Celebs where you don’t expect to see them

I did a drivers awareness course today, one of the online courses where the group joins via teams or whatever it is. You only see everyone’s face and first name.
Anyway, there was one participant that after a while of thinking she was familiar, I realised she’s a TV presenter. I’m certain it was her, but if it wasn’t then this woman with the same name shares an uncanny resemblance.

I don’t spot many celebs where I live so it was quite exciting to be sharing a space with one. Even if it was that particular space. She seemed very pleasant.

Ever had any random celeb spots like that?

Does it really make people feel good to comment some variation of "no idea who they are sorry" on a lighthearted and happy post from OP? Are you trying to show off that you're not concerned with celebrities? or just bring OP down a peg or two? Really don't get it. (OP i would've been overjoyed with Acaster and Marina, podcast idols!)

Sharron Davies( Olympic swimmer)
I knew she lived in the county, but not my tiny riverside town
She’s warm and friendly.

Goditsmemargaret · 16/05/2025 13:15

Yes it is always strange. I remember being in a random conversation on the street with a man once when his friend kept interrupting and talking about his dog for seemingly no reason. I was a bit irritated even though they were both friendly and it was a funny conversation (the circumstances of us all speaking were very unusual). I then thought that man's voice is oddly familiar and realised he was a big Hollywood movie star.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 16/05/2025 14:28

Richard Curtis and his family crabbing in Walberswick.
Joe Pasquale in my local Tesco...garden centre etc he lives nearby.

Donsyb · 16/05/2025 16:03

Jude Law in Waitrose (the person I was with knew him, so he stopped to talk to us). Also Rami Malek stayed at a hotel where I worked. Although that wasn’t unexpected, he had been to Waitrose on his way there from set. Someone saw him there but no one believed her until I confirmed he did indeed arrive at the hotel with his Waitrose shopping 😂

“Once I saw one of the Cheeky Girls at a National Trust property tea room in Kent 😂😂”

DH & I shared a lift with both of the Cheeky Girls in a London hotel. He recognised them; I didn’t.

Radiatorvalves · 16/05/2025 17:24

I sold poppies with Ross Kemp last November. Maria Eagle (Armed Forces Minister) too.

Same hotel in Turkey as a former Today presenter, 20 years ago.

Princess Anne and husband, Prince Andrew and Jim Davidson (I was in the forces), the former were lovely, the latter pretty awful.

Bought a house from a TV chef. Outing to say which one.

Gregory Peck on my flight from LA to Seattle in something like 1997.

Barry Manilow and two or three minders striding through LAX on probably the same holiday.

Ardal O'Hanlon in the check out queue at M&S Kings Road branch (he was buying a sandwich, no drink, no crisps) .

Helen Lederer in front of me in the check out queue at Superdrug, Forest Hill branch. She was buying suncream.

Bruce Foxton on my flight to Rhodes, 1984.

Paul Young cutting through a mews between Tottenham Court Road and Goodge Street. 1985 ish I guess.

Jimmy Nesbitt on the restaurant table next to me on two occasions in my neighbourhood (not that surprising actually as he lives here).

Margaret Thatcher (extreme heavy makeup) being shown into the back door of Peter Jones, Sloane Square to allow her a half hour of private shopping before it opened at 9.30am.

Ditto Kylie (so tiny).

Patsy Palmer in the baby department at Peter Jones buying a cot and buggy when I was buying babygros for my baby in late 1999.

Jo Brand and her toddler daughter in the park when I was there with my toddler daughter (they played on the seesaw together and we had a Mum chat).

Micky Flanagan in my local DIY shop.

Andrew Sachs buying a bottle of white wine in my local Co-Op.

Stopped the car to allow a couple to cross the street in front of me in Kensington on a very heavy traffic day. There was a demonstration going on. The man of the couple was Alan Rickman.

I also saw him (Alan Rickman) in a back street off Berwick Street in Soho. I swear to God he was walking along reading a script.

Jenny Eclair in the local sweetshop at Christmas time.

Sandy Toksvig being hassled by a fan as she was just trying to do her shopping in Sainsburys.

oneeggisunoeuf · 17/05/2025 15:21

My daughter served both Patrick Stewart and Peter Capaldi at the same pub in Huddersfield (not at the same time). She actually said to PC you look really like the guy who plays Doctor Who - her boss then said, as he walked away from the bar, that IS him, and he turned round and grinned at DD.

Hoppinggreen · 17/05/2025 16:50

We were staying in a spa Hotel near Durham a vew years ago and at breakfast I said to DH "that poor man looks like Nigel Farage"
Guess what?

augustusglupe · 17/05/2025 16:51

Just thought of this one. Graham Garden of Goodies fame. He was sat in the reception of a hotel in Barbados, with I presume his wife.
DH was checking in, I plonked myself down opposite them, as there were just 2 sofas facing each other, to sit.
I smiled and he just looked straight through me. Maybe he was hot & tired but so was I, it was quite bizarre. We were sat there like this for a good 10 minutes. Very awkward.
Mind you apparently Bill Oddie is a miserable bastard aswell 😄

Toblerone45 · 17/05/2025 18:23

Nigel Havers stole my lighter circa 1995.

I would have pretended not to recognise him. Let the poor bastard have his holiday in peace, he didn’t owe you anything. Oh and Bill Oddie suffers from depression.

Tim Brooke Taylor died of Covid didn’t he poor guy. RIP.

Occasionally see an actress or actor on the Underground. Last one was Anna Maxwell Martin, who looked as if it was a bad day for her. Turned out it was the day of her interview on Women's Hour about bereavement and grief.

Erm, I did pretend not to recognise him. I smiled politely as I would have to anyone. He just basically stared me out. It was bizarre, that’s why I’ve remembered it.

I was sat in Tides in Barbados with Cliff Richard right behind me. I didn’t turn around once, the person with me told me he was there and I didn’t want to stare, I never would.

Nice of you to bring down a lighthearted thread 😕

Radiatorvalves · 18/05/2025 17:40

DS met the Irish rugby team in the airport. Didn’t want to disturb them as they were “being normal and drinking coffee with their girlfriends”, but he saw one of the coaches in a shop / he was dead friendly and DS got someone to take a picture. DS looks minuscule next to him and he’s 6’2” 🤣

Many years ago the actress Carolyn Pickles was very kind to me on the tube. I was in a hurry jumped off one tube ran across the platform and jumped on another train.. Then had a panic and asked if the train went to where I was going CP calmly told me I was going the right way...
Also saw Matthew Horne on the tube. He's got VERY long legs!!
