Nice areas near Gatwick

We are planning a move to near Gatwick Airport and have no idea about locations. Can anyone help. Schools are not an issue, would like a market town or similar. A high street with decent shops and restaurants is on the list. Can anyone help with suggestions please?

Horsham - ticks all your boxes!

Epsom. The College Area side. We used to call Gatwick Epsom Airport! It's about 25 minutes in the car.

Cakeonthefloor · 30/10/2024 22:28

How near to you want to be?

eurochick · 30/10/2024 22:32

How close? Lewis, Horsham, Oxted, Reigate might work.

Reigate?

Doggymummar · 30/10/2024 22:33

East Grinstead, Forest Row

MissHalloween · 30/10/2024 22:34

Cuckfield, Haywards Heath, Horsham.

I would say 30 mins drive maximum. Thanks for everyone's answers.

You’d probably like Horsham, nice town which is a decent size. About a 20-30 minute drive to Gatwick but also has a direct train link.

Epsom is nice but definitely not a 25 minute drive, I used to commute it every day and was nearer to 45 minutes - 1 hour depending on traffic.

If you’re open to smaller towns or villages then Lewes, Haywards Heath, or Hassock. But they don’t really have the market town feel to them and their high street aren’t as plentiful.

woolflower · 30/10/2024 22:38

Actually Reigate is also a good suggestion.

MovingTooFast121 · 30/10/2024 22:39

Horsham, Reigate, Dorking?

What's your budget like ? Horsham is nice but really, really expensive.
how close do you want to be to the airport ? There are some decent towns which are within half an hour.
Lewes is 35 mins from the airport if there's no traffic. I work in Lewes but have to go to the airport for work quite regularly abd I'm grateful I start and finish outside rush hour.
a couple of colleagues live in burgess hill which is about 20 mins from the aiport. You could also look at haywards heath which is on the train line direct to Gatwick or East Grinstead. Forest Row is quite small, more like a large village than a market town.

I don’t think Horsham is too bad for prices.

AndThereSheGoes · 30/10/2024 22:42

Reigate though is now just a commuter dorm. Soulless in the week, rammed to the rafters Thursday night to Sunday ( my experience was pre Covid mind you).
Horsham is your best bet I'd say although Ardingly is nice.

BiggerBoat1 · 30/10/2024 22:43

Horsham would probably fit the bill or Lingfield if you want somewhere a bit smaller.

lavenderlou · 30/10/2024 22:44

Haywards Heath is a bit boring but is in a lovely area. Cuckfield and Lindfield are nice villages.

Depends I guess where you're comparing with I guess. I live on the east side of East Sussex so the West Sussex prices compare unfavourably with ours here. A colleague moved at the same time as me, she moved within the Horsham area and got much less for her money.
