Another one I just thought of but I can't remember what it's called - it's on the Amalfi Coast and it's either part of the Hilton Group or the Orient Express group. Does anyone know the one I'm talking about? I remember going in there for a coffee once and then looking it up online and thinking, "yeah, this is the one I want to visit"

nomorehocuspocus · 06/11/2024 13:59

I've never been there, but friends of mine have - Raffles in Singapore.

Ashford Castle in the west of Ireland. Castlemartyr hotel in Cork is also rather wonderful.

Not a hotel exactly, but the Tea Trails bungalows in Sri Lanka - easily the most high-end place I've stayed.

Hotel Molitor in Paris. It's not mega expensive and luxe, but is utterly fantastic and a lovely way to spend some time in Paris.

The Kahala in Oahu, sheer elegance and utter loveliness

The American Colony Hotel in East Jerusalem. It's beautiful, historic, and located between the Old City and the British Consul Jerusalem / Kenyon Institute. And expensive.

Churchill and TE Lawrence were among former guests.

Celtic Manor in Newport. I bugger off on a solo spa trip as often as possible.

Much of this is a right dump. The nice bits aren't that special either.

Suite at St Regis in Bangkok is where it's at 🙌

What do you like? Adventure, location, luxury, wonderful staff, what's the most important thing?

Jimmyville · 06/11/2024 20:37

I had never even heard of that series..! Very excited to imagine myself as the sort of guest that these places are aimed at.

@MrsTerryPratchett I prefer to go from Heathrow but can really leave from any of the UK airports. I am in Scotland a lot.

I think my dream is rural/beach/safari views but not all inclusive as I like to be able to leave the hotel and drive to a nice restaurant or town within the hour. That rules out most hotel-island type places.

The Fingal in Edinburgh is beautiful- converted lighthouse board ship that's now permanently moored in Leith as a hotel & restaurant. I've eaten there and it was very lovely.

I’d love to stay in the Ritz in one of their suites. So far, we’ve only managed afternoon tea but we were made to feel so welcome, the staff were fab and the food was amazing. Maybe one day 🤞

Babylonstoren in SA
Four Seasons Desroches Island (the only resort on the whole island)

Four seasons on Nevis

The Copacabana Palace in Rio. We couldn't afford to stay there at the time but went for brunch one Sunday during our holiday in Brazil and it was incredible. And obviously stunning location.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 06/11/2024 21:12

The Taj in Mumbai.

It's funny this thread is here

I was thinking yesterday about asking if anyone has stayed at the Ritz in London. Seems to be about £800 a night for a double room. If anyone has been, I'm curious what it's like because I can't fathom a hotel room costing so much!

billycorn · 06/11/2024 21:17

I’m going to piss on a few people’s chips:
Raffles - yes it’s luxurious and the service is good but it is overpriced. Same applies to the Marina Bay Sands. People stay there either as wealthy gamblers or just for the pool, which is human soup. I found the Mandarin Oriental much more agreeable.

Fairmont Lake Louise or Banff. Again, crammed full of tourists, over priced rooms and papered over genteel decay redeemed only by the views.

I was going to recommend Zighy Bay, Oman but it isn’t close to much. Chedi v.nice though.
