Here's some to get us started:

"There's broken glass on this steak."
It was fancy coarse ground salt.

"I can't eat from a square plate. It's bad feng shui."

Any more?

Costa is one. Generally where the cup is corrugated not smooth

Thanks I’ll report back

ThatAgileGoldMoose · 07/11/2024 21:47

"Nothing foreign on my plate please." We went through every item line by line. She ended up with plain poached fish and broccoli.

Same customer: "Why didn't you give me the garlic butter and salsa verde?"

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 07/11/2024 21:48

If it helps anyone Asda take both Scottish and NI notes without blinking an eye. Well they do here in my midlands based one. They are accepted by the self scans also so you don’t even need to worry about the cashier looking at you askance. Most of our cashiers are fine but the occasional one will need to call a supervisor over to have a squint.

Costa is never warm enough in the first place to be hot an hour afterwards.

DevilledEgg · 07/11/2024 21:50

Retail here, we get the same twats.
"Are you opening your till"
"No, I'm dealing with a medical emergency"

There was a customer who had collapsed (in his full view) and got a nasty head injury on the way down and I was on the phone to 999. Literally every other staff member was serving and there was 1 person with 1 item infront of Mr Important. He huffed and puffed then STEPPED OVER THE PATIENT as he left despite people being directed to the other door by security.

I had a similar experience to your last one! I was directed to be informal and homely at the American style burger restaurant I was waitressing at during university, and a horrible male customer loudly exclaimed to his table’s amusement how I should address him as sir not “hey guys”. The same customer ordered a starter and then when it arrived said he hadn’t ordered it and to take it away, and then he made fun of me as I had to wait for my manager to take the payment (still training), speaking to me as if I was very slow and stupid. I honestly believe it was because I was a young female who was other wise completely off limits to him.

I was 17 when I started at the restaurant and had so many similar run-ins from arrogant middle aged men. Creeps!

While it's true that Scottish notes aren't legal tender in England, this is largely irrelevant in everyday terms. Many people misunderstand 'legal tender' to mean money that must be accepted for payment of goods/services, e.g. in a shop. It actually has a much narrower meaning - it only applies to the settlement of a debt; if settlement is offered in legal tender and refused, the creditor can't then sue the debtor for repayment

A shopkeeper can refuse any type of note/coin for payment of goods, without giving a reason.

The belief that the legal tender status of Scottish notes in England affects their ability to be used in shops probably does underly the reluctance to accept them; as well as the difficulty spotting counterfeits as mentioned by pp.

They are not usually recirculated in England by banks/large shops who accept them; they're banked and returned to Scotland.

Not me, but knew someone working at Harrods when the IRA bomb went off. They had been on alert for weeks and as soon as they heard the explosion knew exactly what it was.......customer she was serving got the hump they had to leave and couldn't continue with their purchase.

Oh yes. We had a kitchen fire, there was literally smoke billowing into the bar, and trying to get the customers to evacuate, SO many of them angry that I wouldn't sell them chicken nuggets - MATE, THE FUCKING KITCHEN IS ON FIRE!!

TheGreatScotchEggControversy · 07/11/2024 21:54

We don't accept Scottish notes and tbh I'm fed up with the aggression when we refuse to take them.
We can't bank them at the post office, we can't give them as change as no one wants them but mainly we can't spot a forgery.

Not hospitality - dentistry
-pt complained because the hygienist made her teeth clean.

-another complaint via email because he’d been given a freebie tube of toothpaste (given in the surgery by the hygienist which he accepted)
-the hygienist was ‘too gentle’

  • the dentists stomach rumbled during the appointment
-dentist had to leave suddenly one day because his pregnant wife was rushed into hospital - when reception called to explain and rebook he threatened to sue saying ‘she should have planned that better!’

so many stories.

Why though? This is what I don't understand. It's UK currency.

Strictly speaking, Scottish notes aren't legal tender even in Scotland:

How did you handle that one?

The manager kicked them out.

shittestusernameever · 07/11/2024 21:57

We've had customers refuse to leave when the fire alarms were going off. It was so scary

Exactly. Some shops where I live refuse payment via cash entirely, as there's nowhere to bank it. Card or contactless only.

One from my brother who's a chef in his own restaurant.

This chap started creating merry hell because he had found a hair in his food. Suspiciously it was the same colour as his own. Demanded a refund AND a new meal on the house or he would leave bad reviews everywhere.
The waitress asked the man to wait while he went and got the chef. That'll be my 6'3 brother who deliberately gives himself a skinhead to 'stop the tossers' as he puts it. I don't think many refunds are issued once people see him.

SleepingisanArt · 07/11/2024 22:00

Been told the soup was cold and could we reheat it - it was of course gazpacho. You could actually hear the chef laughing!

Had a table that complained loudly all the way through their starters (cleaned the plates) and then sent their steaks back (cooked exactly as they'd requested) and then complained all the way through the replacements but still cleaned the plates. I gave them the bill instead of the dessert menu. When they asked why I said that they obviously weren't enjoying their meal, were upsetting the tables near them with their complaints, so it would be best if they went home for dessert. They asked for the manager who repeated that they were to leave. They asked to speak to the managers boss. I returned to the table, told them I was the owner (true) and I now want them to pay and leave my restaurant. They did.

It shouldn’t be too hot, though - it should be at a temperature where it’s ready to be eaten! I hate it when food is served so hot that I either have to burn the inside of my mouth or wait for several minutes for it to cool down.

The battered haddock is too fishy , the peppercorn sauce is too peppery. My coffee is too hot, honestly folk are bonkers 🤣

To be fair, good fresh seafood is never fishy. That’s a valid complaint.

Dairy free, gluten free, vegan, no eggs, no nuts..

Dessert Menu:

"I'll have the hazelnut crust cheesecake."

While easing out their leather belt a few notches...

I once had a customer threaten to report me to head office because his circular scoops of ice-cream didn't fit all the way to the bottom of his triangular sundae glass

DisabledDemon · 07/11/2024 22:07

I’ve come to the conclusion that some people are actually insane. Mind you, that thought did occur to me many years ago.

Sevenwondersofthewoo · 07/11/2024 22:07

working in a snack bar

Made a cheeseburger with all the trimmings

guy took it, well grabbed it really still in the bag.

he walks away and I hear fuck and he heads back the top fell off give me another one he demands I say that’ll cost you, but it fell off and I went yes I know but you did that not me so you’ll have to be charged. He threw the rest of the cheeseburger at me and stomped off.

I shouted after him your banned as the police drove in as he came back and got aggressive with me. readers he got arrested,

I’ve had the coffee is too hot or too cold depending on what they order.

beardediris · 07/11/2024 22:07

My DC is a chef people with allergies that magically disappear when the desert appears drive him nuts.
But the best complaint; a woman complained her steak wasnt cooked, manager politely told her she’d ordered medium rare she replied “yes I know but just because its fairly difficult to find it doesn’t mean I don’t want it cooked!”
