Abroad: Budget hotel in Crete. Cockroaches and no bedding.

UK: Parkdean on the Isle of Sheppey. Caravan was fine but everything else was dire. DH and I refer to it now as the Isle of Shitty.

I'm shocked that Camber sands only closed last year!! Honestly the owners should have been tried for crimes against holidays!!

It is a very unique place, in a bad way. Everywhere in Medway is as rough as a badgers arse but Sheppy is the worse

Pontins camber sands, honestly the worst, most disgusting place i have ever stayed. We had to stay one night, I laid spare sheets across the floors so my toddlers didn't touch them.

I wonder if it was the same place that I stayed at with my family, way back in 1973 when I was 10?! It was fine then,as much as I can recall. But I have read quite a lot of damning reports about it online over the last year or so.

Pontins at Southport was quite memorable- we live about an hour away, and when the kids were little we had no money at all, so we had gone on a sun holiday. The accommodation was a bit grotty , and it was hardly a holiday for us , but there was a good kids show , the older toddlers liked the park and the soft play and I think we had paid about 75£ for a long weekend.

after our trip , we had talked it over and decided that the kids loved it so much, the beach was nice ect that we went back the following year for a similar amount.

well, fucking hell. At the same time there was some big sports fight going on and Pontins had opened up on a £3 day ticket for anyone to come in and watch this fight They were broadcasting. The entire place was rammed with gypsy men and older kids mainly . I have never seen anything like it, doors are being kicked down, windows were being smashed machines in the arcade at the glass push through, fights broken out the place was full of police. we got back in the car and went home after an hour. Pontins never refunded us.

it made the local bbc news .

I still can’t believe some of the stuff I saw that afternoon 🫣

Any Britannia hotel, awful. One in Folkestone was a particular highlight. The aura was truly frightening

If it's the one down by the harbour, it's used to temporarily house sex offenders just released 🤮

I stayed there December 2022. It was like being in an escape room. Surreal.

I booked a caravan as we were visiting family and it was cheaper than a hotel. The caravan itself was OK, but we'd had an unexpected heatwave and it was like a furnace inside but we couldn't leave the windows open as it was on a corner and everyone coming onto the site had to drive past it. I was hot and bothered and had a bit of a strop and decided there was no way I was going to be able to sleep in the caravan and I wanted to go home, it was far too hot and I wanted my own bed. DH agreed (grudgingly) and we took the bags back to the car but I tripped, fell over and broke my foot in 3 places!

DH emailed them the next day to say what had happened and they replied saying they hoped we enjoyed our stay and that we'll be back soon! I've never stayed in a caravan since and don't intend to as my previous experiences weren't great!

Rivington Lodge off the M61 near Bolton. We usually stay at the Premier Inn but post Covid prices had gone a bit crackers and I wasn’t paying £100 for a night. Oh how I wish I had.

Stunk of weed. Active drug dealing in the corridors. I’ve never seen so many types of mould in the shower. We only needed to be there one night so we thought we’ll just tough it out. Would literally only be in the room 11pm til 8am. It’s next to a service station off the motorway and starting at about 2am there were tannoy announcements on the adjacent car park for lorry drivers set off times every 10 minutes. I’m a heavy sleeper but even I didn’t manage to get a wink. This was interspersed by drug addicts fighting. Hideous!

had some awful holidays. used to go to Adult weekends at Butlins that was before the hotel type accommodation the old chalets ok but could have been better. biggest problem was the food was dire and most people seemed to forego food and just had the drink instead. found it a bit scary as due to their condition! they seemed to have 24 hour fights.
it is a shame that Pontins which last I heard was owned by Britannia is now so awful. when I was a child the company was owned by Fred Pontin who used to call at the camps to check them probably unannounced. we had fab holidays there when i was a child really clean good food entertainments etc. no wonder so many now closed and used for works etc.
Haven comes very close caravans always poky and cold. one time we booked a nice looking chalet when we got there told we had to go to an old house over the road. i am sure it was actually staff accommodation and was dire. had to go over a dangerous road for the place which was hair raising. the place was awful stacks of broken cots and highchairs in the hallway which was a total fire hazard a fire alarm ringing all night the 'double' bed was so small my ex had that and i thought i would use the fold out sofa. that turned out so saggy and smelly it was awful and the bedding they gave us was so old the logos on it had practically faded off.
place was in middle of nowhere a good 20 mins drive to civilisation but we thought oh good a cafe to get a nice breakfast. no it opened at 7 in the evening for 2 hours! as you can imagine it was a fight to get a table.
just to top it all off upstairs was a woman who every night had loud orgasms just after midnight never sure whether to be envious or annoyed!

Another one here.
We got a week for ridiculously cheap in 2020.

I'd say it was perfect if you like listening to other people's music at a very loud volume from 8am to about 2am.

We also got woke about 4am by the security responding to a report of domestic violence somewhere near us (they weren't sure where so they went round knocking on doors)

The family (mum and 3 girls under 12yo) next to us all smoked continually.
It did mean our parenting went up in the eyes of the dc. The first night they returned from a night-time wander wanting to report at least two families to the police/social services after what they'd witnessed (one physical, one emotional).
Unfortunately there was nothing identifying so we had no way of doing this.

There was a bright light continuously flashing into our apartment where it had gone wrong, and the curtains were very thin. We reported it every night. We returned to the same area the next year and were amused to note that the light was still flashing.

We decided with the money we'd saved we would just go out all day and eat out, and spent minimum time in the chalet.
Actually I thought for the money we paid it was worth considering. The rest of my family said "never again".

@Aworldofmyown that site is in a league of its own -my H mysteriously left me and a 6 year old to it whilst he went back home to do some 'urgent' work!!
