I wasn’t rude to or about anyone.🤔

Apart from anything else you keep mocking KS for being a "man of the people". You're the only one who seems to think he's trying to do this. It's getting dull now.

cakeorwine · 16/11/2024 08:54

If he had been offered honorary membership of a sailing club, a gliding club etc near Chequers, I bet the Tory press would have criticised that decision.

For some reason.

The cognitive dissonance in journalism is impressive.

There are golf clubs that are for everyone and there are golf clubs that definitely aren't. I suspect this is one of the latter.
Personally I don't see why anyone should be expected to join a club for something they aren't interested in. I doubt he is being expected to join the local remote control car racing club or the local bowls club and why should golf be any different.

"We offered him membership of the local bowls club and he turned it down" said John Smith exclusively to the Daily Telegraph,

"Free Gear Kier grabs another freebie" would have been the headline in the papers, had he accepted this membership.

It doesn't matter what previous PM 's did, same with KS renting out his home, criticised for that, despite the fact that Cameron and May also did similar.

He has changed the rules on gifts, so whatever was the norm in the past, it may not be now.

Are you suggesting they would do that headline, without adding any context about previous Prime Ministers?

Surely not.....

Ha ha you re right, of course they would add in the context.... probably about 3 months later on page 279 on their now closed down on line edition.

The 'real' man of the people, Nigel Fagage just declared a payment of £40k for a speaking engagement in the US.

Plus a VIP helicopter ride from JCB worth £8k

SerendipityJane · 16/11/2024 10:26

He told The Telegraph: “I don’t know why he thinks he has any need to reject us out of hand and change 100 years of tradition and history that was gracefully accepted by all of his predecessors" ".

That could have come from an article about Boris Johnson.

I wasn’t rude to or about anyone.

The golf club membership is obviously traditional and honorary. Refusing it is clearly posturing since golf isn’t a game of ‘the people’ - unlike football (even if Starmer is a real life Roger Nouveau).

A KC with a knighthood is hardly the common man, however he presents himself.

But I can see one positive way to interpret the refusal: historically, golf clubs were notorious for being antisemitic and barring Jewish applicants, which is why Jewish golf clubs started. If Starmer is making a pro-Jewish gesture (like Reeves’s pointed reference in the budget speech to support for Holocaust remembrance) and perhaps subtly signalling his support for Israel, then good for him.

That's bonkers. He is only allowed to turn it down to make a so subtle no one would see it pro Jewish statement.

But is isn't allowed to be pro working class, pro black or pro women? Groups thta have also been (and in some cases remain) excluded from golf clubs.

Saucery · 16/11/2024 08:28

Must be the 100 mile radius around where I live, then, because there’s a real mix of people belonging to golf clubs. Have female friends who play or have played, too.

Agree the perception of it being for rich people is not why KS turned it down. He’s made the mistake of being a normal person who doesn’t play the wider Class game and doesn’t want to join a club he probably won’t use.

Edited

Not going to argue, saucery she then proceeds to argue but that does rather depend on what one means by real mix!

I think Scotland is the only UK country with public golf courses. There were some in proper working class areas of Glasgow. Probably been built oevr now but there was one where I grew up.

Golf equipment, proper shoes, green fee and membership are all expensive. Playing the odd game maybe not so much.

It's like cricket these days which used to have proper working class representation but now, apart from in a few areas it is increasingly dominated by the public school attendees.

DH is a golf club member by the way so I have no axe to grind.

SerendipityJane · 16/11/2024 10:46

The less boys clubs our serving PM is involved in the better as far as I can see.

This is just the golf club being pissy as they can't tell their members they can get a private audience with the PM about their "situation" now.

DuncinToffee · 16/11/2024 11:02

A KC with a knighthood is hardly the common man

That is such a weird take, he earned those, he didn't get them handed to him by mere accident of birth or by being added to a pm's honour list.

No problem, Piggy, it’s not arguing, it’s making a fair point! My definition of ‘real mix’ is obviously different to yours and that’s fine.

Interesting first post from a brand new poster.

The mail, express, telegraph, gb n have that story, ofcourse there would be thread started on it.

Lots of use of quotation marks and alledgedly

The correct answer would be a celebration that Labour are just as mendacious as the Tories. Not that the Telemailexpress would print that.

Incidentally, there was an interesting look at the Tories complete capitulation as the official opposition by our mate Phil. Certainly over council tax, they have decided the government is doing the right thing.

if the LibDems aren 't all over this, it would be a shame.

Vaguely reminded me of a 1984 graffito ...

America is a great place. They have Ronald Regan. Johnny Cash, Bob Hope and Stevie Wonder. Here in Britain we have Margaret Thatcher, no cash, no hope and no fucking wonder.

PickAChew · 16/11/2024 14:39

@SerendipityJane 🤣

I'm appreciative of the recursive nature of people making stuff up about someone making stuff up. (RR thread)

DuncinToffee · 16/11/2024 15:11

I am convinced posters are disappointed that the budget wasn't Truss II, or that the world didn't end as soon as Labour came into government Wink

Waiting for the headlines about how they have ruined Christmas. And probably killed kittens.
