I need an excuse for leaving work early

In a bit of a situation. I have to do some training for my new employer. The issue is that I'm still working in my old job (I'm part time). I need 3 hours to go and do this training but because of the time they want me, I will only have to take an hour off. I'm not in poor health and because of the fact that last year I had a lot of time off I don't want to call in for the whole day. Ideally, I wouldn't have to lie but I can't think of any reason why I would have to leave ab hour early.

I'm wondering if anyone has a good excuse that I could use. I haven't lied in years and this isn't coming naturally to me. Can anyone help??

Dentist or similar that you booked before you started work there. If it's a new job it should be believable. Can't you say you'll make the hour up on another day?

Dental appointment
Optician (scratched eye checked)

But she needs to lie to her current job - not the new one (so the excuse of having booked it before taking the job doesn't work). Though offering to make up the hour could be helpful.

Migraine?

No I think she’s still in her old job

toothache / emergency dentist
childcare
washing machine leak needing emergency plumber

you feel really shivery and ill

or just say you have to leave early, sorry - give you are going anyway

I'm still in my old job and that's the one I need the hour off from.

Kids harvest festival performance (if you have children and they're primary school) ~ if not, a niece/nephew's performance?

Dentist procedure you had scheduled and they've now offered to move up due to a cancellation?

Family member in hospital and you need to make visiting hours?

Sidenote: MN is clearly a set of accomplished liars, some of these are excellent 😂

CharlieDickens · 01/11/2024 13:53

The washing machine needing a plumber could work.

Neighbour just called, you seem to have a flood/broken window/ etc

You need to act really surprised/ panicky

TeenLifeMum · 01/11/2024 13:54

Just a personal commitment should cover it.

SeaToSki · 01/11/2024 13:54

You have an important appointment

if they ask what, then say its personal and confidential but very important. Offer to make up the time on another day in lieu or be unpaid for the time.

they may then not ask any more, if they do then you have to decide if you want to lie or not

Lol. This is the best so far.

Have you young kids? You could say one is vomiting and needs collecting from minders or school.

Or say you have bad wisdom tooth pain and the dentist has squeezed you in on a cancellation.

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 01/11/2024 13:59

Just say you have an appointment. There shouldn't be any need to elaborate further, but if questioned you could just say "a medical one".

Its what I've done when I actually have an appointment- I certainly wouldn't be going into details over my cervical polyps or whatever!

purplecorkheart · 01/11/2024 14:04

I also agree with the neighbor thing. They have found your door slightly open and it appears things have been messed up. Our your house alarm keeps going off.

Crunchymum · 01/11/2024 14:05

God don't say you're kids have a vomiting bug... chances are you'll be needing thay excuse for real at some point over winter!!

I'd just go for an appointment (opticians) and offer to make the hour up next week if that will sweeten the deal.

She needs an excuse, not an ongoing drama 😂

PurebredRacingUnicorn · 01/11/2024 14:22

Why not tell the truth, since you are leaving anyway?

Attelina · 01/11/2024 14:27

If they don't know you're leaving and it's a male boss then mention severe period or gynaecological pain. Men get uncomfortable about that kind of thing and he'll wave you out without further ado.

If it's a woman then she may sympathise or may not!

Or the squits! No one will stop you leaving.

I wish I hadn't had that pie at lunchtime....!!!

coffeesaveslives · 01/11/2024 14:27

I would just say you have to be home to let the plumber in.

BobbyBiscuits · 01/11/2024 14:29

Just say you've a medical appointment. You don't need to say what for.
Or you could say something about caring for an elderly person in the family/taking them to appointment? If such a person actually exists.
They won't try and catch you out I'd imagine. Just give as much notice as possible. If you are really busy at work then offer to do a couple extra hours over the next few days to make it up.

VentingPillowStuffing · 01/11/2024 14:36

I would just say you have the runs, because when you genuinely do have the runs it's embarrassing and you don't want to talk about it in detail. And your employer is weird if they ask promoting questions!

cookiebee · 01/11/2024 14:46

You left your electric bra plugged in and worry it will catch fire, if your boss is male he won’t know that electric bras are not a thing and won’t want to question such mysterious female things 😂😂😂😂

But in all seriousness don’t got into details, you need the time for personal reasons and can you have it?

Or of course you left your nuclear powered knickers switched on!

I’d love a heated bra for winter!! 🤣

Maybe tell the truth? Really surprised at all the lies and excuses
