Endless toys

Sepoctnov · 01/11/2024 07:42

I have one DC but going by the amount of toys, my house looks like I have four and a sideline childminding business.

With Christmas coming up and relatives who love to buy toys, what do you all do about the endless toys? I have occasionally done a clear out but lots of things are played with regularly. Any practical tips on what to do? Any magic storage solutions?

Suggest membership to places or swimming lessons or whatever you like to do or some books to relatives for gift idea. Tell themmyou have too many toys and ask them to buy only one each. Controlling how much comes in is the essential bit here.

Sell things on or donate when they grow out of them. Box things up and put out of sight e.g. loft for a bit to see if they are missed. Ikea is good for storage. We had the Kallax cubes when they were little but now have bests units with doors to hide it all.

Yes I've done that and have even had to keep larger toys at DGPs where we have no space.

My current issue is even before Christmas I am struggling with the amount of toys now. I am minded to ask DC to fill up a bag or two this weekend to take to the charity shop.

Loft & toy rotation

Cull half of it - charity shop, give away. If weather is fine we often put things on a table at the end of the drive and say on Facebook ‘stuff for free on X Road’ and it goes no problem.

Ask for things that can be used up eg craft kits (vouchers/memberships nice but it’s nice to have stuff to unwrap IMO)

Get your kid to sell some toys for pocket money (put on Facebook parent group etc) - how old is child?

Under-sofa storage boxes if you can get under your sofa. Or under bed.

The classic Kallax solution that is in 90% of homes 😄

Yes we’ve just done a massive cull - well half, the stuff has been selected but it’s in the conservatory. Such an effort to actually get it out the house! But the rest of the house feels amazing and spacious now 😃 do it!

So I've agreed with DC that The Great Cull will happen this weekend.

I'll also try the front garden give-away, a great idea. I often see toys and household things left out around here and people do seem to take things straight away.

Yes we have numerous Kallax units. They're all full to the brim though😏
