I'm emerging from a long period of ill health and am looking to catch up on the world...

So hope you can help me out and start a good discussion about what you see as the

  • 5 best things this government has done
  • and the 5 worst

Looking forward to hearing what you think

Are you a journalist?

Doggymummar · 08/11/2024 16:27

It's too early yet, ask again in about three years

BrunchBarBandit · 08/11/2024 16:36

It’s only been 4 months!

loveyouradvice · 08/11/2024 16:59

Im not a journalist - Im just me!

Hoping some people will come back with some good and bad stuff.... I applauded the budget and am optimistic about Wes Streeting given what he's said and done so far...

Worst thing - reducing the right to buy discount for existing tenants. I think you have to apply by 21 November to get the current discount . I know there’s a shortage of social
housing and this needs to be phased out but it should be done in a fairer more gradual way.

Boomer55 · 08/11/2024 17:05

I voted for them, but they have proved to be pretty hopeless so far.

Can’t think of anything positive. 🤷‍♀️

sunshinechaser · 08/11/2024 17:09

Worst-gone for small businesses and raised NI.
For us personally-VAT on private schools. Our local school is not great and has loads of issues with violent kids and bullying. It feels personal and nasty and the politics of envy.
Can't think of anything good yet.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 08/11/2024 17:24

Worst:

NI lowering of threshold

NMW increases - 16%+ for some (agree with the increase but not the impact on some sectors)

Stopping winter fuel payments- should have been a higher threshold than 'on pension credit'

IHT on farms ... while going to bloody feed us in future.??

Increase in stamp duty ... prohibits growth

VAT on private schools ... saves the country a fortune not educating those kids (no I didn't go private

Best:

Dealt speedily and harshly with the rioters.

scalt · 08/11/2024 17:32

Perhaps before they were in government, but I think they should have voiced objection to their former leader Tony Blair being knighted.

He was a liar and a mass murderer, who should be in prison. Those with less money than him can be jailed for lying about who was driving a speeding car; yet he told a much bigger lie.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 08/11/2024 17:50

Hmmmm not sure I can think of five yet…

worst imo
IHT on farms
Not losing CB cap
keir starmers inability to translate shirt collar size to his actual neck size

best imo
raising some taxes and charges - DH owns a small company and will have to pay a lot more now in employee NI and thinks this is a good thing as the countries need more money!
ending right to buy
stopping some winter fuel payments though maybe the threshold is too low?
VAT on private schools
investment in nhs
my DH works in green tech and said there is investment coming in this area

Sandyhand · 08/11/2024 17:59

Worst:

  • mislead voters about their plans
  • their first big decision being removing the wfa
  • NI rise - penalising workers and business when what we need is growth in order to get what we want (higher wages). Also possibly inflationary.
  • private school vat - just spiteful, especially half way through a year. Utter bastards for doing this. No sane country taxes education and tries to get rid of a successful sector of the economy. Absolutely no thought that loads of teachers will lose jobs and the disruption on a schools. Just a political move and damn the prime who suffer.
  • farm IHT changes, another spiteful, ill thought out move.
  • proving that when people say they don’t vote because ‘they are all as bad as each other’ they are right > long term impact on democracy.

Good - seem to be continuing previous govt plans to restrict smoking further

  • nothing else.

Assuming this affects you? I can't it would affect many people though

StarDolphins · 08/11/2024 18:14

Worst…
Changes to farm IHT
WFA
Employer NI
chuvking money at NHS when it need reforming then extra funding
seemingly not having a proper plan..how is the NHS/Dentistry going to be fixed etc

Best…
Child benefit cap
I also think (hope) they’ll be better for animal welfare.

loveyouradvice · 09/11/2024 20:10

this is really interesting ... thank you!

Failed to define a woman as an adult human female.

Failed to stand up to the cuts to education.

Failed to stand up to the obvious backdoor cuts to the NHS.

Failed to stand up to the cuts to mental health support services.

Failed to prevent Vaughan Gething becoming first minister for Wales. Someone must have noticed what he was like - I bloody did when we were NUS officers!

caringcarer · 09/11/2024 20:41

Worst

Taking WFA from all pensioners except those on PC. Should have been a higher threshold. Do they want pensioners to die? As they have a report stating almost 4000 will die I can only assume they do.

NIC increases for businesses. This will stifle growth.

Not moving the threshold for first time Buyers on first house purchase.

Tax on passing on farms to future generations. One farmer has already committed suicide because of this. Don't they want food security for UK.

Interference with US elections. This was a really stupid thing to do. After Lammy, Raynor and a couple of other Labour MP's had already insulted Trump.

Best

Absolutely nothing good been done.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 09/11/2024 21:15

Best
Taking away WFA from wealthy pensioners including those who live abroad in hot countries
Increasing the state pension by more than inflation
Increasing the NMW by more than inflation especially for younger people

VAT on private education
Breakfast clubs in schools
Increasing investment in the NHS
Sorting out doctors' pay
Increasing investment in education ( but still not enough)
Investment in the green economy
Pensions and businesses included in inheritance tax ie closing the loopholes
Banning tobacco sales to young people
Taxing non doms
Building more houses and hopefully not allowing social housing to be be bought by private individuals i.e stopping the right to buy
Pledging to honour compensation to blood infection victims and Post Office scandal victims

Worst
Not increasing the tax thresholds
Not taxing wealth
Not sorting out the Equality Act to protect sex based rights

They've been in government for 5 months
