The next general election can’t come soon enough.

4.5 years approximately. By which time I expect people to have stopped bitching about the early difficult decisions and to be feeling better off. So we’ll see.
I think the Lib Dems have shot themselves in the foot by siding with the Tories so much, so that might make a difference - if all the more left wing Lib Dem voters (and those who tactically loaned their vote this time) switch to Green or Labour. Or Plaid in Wales - they have good left wing policies.

BustingBaoBun · 20/11/2024 12:41

I have just heard on Politics Live that Badenoch is intending to rotate PMQ's letting others do it ... why on earth... is it because she made a pigs ear of it last time?

Tories had a very big chance... 14 years of chances actually, so you have over 4 years of Labour which I, personally, am pleased about.

Damn. Missed it again! I keep forgetting and am in the shower post rescue dog walk. I should get a move on earlier.

You catch up with it here @cardibach

I’ll bet the ‘difficult decisions’ don’t affect you or yours.

cardibach · 20/11/2024 12:44

It’s a pretty key part of the LOTO job, surely? The opportunity to hold the PM to account and show you are good enough to take t(e job when the time comes?
I guess she must feel she isn’t able to do that 🤷‍♀️

Evenstar · 20/11/2024 12:44

@BustingBaoBun only when she isn’t doing it herself which she has to if Keir Starmer is there, she hasn’t appointed a permanent Deputy PM

Just now? No. But they have in the past. I’m not entirely motivated by self interest in my politics, so if I can see something needs doing I’m ok with paying a bit more towards it.
The fact that my perfectly normal run of the mill working family isn’t affected right now does tend to show that that is the unaffected group. And since that’s what Labour promised in the manifesto and all their messaging before the election, it shouldn’t be a surprise.

I was made redundant directly because of the Tories' difficult decisions. My DH had to go through a horrible process transferring from DLA to PIP directly because of the Tories' difficult decisions.

As for the current government. Every tax payer in the UK is having to deal with the continued freeze of the tax thresholds. RR could have chosen to unfreeze them, but made the difficult decision not to.

I don’t think I’ve actually loathed a group of politicians as much as I loathe this Labour front bench. Venal, petty liars

That seems very strong. I don’t see any evidence of any of those sins (beyond the normal human condition). I won’t ‘whatabout’ but they seem remarkably normal to me.

That’s true actually. That does affect me. And I have no problem with it (as much as I’d like an increase in income).

When Keir Starmer came into power I felt Ok about it because I thought he would be fair and straight in his dealings. But he isn’t. And the old class war has reared its ugly head.

DuncinToffee · 20/11/2024 13:10

More than 1 in 3 children live in poverty but what about class wars

But, again, that’s not how I see it. I think he has been straight. I haven’t agreed with everything they’ve done, but I don’t see anything devious.
And to me the Tories are the party of class war. They prioritise themselves and their mates against the ordinary working people - Thatcher totally destroyed working class communities in several parts of the country, for example. I feel like with Labour the aim is fairness. Granted, it’s not always achieved, but this talk of them ‘hating’ particular groups is madness.

DuncinToffee · 20/11/2024 13:17

Here is a clip of Anderson

https://bsky.app/profile/implausibleblog.bsky.social/post/3lbeyiz2vuk2i

Lee Anderson asks for the decision to be thrown in the bin "along with Rachel from accounts's CV"

Angela Rayner, "He talks about CVS, it's good to see him doing well on his bench. Once a Labour councillor, then a Tory MP, and now a Reform. Every time he switches parties he gets a promotion"

I have lived through Labour governments going back to Harold Wilson and have never felt such a sense of dread.

What are you dreading? Serious question as I would like to understand better.

With the greatest respect, then, I think you may have got things out of proportion. I am 60, so I’ve got a fair memory of governments of various hues too. This one seems competent and serious - as I’ve said, I don’t always agree with them (though possibly for different reasons from your disagreements) but I see no reason for dread and fear. It isn’t whataboutery to point out that they appear to me much better qualified than some recent governments, it’s meant to be reassuring. They are people with experience and - often - relevant qualifications.

Ahhh OK. I only heard it from Jo Coburn on Politics Live and wasn't quite sure what she meant!

Now you know what the last 14 years have been like for some of us. Not nice, is it?

I felt like that about Johnson, Truss, Kwarteng, Cameron, Raab, Hancock, Jenrick, Williamson, Braverman & Patel... but I bet I felt more strongly than you.

They decimated this country and now it is Labour's chance to try against all odds to put things on a more even keel

I think the farming IHT has hit me hard mentally. I don’t expect any of you to understand. The farming community is in fact a community. I can imagine having a reasoned discussion about this with Wilson Callaghan or Blair. Starmer has revealed himself as a closed minded little man.

The Conservatives deserved to lose but I didn’t expect the Labour government to behave in the way they have.
