Why do we rush the year?

Just been in poundland. Christmas music playing.
After Christmas Easter eggs will be out.
Why do we rush the year and not just enjoy the period we are in now?

Kerching, kerching, kerching.

Lifeglowup · 04/11/2024 10:40

Captalism. They want you to spend more money. You can engage it or not.

Lovelysummerdays · 04/11/2024 10:44

Money. I find all the seasonal tat irritating at best. It’s a permanent rotation now just about. The year starts with sales of Christmas tat then Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Easter. Then on to summer tat/ bbq and Father’s Day. Back to school everything then Halloween / Christmas.

UnnecessaryOwl · 04/11/2024 10:48

‘We’ don’t. I hate it. I feel like I’m always falling forwards into the next expensive, stressful thing and none of it is fun anymore.

stanleypops66 · 04/11/2024 10:56

I heard on the radio that lower income families spread out Christmas shopping/ preparation longer to spread the costs, so there's obviously demand for it.

Needmorelego · 04/11/2024 11:02

It's nature though.
We plant crops in the spring to grow in the summer to harvest in autumn to feed us in winter.
Life is always about preparing and planning for the next thing.

loropianalover · 04/11/2024 11:05

I agree, it’s really annoying. I LOVE Christmas but I don’t want to start seeing decorations etc in September, before Halloween. The Christmas period is supposed to be something to look forward to, not drawn out for months.

Don’t mind seeing mini eggs early though!

Itstakingtoolong · 04/11/2024 11:06

I don’t see it as rushing I see it as prolonging the fun bits . Also people especially families are so busy now that it gives more opportunities to engage in seasonal activities if the events are started earlier

lollypopsforme · 04/11/2024 11:11

Its like we now have 6 mouths of xmas its not like it use to be fun and happy its now who can out do who.
I stopped doing xmass yeas ago never felt better.
No decs no cards gifts etc nothing i grab my passport instead my mother is the same.
Leave around xmas week come back in jan new year.
Easter halloween boring valentines day what a load of crap.

mongoliandoll · 04/11/2024 11:17

I wish there was a date whereby restaurants, Xmas 'experiences' etc were allowed to start taking bookings.

It's happening earlier and earlier and takes all the joy out of it. I don't have young children but if I did, I image I'd have missed booking any sort of special Father Christmas thing by now.

Nothatgingerpirate · 04/11/2024 11:24

Good question.
It's horrible.
I never engage in it, but it's hard.
I'm 45 and it's never been the same during my childhood (another country).
Also, despite the extreme convenience Internet brought, every aspect of life was better without it, at least for ordinary people.

JaneJeffer · 04/11/2024 11:26

The problem is that if you don't engage and then try to find chocolates or whatever near to Christmas they're all gone Angry

Octavia64 · 04/11/2024 11:29

We went shopping for chocolates on Oct 31st.

Plenty still available but very few Halloween decorations.

I have a daughter in law who is gluten free and I start picking up gluten free Christmas stuff for her as soon as it comes into the shops because stock is very very variable. If you waited until December I wouldn't have anything for her.

It all goes in a Christmas cupboard in my spare room,

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 04/11/2024 11:30

Money.

frozendaisy · 04/11/2024 11:44

Some people will only have oct and nov pay packets to get Christmas presents in.

And if we want any shops left on the high street they will be needing all the sales they can get.

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 04/11/2024 11:55

I agree, this is why the years seem to fly by, everything is rush rush rush. Hate it. Why can't we savour each celebration before rushing onto the next one.

DieDreiHexen · 04/11/2024 12:05

I agree that rushing the year seems so sad.
Just about making money and getting things 'done'. It puts a me off going into shops and supermarkets- I rarely bother now.

We were on the train home from a trip to London and a lady laden down with bags from Westfield reflected that she felt late this year as she likes to have her Christmas shopping done by the middle of October. It all sounded like such a chore.

I'm happy to stick to just buying a few lovely gifts in December, not overbuying treat food and using the same old decorations year in, year out.

FourChimneys · 04/11/2024 14:16

It is because we have been groomed to measure our self esteem and how we appear to others by how much tat we buy.

You see it on here all the time, people agonising about which colour baubles to have, what Christmas jumper to buy, whether spending £XXX per child is enough. It is just a way for the retailers to put pressure on people, notably women.

The idea of celebrating the supposed birth of one particular child by filling the shops with tat, made in sweatshops in a country with totally different beliefs, then sending them across the world, where they will soon be discarded for the next shiny object, is obscene.

We have an obesity crisis, yet the shop shelves are sagging under the weight of fat and sugar.

I do my very best to avoid it all.

Bah humbug.

Etincelle · 04/11/2024 14:20

I start eating the flavoured hot cross buns in January and have had enough of them by about February. I pretend it's spring from Jan 1st and start listening out for bird song.

nomorehocuspocus · 04/11/2024 14:22

I dunno - October seemed to last for an eternity this year for some reason. Must be the mild weather.

You are my person! Christmas is like groundhog day, the same stuff comes rolling out year after year.

Not interested in it.
