Dogs are everywhere?!

I took DS to a university open day today. Two separate families had brought their dog with them! Is this someone I've missed?! Why is this necessary?!

Seeing as how there’s a lot of dog V children comments on here I’ve just got to add I’ve had at least forty young kids come to the door tonight trick or treating, most aged between four and eight (ish) and all bar one loved seeing the dog answer the door in a Halloween dress up. They all fussed her and several chatted to her, and our dog thought they’d all come just to see her so she was over the moon with the biggest doggy smile on show, all the kids were super polite, the dog was very well behaved, and gentle and calm with the littlest ones, mums and dads all polite too. And the little boy who was nervous? Our dog was sent to sit in the kitchen doorway and did so obediently, and the little lad seemed happy and said thank you.

Well behaved and sociable all around and it’s been a lovely evening.

we always get lots of sweets in, and since the first time a family showed up with their dog, we make sure there are dog treats to.
you come to my house, you're getting treats. regardless of age, costume or species, you're out enjoying it, you get treats.

HelloYouGuys · 01/11/2024 04:58

Dogs in cafes... or anywhere they serve food is a no no.
Even if the said dog is well behaved, when they do that "shake" thing, you get a cloud of dog hair rising up in the air and then floating down on peoples food.. ugh!

Dogs near clothing, I don't want to buy an outfit with dog hair in it where it has brushed past.
Neither do I want dog snot on my clothing.

I honestly believe that (some) dog owners give their animal(s) too many "rights".

I can like dogs, but I can also hate the expectation that I'm gonna love the dog as much as the owner does.

Just messaged a friend I haven’t seen for a while suggesting meeting for brunch - but she will only meet in a ‘dog friendly’ café er, no thanks…. Invitation was to her, not the dog!

Such nice stories! We had a trick-or-treat free evening, sadly.

We had pumpkins out and had loads of sweets ready. I’d put Fang, our XL Bully, on a long chain in the front garden to say hello to kids knocking for sweets. But no kids seemed to want to come in 😢. They’re obviously dog haters.

Fang is remarkable. He can actually cure sick children. When I say on Facebook that I’ll be taking him to the local children’s ward for pet therapy, the ward’s always empty when we get there! It’s miraculous! Which means the doctors and nurses take the time off too and we never see them either! The only staff we see are security guards who come along and ask us to leave. Yet more dog haters. Shame.

🤣🤣 Brilliant!

I've always loved dogs but am sick to death of them being underfoot everywhere, especially in food places and shops. There is no valid reason for them to be there.

Too many owners are too lazy to properly train their dogs and just treat them like babies instead. Or they get a dog in lieu of them actually having a personality of their own.

YeOldeGreyhound · 01/11/2024 15:19

Some Costa branches now allow dogs, and I saw my first there today. A well behaved 11 month old puppy. Was happy sitting under his's owner's chair with his ball. I had to say hello! He was lovely, and made my day Smile

TitaniasAss · 01/11/2024 15:29

When we were at university open days last year there were dogs bloody everywhere. I love dogs, we have three ourselves but there's no need to take them everywhere and expect everyone else to be fine with it. One woman even tried to take hers into one of the lectures (she was denied entry). We made sure that DS was at home on all the open days we went to, so they weren't on their own all day.

I have a friend who has never left her dog, so now has the most nervous dog with separation anxiety. While I wouldn't leave ours for more than a couple of hours, you should be able to go shopping without taking someone else with you to stand outside with the dog.

HighHeelsOnCobblestones · 01/11/2024 15:36

Costa were the only dog free coffee shops in my town. All six Costa stores in the town now allow them, there’s no longer any coffee shop in the town which is safe for those who can’t be around them.

The dog I saw in Costa today was under his owner's chair. How would he have bothered you? Chances are, you would not have even seen him.

Oh, and they have wet paws that humans don't have too.

And so we’re back to the whole point of the thread. Thank you! The people saying ‘just go somewhere else’ are slightly missing the point aren’t they, and in some cases I think deliberately and disingenuously hijacking the thread.

Also cue the not understanding why everyone doesn't feel tje same as you type of posts. 🫣

On this topic, no, I don't understand why people 'hate' dogs (or, as I say, some dogs).
But generally speaking, yes, of course I understand that 'everyone doesn't feel tje same' as me. And more often than not I understand why.
Another uninformed, miserable post. Predictable and boring.

It's not hatred of dogs. It's not their fault and they can be nice in the right setting. Its frustration with irresponsible and daft owners who don't train them and treat them properly like the animals they are, and think it's appropriate to take them everywhere with no thought for anyone else.

I completely understand that - BUT there is a clear irrational dog hatred on this thread that is way beyond frustration with the owners and 'badly trained' dogs.

RichardOsmansFreakishlyBigHand · 01/11/2024 21:28

They're fucking dogs, they shouldnt be in shops or eateries.

Mine isn't either. But my dogs 13 and he's always come the pub with us and independent cafes on the odd occasion. So it's not a new thing

I’m sorry but that’s a bit dense. If someone is allergic, for example, it’s not very helpful to say that one dog you saw was under a chair.

It was one dog under a chair. Chances are, you would not even have noticed it.

I only noticed it because I sat nearby.

The irrationality is coming from those who say things like ‘children are worse’ and ‘our dog is lovely’. Irrelevant.

I genuinely haven’t seen much dog-hate. In fact, as I’ve pointed out before on similar threads, many of those agreeing with the OP clearly do like dogs.

I might not have noticed it. But the poster you were responding to said they can’t go to Costa anymore because they let dogs in. Reading between the lines it sounds like an allergy or severe phobia. Not just a case of getting annoyed by dogs.

So, it’s a poor answer to say that one dog you saw was under a chair. A bit like saying to someone with a peanut allergy ‘don’t worry, the peanuts I saw today were in a sealed packet’. That pp clearly has an issue which has nothing to do with you seeing one dog under a chair. What about all the others.

You really need to revisit the fornal definition of family. Dogs are animals. Pets. Saying you can't dictate what people refer to as family is like saying you can't dictate to people that the earth is round. Sure, there are people that believe otherwise, but they are objectively wrong and they're usually a bit daft. Never confuse feelings with facts.

there is a growing redefinition of family which include multi species - companion animals, these are family to many people, it is really up to them who they include. Many pets for example are emotionally supportive to people who are bereaved, or who don't have a great home life, companion animals are necessary and of great benefit
