Halloween ~ where to go?

Hey all,

I know this is highly controversial on MN 👀

We've been on the fence over Trick or Treating tonight as DS5 was invited to a party (an open, drop in one, no RSVPs!) however he no longer wants to go and wants to Trick or Treat instead.

We live on a busy main road which doesn't really 'do' Halloween. We put a pumpkin out last year and no one knocked at all! About 5 mins walk away is an estate that goes ALL OUT for it, almost every house is decorated. Tempted to walk over there but of course it's not technically our neighbourhood. Would the done thing be to bring a few bags of choc and surreptitiously gift them to a couple of the houses as a token of appreciation? Any better ideas than that? Feel a little guilty we're going to take a load of sweets/chocolate without contributing anything!

You go to the estate that goes all out.

No one will know, mind or care.

I will have 100s of kids at my door tonight and I will only know about 10 of them. I don't ask for proof of address before listening to their jokes and giving them a sweetie.

Go to the estate. We live on one like that. DCs are too old for it now but we still have decorations and sweets. I regard it as a small payment for the couple of hours of fun trick or treating my kids had each year.

Go to the estate. I have no issue with little kids coming from other areas. I have a huge issue with carloads of teenagers being dropped off and generally get my pumpkins out by around 630.

Trick or treating is not for post primary.

I live on an estate & I know all the kids on the estate. There will be loads of others tonight that come knocking on our estate that I’ve never seen before! Go to the estate!

I live on an estate that goes all out and it is annoying when 'outsiders' come purely because they only take. They won't be putting bowls out themselves.

So go, but take some sweets with you to replenish as you go.

YouveGotAFastCar · 31/10/2024 13:54

Yeah, I agree you can go, but replenish as you do.

We also live on a main road that doesn't do much... I've lived here for four years now and never had any trick-or-treaters. As a result, we don't go - for us, DS would do the party or whatever Halloween event was on offer, or we wouldn't do anything.

But I used to live in a very popular estate for trick or treaters and I never minded additional people coming unless they weren't giving anything back; because you'd often run out before regulars came, and that feels unfair... You're benefiting from the atmosphere the locals have created, and their generosity, so it makes sense to give something back.

Thanks all! Will go and take a few bags of chocs with us to refill :)
