Funeral Hymn Mystery- Help !!!!

Lazydomestic · 07/11/2024 14:39

My lovely DM passed last week, she put together a funeral plan which helpfully listed The New Life - 342 & 343 which we are assuming would be hymn numbers.

anybody have a clue what hymns they would be !!!

She was raised catholic if that sheds any light on it - no hymn book or bible were left behind 😢

https://www.amazon.co.uk/New-Life-Hymnal-Collection-Societies/dp/1019698500

could it refer to this?

Nikitaspearlearring · 07/11/2024 14:44

Have a look for the New Life Hymnal - there is a pdf you can download.

I'm so sorry about your mum. It's a horrible time xx

Fireworknight · 07/11/2024 14:44

Snap!

Waitingfordoggo · 07/11/2024 14:45

Did she attend a church? If so- see which hymn book they use?

Lazydomestic · 07/11/2024 14:45

Possibly - but the funeral is next week & book wouldn’t arrive by then or for when the service order gets printed 😢

Was she attending a church in recent years? The priest could probably advise if so. There seem to be a few different hymn books that have New Life in the title.

Waitingfordoggo · 07/11/2024 14:46

Sorry, I also meant to say in my post that I’m very sorry for your loss. 💐

Mainoo72 · 07/11/2024 14:48

Do you not have to meet with the priest before the funeral to confirm hymns, prayers etc.? They will know what hymn it is.

Lazydomestic · 07/11/2024 14:53

It’s a celebrant doing the service & she doesn’t know 😢
Sadly she had Alzheimer’s for many years so no priest. We did however get her the last rites premium pass just in case

@Lazydomestic I am sure the local Catholic Church would assist you if you contact them, most churches have websites now with a telephone number or email address

MissFritton65 · 07/11/2024 15:34

@Lazydomestic If you Google New Life hymnal and those numbers you get the following hymns:
Is this a day of new beginnings?
I will sing of my redeemer.

Sorry for your loss and I hope this helps.

waltzingparrot · 07/11/2024 16:26

There's this but not sure the 2 hymn numbers are particularly relevant funeral hymns but they maybe meant something to your mum.

I'd say they're more relevant than the ones other people have posted.

Rescue the perishing, care for the dying
snatch them in pity from sin and the grave
weep oer the erring one, lift up the fallen
tell them of Jesus the Mighty to save
rescue the perishing care for the dying
Jesus is merciful, Jesus will save

(gotta love Fanny J)

Is OP's mum likely to have wanted to spend her funeral telling the bereaved to get on and share the gospel? (or maybe she just remembered care for the dying and likes the tune Grin)

The other one's called Jesus Saves which doesn't get me very far on a search and I don't want to open a midi file right now

Sorry for your loss OP.

I'm a Celebrant...the second of these is definitely a very popular hymn at Catholic funerals OP, so I'm guessing these are the ones and would suggest these to your celebrant and funeral director.

It is usually the Funeral Director who adds the music choices onto the system at the crematorium (most crems use the Obitus system but some use Wesley, just ask and they will tell you). All of these hymns are on there).

If it's a church or chapel service with an organist, then tell the chapel attendant and they'll pass it on to whoever is playing the music.

Thank you for everyone input
I think we got there in the end with Abide with me - strong funeral song with football connections (loved her football) & exit song The Beatles Hello/Goodbye - loved the Beatles and reflects her cheeky side / humour
All typical her - she would have put the hymn book in a safe place

Oh, I love Abide with Me. It is a classic for a funeral. Also love the Beatles choice for the end. I hope the day goes well- I remember my parents’ funerals as uplifting and comforting occasions.
