Anyone else deleting X / Twitter post election?

I know inconsequential in the grand scheme of things but first thing I did this morning was to delete the app, I'm not even sure why I was still going on there but it's actually made me feel a bit calmer.

I think that's a good idea. It will definitely make you feel a bit calmer about the outcome. The social media world isn't the real world, and X particularly encourages people into extreme positions. Most people are more moderate IRL. Everyone should switch off for a bit.

Dulra · 06/11/2024 13:36

Not on it I honestly don't understand how people are. It just feeds division and hate and is used as a tool by Musk to stir it up

TheGoddessFrigg · 06/11/2024 13:36

Yes because I cant even express the depths of my loathing for Musk. The fact he was actually giving a million quid to people , basically bribing them to vote Trump- and NOTHING was done about it

drdrcantyouhearmecallingcalling · 06/11/2024 13:45

@TheGoddessFrigg I know, it's shocking.

I've spent more time than I ever normally did in the run up to the election so that hasn't helped. It must be worse than usual today (if that's even possible).

obviously not
because X is one of the very few remaining platforms which allows free speech.

Malvala · 06/11/2024 13:50

I’m not even going to open a news website for the next four years.

JasonTindallsTan · 06/11/2024 13:51

I haven’t deleted as i like it for the football content but I’ve muted both the orange egomaniac and the maniacal billionaire spaceman as well as all mentions of their names and it’s far more pleasant already.

JollyJibes · 06/11/2024 13:55

I deleted it when Musk took over and have felt so much better for it. It just made me angry

ComingBackHome · 06/11/2024 13:56

I’m using Twitter to keep in touch with people with the same health condition as me.
There are also many researchers posting about their findings so I don’t want to loose that.

But I went there this am, stayed about 30s and then left. I’m waiting for things to calm down and not be bombarded with the US elections. It’s depressing enough as it is.

And let illegal stuff standing out - like stuff that have been deemed illegal by Courts 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I have a love gate relationship with Twitter.
There are some amazing ressources there.
But it can be a real cesspit.

nomorezoflora · 06/11/2024 15:45

Deleted it in 2016, so I'm right there with you on the reasons!

Free speech as long as Daddy Musk doesn't disapprove, which in practice means right-wing wingnuts and disinformation lies. Enjoy!

Walkacrossthesand · 06/11/2024 15:48

X deleted me at some point - no idea why or when as I rarely go on there & even more rarely post anything. May have happened when it became X 🤷‍♀️
I shan't be bothering to set up a new account...

Same here. I was quite grateful to him, really, for making it so much shitter that it became easier to quit. I really do think it is awful enough to impact people's mental health very significantly.
Even MN is quite a bit like that now, but at least the more hateful parts of it aren't endlessly rammed at us via algorithms.

ConstanceM · 06/11/2024 15:59

Twitter is absolutely grim and a complete hyperbole of hate, resentment and prejudice. There is nothing to be gained from different om scrolling through it. Best thing I ever did for my blood pressure was to ditch it. Half the content isn't even real, it's an algorithm of hate that feeds on itself. Avoid and preserve your sanity

I think he isn't big on censorship in general, I don't think he necessarily seeks to censor things that are critical of him (willing to be proved wrong).
However, censorship isn't the only tool that you can use to ruin healthy discourse. Flooding the "public square" with a 100 different kinds of misinformation will make it impossible for you to hear the one person with actual information. Its actually more damaging and a problem because we know how to deal with censorship (make them stop censoring, sniff out the truth) but a barrage of information and misinformation is harder to deal with. And AI will make it worse.

User505351 · 06/11/2024 16:22

Can you actually delete your account? I can't find an option on the app. I'd like to be completely done with it too.

One day it will probably just be bots arguing with each other. Maybe then the real people will leave the internet and communicate in healthy political discourse in person. Leaving robots to do the important job of calling each other Libtards and Nazis.

Mittens67 · 06/11/2024 16:23

I deleted it after musk’s stirring about the uk riots.
Hateful man using his billions to interfere in the world for his own whims.

drdrcantyouhearmecallingcalling · 06/11/2024 16:50

Elon Musk is an absolute tool. I used really enjoy Twitter but my algorithm just became full of right tossers (who must be foaming at the mouth today).

OP posts:
wonkylegs · 06/11/2024 16:56

It's a real dilemma, DH left and has gone to blue sky but I have a lot of longstanding work & health connections that are invaluable that I don't really want to lose.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 06/11/2024 16:58

I deleted it the morning after Musk took it over. To be fair I hardly used it and I doubt it impacted him much!! But he's such a cunt I couldn't bear to keep my account.

VioletCrawleyForever · 06/11/2024 17:00

Deleted 18 months ago and not missed it once

KikieToo · 06/11/2024 21:32

yes I've deleted mine. Its a shame because there are many lovely, funny, interesting on there but Musk has ruined it.
