It was one of our first trips abroad and my parents didn't have a lot of money, so hotel was booked based on the price. It was horrendeous. A hotel in the middle of Antalya, busy intersection with cars honking at all hours day and night. Long trek to anything resembling a beach. It was 40 degrees, hotel had no AC. There was one, tiniest ever pool with greenish brown water. We had breakfast included, I still remember it - 3 dry shrivelled slices of cucumber, 2 slices of sad tomato, one tiny piece of bread. Old creepy hotel owner was hitting on me constantly - I was a teenager, and a shy polite one, so was terrified.

Pontins camber sands, honestly the worst, most disgusting place i have ever stayed. We had to stay one night, I laid spare sheets across the floors so my toddlers didn't touch them.

Crikeyalmighty · 27/10/2024 20:47

@Aworldofmyown that was mine too- back in 2004- absolute dump

I'm a pretty positive "make the best of it" type of person but it was vile. My mum cried!

Butlins adult-only weekend was grim.

It was a hen do and I was very much the odd one out of the group.
Everyone there went regularly and loved it.

I was horrified at the grim accommodation, the adults throwing food in the canteen and the truly awful people!

I cried to my boyfriend on the phone the second day as I couldn’t get home as we’d come in a big group with only a few cars.

Foley Arms, Great Malvern.

It was our wedding night and we'd driven for 3 hours after the reception to get there, only to find they'd given our room away to a bride and groom who'd had their reception there. We had to drive off into the foggy September night to find some godforsaken place to stay because they'd cocked up. DH had rung them 3 times ahead of our arrival to confirm too. Bastards.

That was 40 years ago and I still bear a grudge.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 27/10/2024 20:55

Pontins prestatyn. Bloody awful. Beer in the carpets and the pull out bed was so old the elastic had gone and you were nearly resting on the floor. Freezing swimming pool with not a slide or a diving board in sight. Butlins is a delight. Never tried the adult only events though.

emsyj37 · 27/10/2024 20:59

Hoseasons Sherwood - absolute fucking disgraceful standard of accommodation, and not even cheap. They were starting to renovate the cabins but we got an old one and it was truly awful. The kids beds were made of orange crates. There was no hot water and no shower in the bathroom.
Also an awful place called Bessie's Village in Kefalonia where we were forced to spend the night when our flight home was cancelled - holes I the sheets, no light in the bathroom the towels stank, rude receptionist, could not use the shower without flooding the whole room as there was no curtain or cubicle. I huddled under one of our own beach towels and counted the minutes til our airport pick up.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 27/10/2024 21:00

The Adelphi Liverpool in the 90s. It was funny in a WTF have we done sort of way. Thumping music from a club in the basement and a drunk man trying the door at 3 am.

Redcar in caravan, must have been somewhere around 6-8 years old. Told my parents I felt ill. They insisted I was 'spoiling it for everyone' as they forced me to walk around the place for hours. Didn't think hmm wait a minute when I rejected all food, including ice cream saying I felt to ill (accused of being difficult).

Then the projectile vomiting started, then the other end! They'd been insisting on me 'taking a lick of the ice cream' or 'trying a bite' all day threatening punishment so every single one of them caught it. Deffo not enough bathrooms for all sufferers at once. On the night before departure. Think my family could have taken shares in medications used to stop D&V to get them home.

Whether or not I actually feel ill hasn't been questioned since.

mindutopia · 27/10/2024 21:08

Heathrow Travelodge. I shared a lift up to my floor with what I can only describe as an 18 year old sex worker (dressed in like thigh high stilettos, she stood out) and her 60 year old client. Grim. I’ve never stayed in a Travelodge again. Actually, this one was maybe 2nd to my actual worst travelodge experience. Stayed at the one on Drury Lane and there was some club across the street that literally shook the whole building until about 7am. I’ve never experienced anything like it. Did not sleep a wink.

We stayed in a hotel in Weston-Supermare where the cook had just finished a course at the college over the road. Meals had to be chosen in advance and if anyone was late he would not cook for them. The first meal he ran out out of food so most of us ended up at a nearby fish and chip cafe that was splendid. It was run on a budget and breakfast was a cheap sausage and bacon. Then he brought a tick list round for the evening. My bed fell apart and was not fixed all week. It came to the last evening and from the bus stop we had to run as we realised it was nearly six pm. We were met by buckets all over the place and were told the meal was delayed as someone had let a bath overrun. The manager was a woman who had a drink problem. Earlier in the week my DP told her he had been a chef and if she gave us a fee week he would sort out a much better breakfast and a properly cooked evening meal not just things cooked from the freezer. All the people pleaded with her and the comment was I'm not made of money so No Thanks. The manager also smoked non stop and the smoke wafted into the bedrooms. When we commented she said Well too bad eh.! We saw online that the place was closing and the paper wanted comments. I told them about our stay and was contacted by them to say they had laughed loudly at my account of the week. All through breakfast a compilation CD was played but it was faulty and it was the same CD each morning. It would suddenly stop and then suddenly go to the next track .We laughed a lot because the alternative would have been to cry all week. Endless things went wrong. I thought it was strange because we got a taxi and the driver asked where we were going and went silent. The usual response from drivers is they tell the people it is a nice place but soon realised why he did not say anything .The portions were so small so we would go somewhere for a great lunch so that it didn't matter. He did fish and chips once and the fish was not cooked but the chips were so well done they were burnt. As a fellow diner said to us that takes some skill to be such a bad cook. The Cd was a 60's one and now when we hear those tracks we remember where that CD suddenly stopped. All week my bed ended up on a slope by the morning.

San Diego, California. Arrived after 24 hours travelling with two tired and fractious teenagers. Hotel manager pointed us at our room and we entered to find someone else's stuff there, filthy room and hair in the bed. Went back to complain and she said "Go and find something to eat and I'll get it sorted for when you get back." We weren't happy and after finding dinner we looked for somewhere else! Found another hotel (luckily as 14 year old was threatening to sleep on the streets rather than go back to the original hotel) only to find that she hadn't even started getting the room ready! After saying we were leaving we said we were definitely not paying for the reservation... Glad to say she didn't try to charge us and we ended up having a great holiday.

GoldMoon · 27/10/2024 21:17

Can't remember the city except it was a northern one and we'd driven up to attend a show .
It was a hotel / b & b type place .
Arrived late afternoon and couldn't get in as the door was locked , took ages to get someone to open the door .
Decor very old fashioned and not very clean , room tiny , same shower .
I wrapped the pillows in clothing to lay our heads on .
Breakfast was terrible ( didn't eat it ) cups of tea / coffee barely warm .
Staff didn't seem to know anything , they didn't know the area, and couldn't give directions to anywhere , couldn't understand you very well .

Thismummyrunstheshow · 27/10/2024 21:17

Parkdean Camber Sands... I can't even describe the goings on, it was awful.

sprigatito · 27/10/2024 21:23

We got a cheap voucher for a stay at Pontins Brean Sands when the kids were little. Holy fuck I have never seen anything like it. The accommodation was like a Russian penal colony. The family next door spent EVERY night screaming at each other and throwing shit around. The bloke spent all day, every day sitting in the doorway wearing a dirty wifebeater vest and underpants, drinking bottle after bottle of shit cider and belching. The "entertainment" was a racist comedian, a sandpit with dog shit in it and a swimming pool that was always closed. There was a "pub" that scared the shit out of us. Our "chalet" had no fridge, a piss-stained sofabed that you had to move the furniture to open and two WW2 camp beds for the kids. We went to the lobby to complain and got our shoes soaked because the toilets had flooded everywhere. The kids thought it was hilarious, they still talk about it now.

Me too. What a scary shithole. There was parents swearing around their tiddlers. One woman was having a domestic with her husband for about a hour after midnight. I heard a woman going past our pigsty shouting "if you don't shut her the Fuck up I will!" Then there was about 15 people and their TINY kids effing, jeffing, screaming and shouting. Police came. I felt like I was in a riot. Utterly dire. Nasty dirty place. The people was just astounding. Never seen anything like it and I grew up in Medway so that's saying something. Parents walking down Gillingham high street at 11am pushing a pram with a can of Stella on the go seem classy in comparison. We left within 24 hours of arrival

One of my mates is very Conservative Christian nurse and she lives it their. My mind boggles.

Anicecumberlandsausage · 27/10/2024 21:24

It was a hotel in Newquay. We stayed over to break a journey from London to St Ives. It was one of those hotels on the Evan Evans short break map. The toilet gurgled all night. I think the plumbing was last refurbished before the world war. The decor was 1970s. The food was bloody awful. We were the youngest guests by 40 years. Plus point: it wasn't a long walk to the zoo.

Another place actually was a glamping site on the edge of North London. Basic doesn't cover it. Not glamorous nor luxury, tbh. The bed was hard. They let the grass grow for environmental reasons but it also rained a lot so all our clothes were drenched through by the second night. No heating. The showers didn't work. I was so glad to get on the Thameslink to go home. I'd been glamping before and had a great time but this was rubbish.

GrandesRandonnees · 27/10/2024 21:25

Fuckwit ex was a cheapskate and didn’t want to pay €50 for a Marrakech riad “because it has no character”. So we ended up in a place with dirty, stained sheets and a tap and bucket for washing for €12. All the reviews said there were bedbugs although thankfully we didn’t get bitten.

I’ve stayed in some fairly down at heel places over many years of travelling but this was next level. The worst thing was that it took me another two years to dump the prick.

RabbitsRock · 27/10/2024 21:29

Been mostly very lucky with holiday accommodation but when I went inter - railing with a friend in my late teens, we stayed in the student halls of a Paris University & our room was overrun with cockroaches! We had to put down damp towels.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 27/10/2024 21:30

Pontins

Filthy
Full of drunks
Windows don't lock with toddlers able to access them
Broken everything

Stayed 1 hour then demanded a refund.

Debtfreeme · 27/10/2024 21:31

Any Britannia hotel, awful. One in Folkestone was a particular highlight. The aura was truly frightening

JustAnonymous · 27/10/2024 21:31

Pontins Southport. It looks like a prison camp and was just grim! I've stayed at the Brean Sands one and must've got lucky as our chalet was reasonably clean and adequate, and witnessed no particularly bad behaviour from guests, although we were there during term time, so it wasn't especially busy.

Pedallleur · 27/10/2024 21:33

Days Inn Denver Airport. Had been staying at The Brown a 5* in Denver. Was flying to Wyoming but had plane trouble that was fixed but then our destination was closed due to a plane crash!!! So flight cancelled until the next day. Got a room at Days Inn. Grim. Stained sheets and not very clean. Then some rubbish food at the restaurant. Luckily everything back to normal the next day. There was the hotel in New England that as I drove up to the Fire Brigade was just finishing up damping the flames down. It had caught fire the night before. Owners arranged some nearby accommodation so full marks there.
The Capital in Knightsbridge. Room was next to the lift motor. Whiiirrr, CLUNK! PSSSSH! PSSSSH! CLICK! Whiiirrr. The sound of the lift moving up/down. Brakes applied, door opens, closes, brakes off, lift moving up/down. All night.
One I can't remember in London and someone was opening their bedside drawer every few mins seemingly all night. No idea what they were putting in or taking out but it seemed like every 5 mins all night.
