Is it worth moving job for an extra £15k if I have to commute?

Current job 4 miles from home, 9-5, Monday to Friday. Small team, no progression and awful boss who has his favourites and refuses to grow with the business. Long term team members are spoilt.. honestly you wouldn’t believe it. The office politics are what’s making me look elsewhere.

Thinking of applying for a job with a £15k increase but financially not sure it’s work it. I’d have to travel into the city which is about 42 miles each way, no trains available. Also Monday to Friday but 1 day WFH. Would mean earlier start and home much later, not as much time for the kids who would also now have to make their own way to and from school.

Financially it’s about as high as I can go in my field as there’s not much around at the min but also I feel that as I approach 42 now’s the time to challenge myself.

Any advice much appreciated

I think it’s too far

42 miles is nothing. In your circumstances I wouldn’t (and haven’t) thought twice.

if you had a job you loved, great colleagues, profession opportunities and your kids still needed collected then it might be more of a thought but the only thing stopping you here will be yourself.

How much would it cost you to drive 42 miles 8 times per week?

What about parking?

I'd consider it from a career perspective, but only if the net financial gain outweighs the extra commuting time. I wouldn't consider it if I'm losing family time and little to no financial gain.

If you could negotiate a 3 day a week work from home it would be worth it. As it is that 15,000 would cost you considerable amount of time.

I think time is very precious and would count that travel as work time. You would be ‘working’ an extra, what-1-2 hours a day?! 5-10 extra a week, plus travel costs. Is that worth £15k?
