Why do people exit whatsapp groups?

Genuinely interested in why people do this? Unless it’s for a specific event that you’re not going to, or unless there’s conflict in a group, I don’t really understand it. When you set up a group for people who regularly chat and interact and get on, why would you exit the group?

I joined a yoga class. The instructor said I’ll add you to the WhatsApp group so you can keep up to date with info about classes. I said ok. I got tons of messages from people (who didn’t even attend the same classes) saying ‘great class tonight Deb!’ Ten times over. 7am I’d get a message saying ‘Hi Deb my knee is playing up so can’t make the class today, next week Alan has his op so I can’t make that but hoping to be back by 27th.’ Then a few of them planned a curry night, so 657 messages went back and forth over who was ordering what.

I DON’T GIVE A FUCK!!

So bloody irritating.

This really cracked me up thanks for making my day

Message overload, sometimes it's just all too much - emails, messages on different platforms and the last thing you need is another bunch of messages about something that you have no interest in.

You can be in a WhatsApp group, or you can have a full time job, you can’t do both.

Jesus, what on earth kind of WhatsApp groups are you in?? 🤣

Alwayshockey · 07/11/2024 20:30

I already use most of the functions/settings mentioned (and I still leave groups when I'm done with them!) but I didn't know about the one to stop it downloading photos. Anyone know where in Settings it is on Android please as I can't see it?

Bumply · 07/11/2024 20:43

WhatsApp for me is just for temporary communication about an event I’m planning to be involved in.

Usually delete it once the event is over.

I use Facebook more, although the new ability to create random Messenger chat threads that invite everyone in an FB group by default is an absolute pain. Yes, I’m interested in local news, but don’t invite me to a locally based bitch and stitch chat thread when I’ve never shown any interest in that.

I loathe WhatsApp groups. I always exit if anyone adds me. Can't be doing with it pinging all the time.

I have almost all of my groups muted so they don't ping.

letmego24 · 07/11/2024 20:49

Mine are muted and archived but hate it when there are lots of messages! Just trying not to leave one now!!

@Givemethreerings What?? Really? How can that happen? Time online and electricity to recharge batteries? Never thought of this!

Yes - all those whatsapps (and photos and videos and games and emails) don’t just appear on our screens by magic.

Everything we do digitally involves the vast transfer of data through the internet from one place to another, brokered through datacentres. The data centres are huge physical warehouses powered by electricity and gallons of water to keep the servers cool. I’ve attached a photo of one of these data centres in the Netherlands. Storing all your WhatsApps!

It’s another reason to limit prolific sharing of data (photos or texts) through the internet as it’s contributing to global warming. Weird to think about it when digital feels so ephemeral it’s something we’re all going to have to consider in the near future. I imagine governments will have to start limiting it somehow.

My mate from work once added me to the work WhatsApp group - I left after a week.

I’m not exaggerating, I had over a hundred messages coming through, people were just sending random emojis & talking about what they were having for dinner. It was really annoying, so I removed myself & peace was restored. Job done.

GiantHornets · 07/11/2024 22:16

I wish more people would leave groups.
Im in a Union group for a specific issue. The most active contributors have retired or resigned from work but still post frequently telling us what we should be doing.
Just fuck off!

WildFlowerBees · 07/11/2024 22:19

I've set my WhatsApp so I can't be added to groups because although you can mute once you open it there they all are, inane messages that you don't want.

@Givemethreerings wow, I had no idea of the impact of this! Thanks for the info, really thought provoking and so worrying.

Because of climate change?

Eg the average WhatsApp group chat uses 2.35kg of CO 2 a week

That’s the best reason I’ve ever heard. Thank you!
