What was your worst EVER hotel or caravan stay? (Don’t need to name the place) what happened? Did you stay or go home? Just had my first really bad stay so interested in hearing about others

OP posts:

@Aworldofmyown yep me too- had a 6 year old with me plus DH- DH made his excuses about having to go into work on urgent stuff and left me to it after 2 days - not only was the place grim as hell but it was full of totally feral families letting kids run wild, throwing glass about , whilst parents got totally rat arsed throughout the day

Saschka · 27/10/2024 21:35

My absolute worst was staying by myself as a 20 year old in a hotel in Tanzania which was recommended in Lonely Planet but turned out to actually be a brothel. Men trying the door all night. I had to stay because I’d paid, I didn’t actually want to risk opening my door, and it was the only hotel in the town, but I didn’t sleep a wink, and crept out at about 6am past a loads of sleeping drunks in reception.

And to top it off, there were bedbugs.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 27/10/2024 21:35

Looks like pontins has come out top again.

reversetheick · 27/10/2024 21:39

Norbreck Castle, Blackpool. I think it's a Britannia so I should have known! We just needed. Cheap stop over but really wish we'd paid more and gone literally anywhere else! This was in the days before trip advisor etc. so I hadn't properly checked it out. Just hideous, the worst place ever. Everything stank of cigarettes and I don't think it had been updated or cleaned since the 70s.

whiteroseredrose · 27/10/2024 21:40

Weekend in Haven in North Wales 15 or so years ago. Lovely staff but grim and cold caravan.

Saturday late night there was music coming from one of the caravans nearby. Followed by the sound of a drunk man beating up his wife. Fortunately DC were exhausted from lots of swimming and trampolining so they slept through it. It was awful.

Loafbeginsat60 · 27/10/2024 21:40

Glasgow city "luxury" apartments. Blood on the walls, the bedding, stunk of cigarettes, broken sharp tiles, everything was filthy.

I wrapped towels round the pillows for our toddler to sleep on and used a car blanket for his covers.

Checked out as soon as we could - the office was like a drug dealers den and we were too frightened to complain!

Back in the day we had no money spare to move to another hotel - wouldn't put up with that kind of crap nowadays!

SiobhanSharpe · 27/10/2024 21:45

DH and I went 'camping' many many years ago, we had an old banger of a car but no tent or camping equipment at all. But we found a field somewhere in deepest Devon where the farmer said we could park for the night. We must have bought sandwiches to eat as it was late and in the middle of nowhere -- or so we thought.
We bedded down in the car but were suddenly woken up at 5am by the sound of jet engines horrifically close by, clearly followed by the airline crew's pre-take off announcement. (headed to Tenerife, AFAICR.)

The field was literally at the end of the runway at Exeter airport.
I think the plane had taxied to the end of the runway. We heard the announcement as clear as day, then it turned, revved up the engine to screaming point and headed off back down the runway to take off.
I don't think either of us got back to sleep.

Any Britannia hotel, awful. One in Folkestone was a particular highlight. The aura was truly frightening

If it's the one down by the harbour, it's used to temporarily house sex offenders just released 🤮

SpiritAdder · 27/10/2024 21:47

I was once living in a caravan in the Jornada del Muerto desert outside Socorro and it wasn’t for the faint of heart.

Caffeineismydrug35 · 27/10/2024 21:48

Mine was a caravan park in Camber Sands too. Horrible place. The food was awful, people arguing at full volume through the night, unruly kids trashing things. We lasted one night and got the hell out.

adultingforever · 27/10/2024 21:49

As young parents, my husband and I left our son with his grandmother and went to a hotel in a nearby town. Just our luck that the room next to us had twins a bit younger than our son who took turns crying almost all night!!

HateMyNewJobSoMuch · 27/10/2024 21:51

The New Discovery “B&B” in Blackpool.

Walked into the family room with my husband and boys, took one quick look around and walked straight back out again.

Ranted to the manager:

  • room was filthy
  • bedding was filthy - double bed contained used tissues and a dummy
  • furniture was dangerous (very shoddy quality with nails sticking out)
  • cups were filthy
  • damp across the ceiling and walls
  • wallpaper peeling off
  • fluffy black mould all over the shower area
  • disgusting toilet

Needless to say I got our money back workout any argument from the manager who eas very sheepish.

DH said I was scary! However I was genuinely applauded that they charged £65 a night - I’ve seen better conditions on the street in makeshift homeless shelters.

Oh and they don’t serve breakfast despite being a B&B. Not that I’d dare risk it if they did!

They have some very positive reviews on trip advisor mixed in with genuine terrible ones. I’m convinced the manager writes all the goid ones. There is no way anyone with eyes and a sense of smell could seriously recommend the hellhole.

Pumpkincozynights · 27/10/2024 21:52

I’ll second Pontins at Southport.
Grim, grim, grim.
Abroad has to be the apartment in Lille booked through booking.com.
Moldy food in the fridge, wet washing left in the washing machine. The place had not been cleaned. The bed had not been changed. No handrail on the stairs, no lights in the bedroom. To top it all you couldn’t even stand up in the bedroom! It was only about 4 foot high from floor to ceiling!

Pontins camber sands, honestly the worst, most disgusting place i have ever stayed. We had to stay one night, I laid spare sheets across the floors so my toddlers didn't touch them.

Park dean, camber sands isn't any better

LorettyTen · 27/10/2024 21:54

A hotel in Nashville, Tennessee, that was a Holiday Inn when we booked through a brochure and had been bought by a family in the time between us booking and getting there. Non smoking room stank of cigarettes. Great big tidemark on the bath. Smelly nylon bedspreads looked like they'd never been washed. I went down to reception to complain and an ancient old grandad was sent to our room with a spray and a filthy cloth to clean the bath. We asked for a different room, it was a bit better, beds were clean, we were tired, so we stayed. In the morning I noticed that behind the lamp was a big lump of brown stuff on the wall- it looked like earwax. DS promptly lost his breakfast. As for breakfast- a bun fight overseen by a thuggish-looking teenager with a sliced loaf still in the bag and a box of stale doughnuts.
We cancelled the second night and went elsewhere.
I complained to the company I booked it through, the person I spoke to was apologetic, she refunded us and said lots of people had complained.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 27/10/2024 22:06

Parkdean near Weston-super-Mare. It was dirty, pubic hair in the sink etc.

Weston-super-Mare was also dire. Bride walking down the street barefoot to the chippy straggling behind the groom.

Fleasies · 27/10/2024 22:10

The Grand Hotel in Scarborough. Our experience wasn’t as bad as some who have stayed there, and definitely not as bad as some of the experiences PP have had, but it was as bad as I ever want to get.

Literally thought of this place just before I read your comment.
We stayed here about 10 years ago with 2 of our kids.
Was absolutely disgusting, the chalet we had, had not been cleaned, crab sticks left in the fridge, which stank as soon as we opened the fridge 🤢🤮, fag butt's down the toilet and only a bath which had most definitely not been cleaned.
I took the kids swimming so they could shower there after 😆
Tried to complain but staff not very helpful.
Was vile I felt so grubby just being in the room only stayed 2 nights and couldn't wait to get home.

Bucketsof · 27/10/2024 22:21

Booked to stay in huge 1970s camper b&b. In remote USA location. very excited for giant camper RV,
On arrival, host told us camper not available and we had to stay in the basement of her house, me, parter & two kids 8&10. Along with German oddball dad & son. Rooms, not adjoining smelled of bleach and host told us she just removed the mildew. Everything was damp and seemed not clean. Bleach overwhelming.
Host was so over the top & annoying.
Made her “famous” something breakfast which was disgusting.

I really wanted to fully effing scream at her for being a lying bitch about the cool 1970s camper and got her house being so utterly disgusting. She already had our money & we were miles from a hotel.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 27/10/2024 22:35

A reasonably decent hotel in Leeds, not too far from the station. Can’t remember the name of it for the life of me. It was a contest between the Police helicopter and someone out the back of a bar/club throwing bottles into a bin as to who could make the most noise. Not a restful night.

Pontins in Brixham was equally grim! Absolutely appalling! 🤢

Catagena - a beautiful city in Colombia. I was backpacking around S. America, staying in hostels and cheap hotels, which were mostly very nice. I checked into this cheap hotel and saw a rat in my room. I packed my bag and left the city on an overnight bus immediately.

We got a cheap voucher for a stay at Pontins Brean Sands when the kids were little. Holy fuck I have never seen anything like it. The accommodation was like a Russian penal colony. The family next door spent EVERY night screaming at each other and throwing shit around. The bloke spent all day, every day sitting in the doorway wearing a dirty wifebeater vest and underpants, drinking bottle after bottle of shit cider and belching. The "entertainment" was a racist comedian, a sandpit with dog shit in it and a swimming pool that was always closed. There was a "pub" that scared the shit out of us. Our "chalet" had no fridge, a piss-stained sofabed that you had to move the furniture to open and two WW2 camp beds for the kids. We went to the lobby to complain and got our shoes soaked because the toilets had flooded everywhere. The kids thought it was hilarious, they still talk about it now.

XP took the DC there one February half term several years ago, and they still speak about it in tones of awe 😆

Invisimamma · 27/10/2024 22:47

Park dean cresswell towers, absolutely filthy. Place was a health hazard.

Samirasmumma · 27/10/2024 22:55

I stayed in Marmaris with a friend when we were 19. Tiny room with a shower in the corner. The whole room was slanted towards the drain, no shower curtain. One small bed. We had to pile everything on the bed when we showered as the whole room would flood. Now I think about it, it seems likely it’s was a shower room with a bed in it. Horrendous. I was small and blonde, my friend was dark, I spent the week scared witless and the men used to barter my friend for me; she was offered several bags of gold and camels etc (no joke).
