As far as weather goes, it’s rained, then snowed, then rained again. Bloody cold and damp and miserable though

Same. I think we live in the same area of Wales!

My name relates to my previous home. I’m near Cardiff now.

DuncinToffee · 19/11/2024 12:02

So, who has snow?

We have rain

We have grey drear.

Llttledrummergirl · 19/11/2024 14:03

We've had rain, sleet and snow which didn't settle. It's dark and dreary now.

I thought I remembered you were, we are near each other.

I’m currently sitting in a train heading to the West Country surrounded by farmers returning from the demo. One of them apparently employs 40 people - doesn’t sound like someone who can’t afford IHT to me.

One of the banners read 'stop killing the people that feed you'

Probably a good idea when you want to avoid paying IHT Wink

Clarkson seems to be most upset about the fact that he now has to think of other ways to avoid paying tax

I will just put it in a trust. But it's incredibly time-consuming to do that. Why should all these people have to do that?"

BIossomtoes · 19/11/2024 14:55

They’re complaining about having to pay to have slurry taken away now.

I am right in saying aren't I... that those who have to pay IHT are given 10 years to pay it? And it's 20% compared to the 40% everyone else pays?

BIWI · 19/11/2024 15:33

Yep, that's right.

LittleBowSheep · 19/11/2024 15:37

We had about 1cm here in north-west Wales, and I'm quite above sea-level too. We're having a sunny day today which is lovely after what seems like weeks of grey, low mist. It's cold but it's nice to see the sun.

Yep. Less than anyone else but they’re special. They’re threatening to block the M4 with farm machinery if they don’t get their way. I can’t imagine why they think that would be persuasive.

15cm in Brum.

I'm driving up there Friday evening.

Not the best time to be driving up anyway but I'm hoping the snow won't be an issue by then?

We are off to Sandwell aquatics centre.

Are they copying JSO?

It seems so. That’s going to go well.

This is what I don't understand. Why aren't farms businesses? They could be a proper business rather than one bloke's property, then the business would continue after his death without IHT. Why doesn't that happen? I'm prepared to accept I may be missing something!

The cut through is going to be the large exemption available. The contrast is just so great. People will probably be sympathetic- up until they realise that farmers will in practice receive a large exemption. I mean I like Jeremy Clarkson as a form of entertainment but that is it. He bought a farm because there wasn’t tax. Now there will be. He freely admits the economics of actual farming aren’t why he’s in it

Ironic given that Jeremy Clarkson probably considers 20 mph zones and other measures to stop deaths and serious injuries on roads to be an affront to his liberty.

A farming friend has just posted that clip with the comment that the BBC have picked the wrong person to have a fight with in Clarkson. What is she seeing that I’m not?

It looks like she picked someone the farmers may regret having as a representative.

Clarkson said: “96% of the population of the UK does not pay inheritance tax. After this becomes law, 96% of farmers will.”

The government insists that 73% of farmers will be unaffected by the changes.

Derbyshire asked him: “Where have you got that figure from?”

Clarkson said: “The same place where Rachel Reeves does. From the middle of her head. From the Sixth Form debating society that she was no doubt a member of. Which formed her opinions and yours.”

DuncinToffee · 19/11/2024 19:21

A bit like these two women?

ContactNightmare · 19/11/2024 19:21

The longer it goes on for the more it looks like a very privileged group of people fighting for more tax exemptions. Much like VAT on schools.

Clarkson is a multi millionaire- he’s in it for the tax exemptions so yes, at least his interest is plain.

I agree with your friend. Derbyshire was dripping contempt.

BestIsWest · 19/11/2024 19:25

We’re obviously looking at it differently then. Clarkson just oozes privilege. And misogyny.
