Help. Can't cope with "toothache"

HydrangeaBush · 05/11/2024 00:15

I've got "toothache" that's been getting steadily worse. It woke me up last night and I took paracetamol and ibuprofen

Today it's got worse. I've stayed drugged up. At lunchtime I saw a dentist who said it's not a dental infection (to my surprise) and did an x ray of the area. However at that time the ibuprofen was working.

I can't take any more paracetamol as I'm probably slightly over what I shod take in 24 hours. I took ibuprofen an hour ago.

I'm in tears as the pain just won't stop.

What on earth can I do? What is it? NHS direct/111 when I go through it online just says to see a dentist... Which I have.

Dentist said it could be sinus pain - I bought a sinus spray but I have no congestion or cold symptoms.

I had metal work inside my face many years ago so maybe somethings wrong but it honestly feels like this implant is infected (that she x rayed) so it isn't but under my cheek hurts too.

I want to just pull my face off.

HydrangeaBush · 05/11/2024 00:21

I've rubbed bonjela on it. It's like nothings working.

Ugh I’ve got toothache and ear ache from it too. Only co-codamol touches it and I’ve finished a course of antibiotics. I feel your pain.

could you try a warm compress right now?

HydrangeaBush · 05/11/2024 00:28

I really should wait til 3am to take the next cocodaml as I've had 4 doses of paracetamol since 3am already.

But 1.30 would be 6 hours so I might do that. I just am very wary of too much paracetamol.

It hurts SO much. I am scared I'm going to wake the kids up crying.

The dentist didn't want to give me antibiotics as she said it wasn't infected. But the pains getting so much worse somethings infected somewhere isn't it??

I can't cope.

HydrangeaBush · 05/11/2024 00:31

Where do I get antibiotics? Ring the Dr? And tell them the dentist said it isn't an infection?

Honestly I can't remember pain so bad since my gall stones.

I just want it to stop.

I don't know what set this off. I have an implant that's very old so assumed it had got infected. It feels like cold air on it "hurts". And the pain is all around it. But why it suddenly came.

I don't know how to get help.

I just want it to stop.

OP posts:
OrangeCorduroy · 05/11/2024 00:34

Could it be trigeminal neuralgia? Did the dentist mention that?
I've only had it briefly but it was the most unbearable pain.

stayathomer · 05/11/2024 00:34

So some things that helped when pain medication wasn’t helping enough- weirdly eating dry bread gave a small bit of relief and also warmth, so warm radiator or hot water bottle- put hand on then press to outside of cheek(obviously not burning hot in case it burns you!) take care op x

HydrangeaBush · 05/11/2024 00:35

I left a message with the hospital ent secretary answerphone but wasn't sure who to contact as my constutant isn't there anymore.

I can ring again tomorrow but not sure they'll be bothered with someone with "toothache" I'm just so stuck.

Will the Dr give antibiotics. Google suggests not. Unless it's the sinus. I have no idea and it's scaring me I don't know.

And I want to sleep. I've got work tomorrow and I can't cope.

I am really scared.

I don't know how to get help and I don't know why it hurts and I just want it to stop.

I'm going to take the cocodaml early.

I’ve got a dry socket just now which is worse pain than the toothache I had before I got the tooth removed! I’ve been in agony for 10 days. As well as the dry socket my gums have ulcers and are all red and inflammed oh and my jaw is still sore. The dentist said it interested so that’s a plus point. I’ve been taking dihydrocodeine and naproxen which haven’t been touching the sides.

it’s horrible isn’t it?

HydrangeaBush · 05/11/2024 00:49

Gosh 10 days that's horrible. Are you signed off work? Do they say it will just stop?

I wish I knew why mine was hurting and how to get someone to tell me.

OP posts:
HydrangeaBush · 05/11/2024 00:50

I can't do this for 10 days 😬. I need stronger pain klers and I need it to stop.

simplythezest · 05/11/2024 00:51

I relate so much to this! I'm living off painkillers, dentists can't help me.

I take two co codamol and two nurofen two hours later, so:
6pm: two co codamol
8pm: two nurofen
10pm: two co codamol
Etc.

I'm awaiting an extraction, but the wait list in my area is very long.
My dentist told me to do that whilst they do further exams to try to stop the pain. Oragel doesn't work for me, nothing else does (granted, I'm not getting any sleep through the pain but it gets me through the day!)

Sending love, it's horrid and I know how you feel

simplythezest · 05/11/2024 00:54

I will also say my dr and dentist both refused antibiotics, dr won't help (in my area atleast) and I also tried 111. I'm the same as you, waiting for them to find the problem so they can help me but in tears daily from the pain!

BobbyBiscuits · 05/11/2024 00:56

Don't call it toothache as they'll keep referring you back to the dentist. Say sinus/facial pain. See the GP and say dentist ruled out anything to do with teeth. It could well be an infection and you simply need antibiotics. I hope you feel better soon x

Doingmybest12 · 05/11/2024 00:58

Have you got any cloves, place one where you feel the pain and it should numb it a bit.

Tittat50 · 05/11/2024 00:59

I'd personally call the doctor and say you want to try antibiotics first thing.

You can mention your sinuses too and talk about having a problem there to encourage the prescription. I know we aren't supposed to take for no reason but with this I think you should give it a try. Don't back down and you should get them. They don't always know for certain something is not brewing in there so push to get some.

I suffer from mind bending nerve pain in face and head. When nothing at all helps I get a hot water bottle and put it on my face. It helps even though I know that pain is frightening and hard to completely remove.

I don't know why but aspirin sometimes helps more than anti inflammatory meds such as ibuprofen. It is also an anti inflammatory so be careful if you just took ibuprofen.

Aspirin has blood thinning properties so not sure if that's part of it that helps in my case.

Does a warm water salt rinse help? Weirdly that helps nerve pain in my face/ mouth if it's round the teeth area.

MyCatsAreFuckwits · 05/11/2024 00:59

You need to see another dentist ASAP in the morning.
You need antibiotics. They will do no harm if it is not an infection.
Go online if need be, NHS 111. They call back prompt and you go where they send you.
Co-codamol/ibuprofen as often as is recommended until then.
I have been there and it is excruciating until the antibiotics kick in.
Not recommended but alcohol to try and sleep. X
