Made up trick or treat bags...won't be in to give them out...what to do?

I made up about 60-70 trick or treat bags (they're small enough) for the neighbours kids when the start calling on Hallowe'en but I've just realised that I won't actually be in on the evening in order to give them out.

I was thinking of asking a neighbour if they wouldn't mind giving them out when they give out their own treats. I don't want to leave them outside the house as it is possible that instead of just taking one bag, someone might empty the bowl and leave nothing for anyone else to have.

What would you do?

See if the neighbour will give them out or leave them outside our property and hope that trick or treaters will only take one bag each?

Give them to the local food bank

TokyoSushi · 30/10/2024 10:32

If the neighbour is actively 'doing' trick or treat as well then I would ask them, otherwise I suppose you'll have to risk leaving them out.

Theunamedcat · 30/10/2024 10:34

I've left sweets out before people are mostly good about taking just one

If it's just regular sweets (mini bags of haribo, fun size chocolate bars etc) then as suggested give them to a food bank. They could use them at Christmas.
Or give to a local primary school - small sweets are usually prizes at Christmas fairs.

I wouldn’t do either.
Or anything Halloween related.

Moonshiners · 30/10/2024 10:41

Maybe ask a neighbour or see if there are any teens you know who would happy to be the giver outer?

Clearly the OP is happy to participate.

I'd give to the neighbour and leave a sign saying 'we have left treats at number 52'

TheHatingGame · 30/10/2024 10:49

Leave them outside. We always leave them at the end of our drive outside our property and everyone seems to be sensible.

I’d leave them outside.

I suppose I took the question
“What would you do?“
in the op too literally! 🤣

Actually I think @Seeline ’s idea to donate to food bank is a great suggestion.

Thanks for this - I already have the trick or treat bags prepared so I have done something Hallowe'en related already.

I'll give serious consideration though to not doing something Hallowe'en related next year.

I think what I might do is leave some bags of treats outside and hope for the best.

I was out a couple years ago and just left them outside and we could see on our Ring doorbell we had plenty people come & there was still some left when we got home so they didn’t all get taken in one go. I do know someone else locally put some out and put a post on the local FB page fuming because they’d seen on the doorbell someone had just come and took them all including the bowl they were in! So I suppose it depends on who comes😂

riverwitch · 30/10/2024 14:01

We're not doing Halloween anymore not when the trend has been declining for years and the last 10 years we haven't had more than three, four or five kids at the door the whole evening.
Last year it was two little ones with their mum at about 7:00 and that was it.
I would not leave your little packages of sweets out unattended.
If you're comfortable leaving it with your neighbor I'm sure she would give it out with hers or you could as suggested donate it to a food bank, and depending how much there is and what kind of sweets they would keep to add in with Christmas parcels.

TomatoSandwiches · 30/10/2024 14:04

Stick them to your door...

Thanks for the suggestion @TomatoSandwiches - I'll bear that in mind for next year maybe.

I ended up using cable ties to secure a reusable shopping bag to the fence. I don't know if some kids took more than one bag but there were none left when I took the shopping bag in so I'm happy that it seems to have worked.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, including yours @TomatoSandwiches - it gave me a great laugh!
