The Datai is right up there for me, just wonderful.

Agree with Oman and Silky Oak lodge too

Not a hotel as such but the Witchery in Edinburgh is a restaurant with suites of rooms attached. So beautiful and if you like the history side of life, just amazing.

Either The Balmoral hotel in Edinburgh, or Knockinaam Hotel, on the Dumfries and Galloway coastline. Dh and I stayed at the latter, for two nights, and it was amazing. Churchill stayed there whilst he was meeting Roosevelt, to plan the D Day landings, and we stayed in the bedroom Churchill used - it has a massive bath, made of concrete, in the bathroom, so I have had a bath in Churchill’s bath (he had cleaned it after he used it).

Their food is out of this world.

For London/UK we prefer Claridges to The Savoy. Le Manoir is a close second.

What time of year are you thinking of going as that makes a huge difference in terms of the weather and the best times to visit? Also city or beach holiday?

The Amazing Hotels documentary has some great recommendations. It also has some hotels that are basically tourist attractions and a bit over-run with visitors.

Wading in on Oman... I was underwhelmed by the Chedi - it was very much style over substance, and as it's in the city it's a bit underwhelming driving in from Azaiba with lots of new tall building popping up around it. Al Bustan is lovely, stayed many times -on it's own private sweep of beach, but a little dated. I've stayed the most at the Shangrila Al Husn. Lovely in that it's adult only (but you have access to the other attached hotels). It's got its own private beach, you get breakfast, afternoon tea and an evening cocktail hour with canapes, drinks and a musician(s) as standard. Oh and free mini bar.
Pair Muscat with a stay up in the mountains (Anantara and Alila both excellent)

I was also underwhelmed by the Chedi. We love the One and Only hotels

Stayed in many of the hotels mentioned. Really surprised me as I never thought we were upmarket! But no ones mentioned my favourite .ita at Fort William. The sheets are by Reeds and although cotton they feel like silk. And the staircase….

Strong caveat that I sadly have not (yet) stayed in either but top of my hotel bucket list are the Banff Springs in Canada and Jade Mountain in St. Lucia. Raffles in Singapore is also high on the list.

Banff was hit by the forest fires in the summer so you might want to wait a bit for that one.

Banff didn’t have wildfires, it was Jasper, which is nearby but not that close. Also a pp said the Fairmont Lake Louise is a crusty dump, but we stayed there recently and our suite had just been refurbished. They’re also building a huge new spa.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 07/11/2024 21:06

Banff and Jasper are 112 miles apart.

The Palace Hotel, Tokyo (a room with a view of the Imperial Palace)

Sukhothai Hotel, Bangkok

Parkhotel, Vitznau

That’s the one. Bit further up than Banff. Ignore me.

I went the Fairmont in Banff this summer and was treated appallingly - it was a terrible stay all round very disappointing. My fav is Golden Eye in Jamaica, and Sixth Senses Koi Yoi Noi :) In the UK Grantley Hall.

Ivory Lodge, Lion Sands, Sabi Sands in Kruger National Park - absolutely superb accommodation in the middle of the savannah.
Also Rovos Rail - not a hotel but a very luxurious train.
So fortunate to do both on our honeymoon- unforgettable experience!

For safari, best for luxury was Ngoro Ngoro crater lodge, but I loved Lake Manyara tree lodge even better. Simple, but magical.

I stayed at this lodge in 1985, but don't remember it being particularly luxurious. However the safari down in the crater is mind blowing. It's the one place I desperately want to go back to.

You stayed there nearly 40 years ago 😂

Hamilton island on the great barrier ref was amazing! As was the hotel on lake Louise in Canada. I always wanted to go to shutters on the beach in California,
I suggest browsing old episodes of Giles (now Rob) and Monica for inspiration!!

What hotel in Hamilton island? We are going there next April!

samlovesdilys · 08/11/2024 07:35
