I wouldn’t find it convenient to have to hang around for things to finish before I went out.
i do know someone who had an appliance catch fire but only one person and the appliance was donkeys years old so im happy to take my chances. Never go round switching anything off at night either except lights and tellies off obviously.
i suppose one thing i do subconsciously is shut internal doors. All our doors are fire doors and I remember a firefighter friend telling me years ago that they’re only fire doors if they’re closed - it stuck with me.
But I’m not religious about it and I don’t go all around the house closing them, just if I pass them and notice they’re open.

gingeristhenewblack43 · 09/11/2024 12:30

I've had a washing machine fire. Luckily something woke me up. Prior to that I never gave it a second thought to putting the washer on and going to bed / going out. Now I don't do that.

No appliances on over night.

No charging devices over night.

All downstairs doors shut over night.

Handyweatherstation · 09/11/2024 12:32

No phones to be used at the dining table and they must be put out of sight. You make a mess, you clear it up. Open the bathroom window after showering or having a dump.

cakeorwine · 09/11/2024 12:40

Going on holiday - stop cock is turned off for the water.

I do like the cat on the lap rule

I have never ever known a washing machine to flood. I leave mine on all the time, don't even think about it.

StarSlinger · 09/11/2024 12:41

Don't sit in my place on the sofa. The cushions are arranged for my maximum comfort. Also don't ask me any questions in the morning until I've had at least one coffee. Other than that I don't care about shoes on in the house or eating upstairs etc.

Mine has.

Also had a flood when the hot water tap flexi connection burst - so a bit paranoid about water in the flat. Especially as I live above someone.

No chopping garlic on the breadboard (or onions…or anything other than baked goods)

Cherrysoup · 09/11/2024 12:44

I don’t like the dryer running if I’m out, probably a bit OTT., but I’ve read that they’re the biggest cause of house fires.

supersonicginandtonic · 09/11/2024 12:46

If I stayed in when my washing machine was on I'd never leave the house 🙈
