I couldn't find a thread on today's budget. Anyone watching live?

Excellent budget so far. The hard of thinking are of course here and poised to oppose anything Reeves announces regardless of the actual effect it will have on their everyday lives.

You think it's ok to violate the dignity of the most vulnerable in society? Treated like criminals - direct access to bank accounts for the "crime" of being in need of support?

I am dubious about this too, but I think the context is being able to claw back money from large scale fraud. But we shall see,

Is it really only 6% of children in private schools? There seems to be loads of private schools where I live.

Varies by age and county. I think it’s up to around 20% for 6th form.

Spasisters · 30/10/2024 13:26

So not very good with all this but does this not sound quite good and a lot better than expected?
I think the biggest issue will be companies unable to afford their increases then causing job loss or lower hours for people? Could be completely wrong as a lot of this is over my head!

Barney16 · 30/10/2024 13:26

I'm very moved by a female chancellor, it's a wonderful thing. I'm not sure having a department for saving money is a good idea though It will cost a fortune which sort of defeats the object and it's funny, well it's ripe for being made fun of. I have listened to her so far and still have this vague idea that we are all screwed but can't quite put my finger on how.

2.3 Billion into schools and increased tax on second homes - these sound well overdue to me.

Agreed, I love the increased stamp duty on second homes, and an increased tax on private jet journeys!

Girasoli · 30/10/2024 13:27

Did anyone catch what was said about stamp duty?

Phineyj · 30/10/2024 13:27

Sounds like good news for Manchester.

His business employs over 50 people as he owns two vet practices. So people will lose their jobs - as it's that or increase fees.

Or decrease profits?

TheyAllFloatDownHere · 30/10/2024 13:27

Girasoli · 30/10/2024 13:27

Did anyone catch what was said about stamp duty?

"Reeves announces the government will increase the stamp duty land surcharge for second-homes, by 2% to 5% from tomorrow, Reeves says."

Spasisters · 30/10/2024 13:27

Girasoli · 30/10/2024 13:27

Did anyone catch what was said about stamp duty?

Sure she said raised by 2% to 5% starting tomorrow for 2nd homes.

sharpclawedkitten · 30/10/2024 13:27

I do think the VAT rise on private school fees should have been at the start of the academic year, though. Don't disagree with it in principle but the timing is odd.

shockeditellyou · 30/10/2024 13:28

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 30/10/2024 13:25

Vets are a business who need to provide salaries to their employees. If you want employees to be paid a good salary then you need to expect to pay higher cost for treatment.

Money doesn't grow on trees. Equipment is expensive. Good vets, receptionists and technicians are expensive.

And it’s insurance companies that are driving up the bills. This was literally all over the press recently.

TheyAllFloatDownHere · 30/10/2024 13:28

I got confused as I heard "maintain coal tits" just then. Seemed like a specific bird to help.

I gather she said coal pits.

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 30/10/2024 13:28

FarmGirl78 · 30/10/2024 13:27

Or decrease profits?

Why should profits suffer though?

MichaelandKirk · 30/10/2024 13:28

My DH has a pension. He has a life limiting illness and will not reach 75 years old. At present he has a large pension pot. As his wife its coming to me without tax being paid. It looks like I will be taxed at 40% even though I am his wife and leaving your estate to your wife/husband is free of inheirtance tax.

The key for us is this 75 years old policy.

Noisylass · 30/10/2024 13:28

PandoraSox · 30/10/2024 13:26

I am dubious about this too, but I think the context is being able to claw back money from large scale fraud. But we shall see,

I am disabled they never mentioned anything bad apart from as you say looking at bank accounts the other day I had to give them four months of bank statements to show I wasn’t committing fraud. Universal credit spot check so they do this any way I don’t mind them looking at my bank accounts in real time as I have nothing to hide

FastBeater · 30/10/2024 13:28

@FarmGirl78, ridic 😉

shockeditellyou · 30/10/2024 13:28

FarmGirl78 · 30/10/2024 13:27

Or decrease profits?

Did he decrease prices whenever the Tories cut NI a few years ago?

sharpclawedkitten · 30/10/2024 13:28

FarmGirl78 · 30/10/2024 13:27

Or decrease profits?

Nah can't decrease profits. All these SMEs have kids to keep in private schools (at increased fees from January).

Skybluecoat · 30/10/2024 13:28

Pretty impressive so far. According to BBC this budget will mean we avoid austerity but will be repaying the debt the Tories left far sooner.

PrincessofWells · 30/10/2024 13:28

Girasoli · 30/10/2024 13:27

Did anyone catch what was said about stamp duty?

Sdlt of 5% in total on 2nd homes also incl new purchases by landlords.

Phineyj · 30/10/2024 13:29

@Barney16 it's going to require a huge load of borrowing so it depends if anyone wants to buy our gilts.

The Economist says the customers for UK gilts are drying up.

So we'll see.

Skybluecoat · 30/10/2024 13:29
