The worst thing you’ve ever put in the washing machine…?

Make me feel better please!

DH away with work, and I have a day off whilst DD is in nursery so I’ve had a super productive day. Vacuumed/mopped the floors, cleaned the kitchen, done a few loads of laundry… just taken the last one out and I’ve managed to wash a (clean) disposable nappy. So now my nice clean floor is covered in the fake snow absorbent powder stuff, and the clothes are all having a second wash.

No great harm done (I hope!), but my goodness it’s irritating.

A cloth with loads of WD40 on. Well wasn't me, was DH. The clothes he put in with it all needed to be chucked in the end after trying all googled suggested fixes.

pikkumyy77 · 05/11/2024 19:00

My cat. It was actually the dryer and he had climbed in and when I turned it on I found out he was in there because I heard the thumping and yowling.

Partyrings123 · 05/11/2024 19:03

Also a clean disposable nappy whe. I washed all the newborn clothes just before my baby was born. Must have been a freebie nappy in a new mum pack.
All the new clothes were covered in nappy.

Phone - was smasharooed

BlueEyedLeucy · 05/11/2024 19:08

A horse numnah and a piddled on sweat rug (also equine), thinking as long as I got it out before my mum noticed all would be good…didn’t consider the amount of hair that would cover everything washed after!

HellofromJohnCraven · 05/11/2024 19:09

Dh managed to somehow put a black suede glove in the wash with all of baby dds pink baby clothes.
I cried!

Bluevelvetsofa · 05/11/2024 19:15

I’d previously washed two pillows separately and they’d been fine, so I decided to wash them together. The lumps and bumps have rendered them completely unusable. They’re in the bin.

I was having a washing marathon and washed some cushion covers. I’m still vacuuming the feathers stuck to the inside of them two weeks later and I had to trawl round the drum for soggy feathers.

Joint of beef. Ex BF put it in the washing machine “to keep it away from the cat” 🙈 I have no idea why it it didn’t stay in the fridge - something about bringing it up to room temperature before roasting it? 🤷‍♀️
He forgot it and added laundry It was nicely braised after a short wash cycle.

the80sweregreat · 05/11/2024 19:25

Pillows are so tricky to wash and they do come out lumpy even on a delicate wash.
I did try to see if I could have them dry cleaned , but you can't ( not where I took my one anyway !)
Must be my pillows as they say they can be washed on the instructions etc

This MUST be the most unusual one

DH sacrificed at least half a dozen fob watches to the washing machine during the time he was a healthcare assistant. Thankfully it was before Apple Watches were a thing and they were cheap ones. He'd stick his uniform in after a shift then I'd hear bang bang bang against the machine door.

Over the years we've washed multiple tins of Vaseline, a pack of chewing gum, paracetamol, plastic gloves and pens (all in DH's pockets), and also daisies which DD stuck in her polo pocket at school. Daisies stain BRIGHT yellow when washed, it turns out.

Justploddingonandon · 05/11/2024 20:48

Oh yes too many tissues to count here. I would say I get the Kleenex extra large which don't disintegrate for this reason, but they seem to have changed them recently so this is no longer true (I suspect they had micro plastics in to hold them together). If no tumble drier a really good shake and hanging on the line outside seems to be the best way to get rid of all the bits.
Also washed DS's timetable as missed it in one of the zillion pockets his blazer has. Fortunately he knew it by that point.

QueenOfWeeds · 05/11/2024 20:51

Some of these are horrifying! Definitely put me off getting a cat!

Our teacher in Y6 told us about her cat climbing into her oven when she had left the door open for it to cool, she didn’t realise and closed it. Realised quickly, cat was removed unharmed. But we all went home and told our parents that she put her cat in the oven…there was quite a lot of explaining going on at the school gate the next morning.

My phone

My DSs new mobile phone for Christmas on Boxing Day ...

I've also got form for washing notes and once dusters with white towels (I was sleep deprived).

The phone though ...

Me too. I complained about the other members of the household not emptying their pockets in my previous post, but conveniently forgot the number of times I washed my uniform with fob watches, badges, lip balm, pens etc. still in situ. My first ever fob watch, bought by my parents as a graduation present, survived several washes and still works 20 years on. My nursing school badge has lost most of its enamel from all the washes and I've yet to find someone that can restore it

DH accidentally washed my hearing aids on a 60 degree wash- to be fair to him I was unwell in hospital and the staff handled him a bag of washing in one of those ready to wash bags. Audiology were surprisingly OK about replacing them and didn't charge me.

Many years ago I washed £100 in £10 notes. Paper ones. By some miracle they survived and I dried them out afterwards on my sock airer. Paid them into the bank hoping no-one would ask questions about the somewhat clean notes that now smelled strongly of fairy non-bio!

My kids frequently leave money in their pockets. I call any money I find in the washing machine the Mum tax. They're still arguing amongst themselves as to who owned the 2x£5 notes that are now mine.

I still get funny looks from next door when l hang £10 and £20 notes next to my clothes on the washing line 😀.

Paper tissues and ball pens. Everything was ruined 😠

One of DP stories from army life, when they had pure wool jumpers but with cotton pads/patches to protect elbows and provide tabs for epaulettes etc. Jumper washed by very young recruit. Woolly jumper shrank to fit a 4 year old, but cotton pads/patches stayed same. Army officer not amused.

I remember having a jumper like that hanging up in stores, I think it was a regular occurrence.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/11/2024 16:10

A long slouchy jumper, hand knitted by me in pure wool that cost around £80.
First time I’d washed it, and It came out fine to fit a 2 year old.

I had only put it in to spin, but the machine was new, and unlike my old one, didn’t have a ‘just spin’ function, and I hadn’t realised that unless I faffed with it, it would rinse and spin.

And no instruction in the handbook as to how to spin only - I checked later. So much for bloody Bosch.

i always thought cats were at risk outside the home but what with ovens washers and driers it seems they are not safe in the home either!

the80sweregreat · 07/11/2024 18:09

Sorry to derail , but my bosche machine doesn't just do a spin either. It's a function I miss ( especially in the winter )
It's rinse and spin , not what I want :(

QueenOfWeeds · 08/11/2024 09:14

@the80sweregreat my Bosch machine doesn’t have it on the dial but if you set to “rinse and spin” then press “aqua plus” (or whatever button yours has to do an extra rinse) then you should find the time drops down to about 10 minutes and it does spin-only.

Test it on something unimportant first though!

My beautiful new cashmere jumper. Washed and tumble dried by my teenage daughter, very helpfully, last week.

it would now fit a small 1 year old. A small 1 year old that likes to wear cardboard.

Thankfully I had bought mine from the charity shop so not too expensive a mistake to make.

The worst thing I did was wash sick covered sheets without shaking them off first. Cleaning sick out of the washing machine door seal was grim.

Also washed a pull up.

Mum washed my paper prescription.
